Writers Guild Strike is happening on November 5th.

Well, it's confirmed now.

MultiChannel reports "On Friday, the board of the Writers Guild of America West and the council of the WGA East unanimously voted to approve the strike, which will start at 12:01 a.m. Monday, Nov. 5. The news was announced at a press conference in Los Angeles.

So.... the late night talk shows will be the first to fall, and then, scripted TV. If it drags on, you'll see a lot of folks in the peripheral industries (restaurants, etc.) hurting badly. Reality TV will infest the airwaves. Gawd, isn't there enough dreck on TV already? This will just make it breed...  well, I've got all these shows on DVD. Time to break 'em out!

Meanwhile, hard to tell how this affect TV shows made in Canada. Stargate Atlantis, according to the Skiffy blog, won't be affected since the writers aren't part of the American union, but what happens if a solidarity strike happens? Plus I remember when War of the Worlds, US product, made in Canada, got affected by the strike 20 years ago. Sad..

I saw this on the news last night, about the possible impending strike. Guess it's official now. :S

Not big on reality shows. The only one of interest to me is Kid Nation - *if* I remember to watch it when it's on, lol.

So long as SGA is safe. :)

Yeah, oddly enough, SGA is all I really care to watch. The rest, if it's delayed, well, I've got plenty of other stuff to do :)

All it needs is SAG to decide to join in...

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
If they do a solidarity strike, well, then it will affect SGA. Joe's a SAG member, sure that most of the rest are too.

Exactly.

Since filming on S4 is wrapped now, at least we will have SGA to see out this season, but it could definitely put a delay on S5...

It's all going to come down to how long the strike lasts. Hopefully not five months like the last one did. The world really does not need more reality show drek.

I remember the first strike...thank god reality shows didn't exist then, but now.... aieeee....

[identity profile] anjak-j.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah me too. Because it shortened the season of TNG it happened during. S2, I believe.

I only remember War of the Worlds...

I wonder how far head eppys have been written for things like Bones, Supernatural and Heroes?

As long as SGA isn't effected, but I don't want a delay for season 5.

grrrrrr

Most shows will get through the November sweeps, but after that.... if the strike is prolonged and goes into 2008, be prepared for reality shows to saturate the airwaves...

I don't watch
reality
TV but I watch Australian Idol (especially after the little diva had a hissy fit last week, tee hee).
I did watch a six part series called Choir Of Hard Knocks where they take a group of homeless people and turn them into a choir but I have heard that the choir make NO money from the CD's and DVD's or the concerts. Isn't this about helping the underprivileged?

This is probably why I dislike reality shows, besides the facts they're not really 'real.' A true reality show would be done with hidden cameras on unsuspecting people. Oh wait, I can see it now. "Premiering in prime time. Yes, watch people jaywatch across this road! Riveting traffic jams!"

[identity profile] kriadydragon.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, gosh, not another reality TV stint! The last one drove me up the wall. SGA is my passion show but so is CSI:NY. Guess I'm going to have to get that on DVD, too.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, if this strikes last, I suspect DVD sales will go up!

The good news is at least all of S4 is finished.

While I understand the dispute and need to strike, I hope this gets settled quickly. If there's a prolonged strike and people still watch reality TV, I think the networks will simply use it as an excuse to order more reality TV -type shows in the coming seasons - there's already been a few articles on how reality TV shows cost a lot less than your typical sitcom or drama. Sigh. Sadly, I work with people who actually have pools for who will win various shows. Sigh.

I am currently more concerned with the fact that Ford may strike, as that is where my husband works. I am hoping that the Writers Guild strike ends quickly and as equitably as possible.

Also:
Plus I remember when War of the Worlds, US product, made in Canada, got affected by the strike 20 years ago.

Dude. Way to make me feel old. :P

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2007-11-04 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm way more concerned with the declining dollar, escalating gas and heating oil prices, job data, etc. This US is really screwed up right now. I'm hoping the WGA strike is resolved quickly as it'll hurt a lot of people.

You remember War of the Worlds too? Heck, half the people on the net... I don't think they were even alive when that show was on! ;)
