I'd like a smartphone or iPhone, but....

While the phones aren't too pricey, the monthly plans are too much. I mean, I'd have to dump cable if I did that, so.... I'm looking for a netbook, one of those mini PCs so I can check my email at lunch (since all email at work is considered 'evil' - so AOL, Yahoo - is blocked, as are all 'social networking' places, including now, sniffle, Twitter).

So, does anybody have one or recommend any or hints on what I should look for on one? Thanks in advance!

I was just researching these myself. The ASUS EEE PC seems to be best reviewed and has the best battery life and a comfortable keyboard. Sony just came out with a netbook version of their VAIO that has a higher resolution screen, but the keyboard is less functional and I think the battery life is not so good. Basically netbooks are ok if you just want to check email and do some browsing or word processing, but they are very slow for multitasking. Processor speed has been sacrificed for price and battery life, seems like. However, I will probably eventually get one for travelling, but will wait for one with good battery life, a good keyboard, and higher resolution screen.

I'd like one even if they are slower, due to convenience. Hate to say it, but I like net access all the time. All the good stuff - twitter (sniff), email, etc. - blocked at work.

Would you even be able to access the internet at work with a netbook? You'd need a separate (unblocked) network to connect to.

Oh yes, have tried out the laptop (the HEAVIER laptop) and it pulls in cable WiFi, which fortunately runs along the road my work building is on ;)

But now I'm looking at iTouchs and going "oooh, teh pretty..." Darn. I need more money.
