Stargate Atlantis #501 - "Search and Rescue" SPOILERS

Yes, this is spoiler information on the first episode of season five of Stargate Atlantis. I suspect by this time tomorrow it will be all over the web. Anyway, do NOT read if you want to avoid spoilers.

However, I will say that I believe Lorne fans will be happy....

S P O I L E R S !!!

#501 – “Search & Rescue”

Guest characters include CAPTAIN ALISON PORTER (USAF Captain), TAYLOR, AMELIA (female gate technician), LT. EDISON, LORNE, KANAAN, MICHAEL (yes, that Michael).

As usual, information is subject to total change, names included, so take info with grain or two of salt ;)

Sheppard has returned from the future (“The Last Man”), and, CAPTAIN ALISON PORTER, listed as 28 years old and "attractive and fiery" has been there a week and is bored and says as much to Carter, who is still in command from the looks of it.

Boredom is halted when LT. EDISON returns through the gate, all dusty and whatnot. Apparently, in information not available (the teaser of the episode) Sheppard’s team (or at least part of it) found MICHAEL's nefarious compound, which has subsequently exploded. With the Daedalus hours away, Carter authorizes a rescue team and assigns Keller and PORTER to it.

Meanwhile, the team has problems. Lorne is injured, and a claustrophobic McKay is trapped with him.

And then there's a big info gap… and we next find MICHAEL in his ship, along with KANAAN (Teyla's main squeeze??) and they discover that Michael's secret compound has been found by the Lanteans. This could work to his advantage. So MICHAEL sends down some darts to attack. Carter (who went on the rescue mission) and the rescue team manage to find Lorne and McKay but two others are trapped.

Alas, outnumbered, outgunned, the Lanteans must retreat to orbit in cloaked jumpers and wait for the calvary (aka the Daedalus) to arrive.

And guess what? Yup, big gap here and then the very end…

PORTER, still bored, invites Keller for some drinks.

And Carter runs into McKay on the way to Teyla's room. And from the sounds of it, he delivered Teyla's baby.

And that's it. Again, all subject to change and interpretation

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The information is sketchy, and I'm reserving judgement, but PORTER (or whatever she will be named) sounds like a Cadet Hailey (from SG1) clone. Brilliant but with an attitude that quite frankly I don't think Weir would have tolerated. Woolsey would be turning purple ;)  Anyway, Leela Savasta , who played Dr. Esposito in "Tao of Rodney," apparently has the role. You can see photos of her, see her resume (she's done several Battlestar Galactica's as well)  at  http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2086012/.

Meanwhile, the whumper in me goes LORNE WHUMP! Yes, he's hurt! Trapped with McKay! I'm not sure where Sheppard, Ronon and Teyla are, although if Rodney did deliver the baby, that would mean Teyla was there, and I suspect, Sheppard as well.

And uh, Atlantis has a bar? I mean, if Porter suggests drinks with Keller (since she knows no one else on base and I guess maybe they did some bonding.

Hmm....

[identity profile] kimberlyfdr.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
In my February 2nd LJ entry (http://kimberlyfdr.livejournal.com/309490.html#cutid1) I posted the episode summary that SG1 Solutions had up (http://stargate-sg1-solutions.com/blog/?p=1092). It seems to be a little more with the details.

Sheppard has returned from the future and things are kind of hectic in the city of Atlantis. To make matters worse, Lt. Edison returns to the base without the rest of his team. They were trapped when the compound they were in off-world exploded. Edison is not certain of how many, if any, survivors there are because he lost radio contact with them. Carter gathers several teams for a Search and Rescue operation because the Daedalus is two hours away. The S&R team consists of new military member Capt. Alison Porter, combat engineers, and Dr. Jennifer Keller’s medical away team.

Trapped in the debris are Maj. Evan Lorne and Dr. Rodney McKay. The S&R teams have used three Puddle Jumpers in their operation, and once rescued, McKay pilots one with Carter as co-pilot, Keller and Porter riding behind them, and Lorne and some Marines occupying the seats in the back compartment. While they head for their Jumper, they are attacked by several Wraith darts that are under the command of Michael in his cruiser. The Wraith activate the Stargate, preventing the teams’ escape. The teams realize that the Wraith are also after the survivors who are still trapped on the planet and must be dug out (McKay said that two people remain trapped). Fortunately, the Jumpers are cloaked, but cannot engage twenty darts without great risk, so they decide to hide in orbit and await the arrival of the Daedalus.

Michael has as part of his cruiser crew Kanaan, the Athosian father of Teyla’s son (Gateworld actually has one line slightly different in that they say "...and Kanaan, the Athosian who Teyla believes fathered her child"). As it turned out, McKay delivered the baby, who returns to Atlantis with his mother. The excited McKay encounters Carter in the hallway on his way to see Teyla with flowers in his hand. Carter teases him that there are rumors that Teyla was going to name the boy “Rodney”, avoiding his question about why she is carrying a couple of bags. In the meantime, Porter tries to make new friends in the Lost City of Atlantis.

Interesting. I'm really hoping Kanaan does not turn out to be a wraithworshiper, or in league with Michael in some way.

Also not thrilled about the casting news for Porter. You're not the only one being reminded of Cadet Hailey. And about the same age too, in spite of being a Captain. Can't they find any older looking actresses out there anymore? Or are they just catering to the "eye-candy" demographic now?

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I had all those details but have decided not to post every iota, having learned from last year it sorta saps some fun from the season....

but it will be interesting to see how everybody interprets the information as it comes out.

[identity profile] whisper99.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god, Porter sounds like a nightmare.

Re: Hmm....

[identity profile] whisper99.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Mckay pilots with Carter as co-pilot!? *blink*

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
When I saw the photo of the actress, I just thought, 'are there no actresses over 30 who don't have long flowing hair?' I dont' mean that in any nasty sense, but they seem to cast the same 'type' of woman all the time. Plus just seeing what I did about Porter, she reminded me a lot of Hayley (Hailey(sp?)) and I'm not overly fond of young 'upstarts.' I suppose the only plus is that Porter will have to wear a uniform and not be one of the many female denizens of the Pegasus Galaxy who wear low cut, tight squeezing tops to show off their, um, assets ;)

[identity profile] whisper99.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, last question. How does Teyla not know who the baby-daddy is??

Re: Hmm....

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Since when did Carter get the gene???

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Hopefully not.

Re: Hmm....

[identity profile] kimberlyfdr.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Rodney has the gene, Carter doesn't. He'd have to be the pilot (and he's good at it, as Adrift showed, John taught him well)

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Good question. I don't think we'll know until the episode airs (or more spoilers leak) as most stuff out right now is pretty vague.

[identity profile] kimberlyfdr.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
She THINKS he's the father. I, however, think that Michael had more to do with this than anyone realizes.

Re: Hmm....

[identity profile] whisper99.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Oh! I didn't realize you needed the gene to pilot the ship still!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I hope there's no genetically-engineered miracle-gro kids in our future....

[identity profile] ladyniko.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what a good portion of folks are wondering.....

Re: Hmm....

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
As far as i know you need the gene to fly the ship, which is why they had to scramble to find gene folk in "Lifeline" to pilot the jumpers to play, er, blow up the asteroids...

[identity profile] ladyniko.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I wish they'd bring back Cadman - I liked her - she was cool and you know she's good at snarking right back to Rodney.... :)

But, that would like require sense on the parts of JM & PM. And, JM certainly seems above that. :p

Re: Hmm....

[identity profile] kimberlyfdr.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
That was Adrift...Lifeline was the Elizabeth episode where they took over the Replicator planet.

[identity profile] kristen999.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 01:45 am (UTC)(link)

I was hoping against hope for something new from teh stuff thats been out there...um..the McKay and Lorne storyline sounds cool, but it would seem the "The Last Man" is this very gripping eppy and this begins with

..."and Sheppard returns from the future"....eeep. Like no big deal.

Hopefully Teyla, Ronon and Sheppard have I dunno bigger roles then this Porter person who goes on the rescue?

Maybe the gaps are just that. I won't get too annoyed this is freaking Sept I suspect and we still haven't seen season 4 to the end yet, but this spoiler has left me feeling...um..not so thrilled.

Though I don't plan on reading any spoilers past this for season 5 if I can help it.

It's just...we know these writers. Normal pregnancy and normal baby doesn't seem to be something within their realm. I'm interested in seeing how it all plays out, though!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
I am hoping we'll get something more than just 'oh, Sheppard has returned from the future so things are hectic' type stuff. Oh the gaps are like whole chunks of dialogue unavailable, which, honestly, is fine by me. I don't want to know all the plots ahead of time. Bits and pieces, okay, but not the whole thing.

Re: Hmm....

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I always get those two confused. THey're the 'lost in space' episodes in my mind...

[identity profile] kristen999.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I usually like vague spoilers like TV Guide type summaries but a friend of mine sent me the link to that article and I read it thinking it was something else..lol

Now that I feel uneasy about, this may be the only eppy I'll keep an eye out just because of the uneasy feeling I have about it now.

But yes typically give me an idea what an eppy is...and hats all I want to know.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
The trouble is that TV Guide these days, like SciFi, can give massive bits of plots in just one sentence. I think someone sits there going "how can we spoil this?" ;)

Re: Hmm....

[identity profile] ellymelly.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
hell, i'm happy :D lol

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oh... I thought you were joking about the bar thing. Does this mean Zelenka's fanon distilling experiments have been shut down? (Or has he become Guinan, complete with silly hat (http://daviddonaldson.com/LAF/sheList/Guinan.jpg)?)

Am thus far underwhelmed by Miss Espisito PORTER, but time will tell. And Female Chuck's name is Amelia? I so want them to pull a Graham Dave on that. But nice that they're considering giving Female Chuck a name.

[identity profile] roxy-palace.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think Porter will be cool. Also she is totally hot. New love interest for Shep? Are they chickening out after gaying him up for the past five episodes??

But I do wish they'd thought of bringing Cadman back. She was gorgeous and very, very cool.

I too am concerend by the "And then John sauntered back from the future and never thought about it again. Ever." thing.

But still, season five!!!! Episode 100!!!!

Yay!

[identity profile] roxy-palace.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Forgot to mention that it is kind of annoying that Flanigan is 42, Hewlett is in his late thirties and yet they hire a 12 year old femme foil for the show? Very annoying. There's got to be a fit 30+ woman out there who could hold her own opposite those guys. C'mon!

[identity profile] roxy-palace.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
My money is on someone kidnapping the kid, allowing Teyla back into active action and giving them a very personalised central story arc for the whole season.

Maybe the dad?

I hope there's some John and Kanana, or whatever his name is, face off action.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'm curious where the female Chuck came from. Anybody know if Chuck is back?

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
It's a matter of casting and the producers actually allowing a woman (besides Tapping) over 35 into the guest category.... I really think that. There are talented actresses over 35...

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if Sheppard can get sucked dry by a wraith and brush it off like dandruff, then.... oh wait, he'll deal with it in between seasons ;) Sorry for the sarcasm ...
ext_2410: (Aha!)

[identity profile] kimberlyfdr.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Umm...Joe's 41 (just turned 41 in January) and David turns 40 in April. Just wanted to put that out there because they're only a year apart :)

[identity profile] darkrosetiger.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
My first thought was, "Wow, she's totally John's type." Think about it: all of the women he's had some interest in--Chaya, Teer, Larrin, Nancy--have light-brown skin and long brownish hair.

[identity profile] darkrosetiger.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
...like, say, Torri Higginson. I still suspect that in addition to the fact that she actually challenged them on the lack of female writers or producers, Weir was ditched because of a perception that Torri was too old to bring in the 18-25 male demographic.

[identity profile] roxy-palace.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
EXACTLY! Hewlett is a very young looking 40. Nice one DHew! And JFlan is a very very young looking 41.

KimberlyFDR you must get sick of having to correct me all the time...Cheers mate.

[identity profile] roxy-palace.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
Never be sorry for sarcasm.

Actually, I think they do it deliberately so we have plenty of fodder for canon gap filler fic. ;)

Seriously though, the worst one was Seige...where have all the ancients gone? Oh, they died. Moving right along...

In NZ they split the season so the mid year hiatus is actually our end of season. So it was even more jarring for having to wait six months...wondering what Atlantis under the original management would be like...I felt like I'd been pick pocketed or something. Tres sucky.

[identity profile] lelianamckay.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
Ah!! So a tiny bit more info about the epi..
Thanks!!
By the way, Porter has now become Vega...according to JM.

[identity profile] alaxes.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds very interesting! Can't wait 'till season 5 will start...

[identity profile] ladyniko.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I had thoughts of it being Michael when they first announced they were going to write in her pregnancy, because, hello - how long did he have her alone in 3x19 last season?

And, well, we know our dorks for writers.... heaven forbid the women actually are allowed

Didn't Joe Flanigan turn 41 on January 5th???

yeah, I think they're typecasting the females ;)

Yup, she's now named after a subcompact car put out by Chevrolet in the 1970s ;)

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be lying if I said I hadn't considered that SciFi pushed for a younger or more sought-after actress...

[identity profile] roxy-palace.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm a doofus.
