Geez, can't believe New Orleans is gonna get hit AGAIN! And now they have tornado warnings? Ack!

Meanwhile, I follow an oil site and this section- http://www.rigzone.com/news/hurricanes/gustav.asp - gives an interesting overview of how Gustav will affect the oil industry (not good). I had no idea that many oil platforms existed in one area! If only the gas in my car tank could last as I'm sure it'll shoot up tremendously this week.

I heard on the news that remnants of Hannah will probably reach where I live by the upcoming weekend (as long as it doesn't knock out power, or if does, hopefully after SGA airs as I don't count on SciFi being smart enough to put this season into repeats).

Hope that everybody down south is able to get out of the hurricane's path in time.

It's crazy, isn't it? You have to wonder why people want to live there. I always think that about people who live in areas of Victoria that get hit by bushfires every year, but they just rebuild and stay.

Well, you can't just pick up and keep moving. Where in the world can you go where you're not hit by something that can turn into a disaster? I live on a 21 mile wide island, and I dred hurricane season every year and I watch the storms down south with a weary eye!

I am not surprised but I am glad that the majority of people have evacuated. I saw some of them come into my city today and will be at one of the shelters tomorrow helping settle in those coming in by the busload.

New Orleans is a nice city, it has its problems and I preferred it pre-Katrina because culturally it was great but post-Katrina its so much different culturally as well as physically. I loved living there but had to leave that soup bowl because it was so dangerous.

But as I said, I am glad they are evacuating.

At least it looks as though people are leaving this time. Makes you wonder where they all go, though. Every time a hurricane gets near or hits in the South I think the North with its 6 to 7 months of snow really isn't all that bad.

As for getting gas...that's on the to-do list first thing tomorrow morning.

We're getting bunch, including Dallas and Houston. I am not sure if Austin is taking any, but San Antonio always takes in evacuees.

It just makes me glad that Victoria has Bass Strait (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bass_Strait), so we only have to deal with bushfires, lack of rain (and water restrictions (http://www.westernwater.com.au/library/scripts/objectifyMedia.aspx?file=pdf/55/21.pdf&siteID=2&str_title=Stage%203a.pdf)) and the occasion wild weather. :)

People live there just like people live in earthquake prone areas, etc. They like the area, or can't move out (can't afford it), etc. However, the biggest problem - in any area prone to storm surges - is that mankind has removed all the wetlands, mangrove swamps (tsunami area) which was nature's way of protecting the land. However, if you get flooded out twice, you should move. Parts of New Orleans should just be abandoned entirely and turned into an area to absorb storm surge.

There's some insane Australian chick who's staying in New Orleans in a bed and breakfast, and says she can sit out the storm. We'll probably be reporting on her death in a couple of days. Idiot.

Delurking to make a comment. I read somewhere that 80% of the oil production in the Gulf was in the path of Gustva, which, looking at that photo on that page, sounds about right. We already saw a 20 cent increase in gas prices here in South Texas.

My sister actually lived in New Orleans the last five or so years because her husband took a job there. They happen to have moved back to Houston just over a month ago. I'm betting they're glad they did!

Think it was 77% but well, no use splitting hairs ;) They said the gas prices will rise down south first, althoug I'm willing to bet they'll jack it up 20-25 cents by friday up here. and the stupid traders will make it even higher. wish i lived close enough to walk to work!

It's what we know, like other people know about living with cyclones/hurricanes or tornadoes. As long as it's not like the Ash Wednesday fires (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ash_Wednesday_fires). We, as a state and country learnt from them the hard way.
