The effect of the writer's strike, and other stuff

It meant I watched more movies, read some books, etc.

First, a shame the writers strike didn't hit when some ninny decided to remake KNIGHT RIDER, which I'm watching right now, which is pretty much a travesty of the old NBC series. First, KITT sounds so droll and boring that, yawn, geez, well, yawn. Michael Tracer (new name) is a guy who beds two women at once, owes $90K to someone for something and well, wow, sure ain't the Michael Hasselhoff character. While I realize the Hollywood folk want to sex up the show, make it more 'edgy', I just go 'eeeeuuuuuu.' The car's pretty, but that's about it. I think the girl in the car who has been cringing and screaming for the last five minutes does cartoon voiceovers. At least she sounds familiar.

Meanwhile, I caught PAN'S LABRYINTH on cable. Wow, now that was an interesting flick. I don't see too many subtitled movies and it's interesting to watch as foreign films can be so... oh, foreign... compared to U.S. films. The fantasty of the labryinth world as opposed to the nastiness of the war going on was incredible, and the violence was stark. I do remember a review about the movie years ago in which they talked about the violence. I cringed when the one guy's face got smashed in - repeatedly. But, definitely an excellent flick with very good actors. And then watched a bunch of sappy Valetine's/romance movies over the last couple weeks, mostly on Lifetime. They're just fun to watch.

Read the horror novel THE LOCH, about the Loch Ness monster, of course. Penned by Steve Alten (who also wrote MEG, which I haven't read, about a huge man-eating shark) drew in a nice selection of the area into the story (so if you knew nothing about the Loch Ness area before, you'll know a lot by the time you're done with the book). And it's hard to find books with man-eating critters, besides vampires, nowadays. Ah, the good old day sof big critters eating the hapless human-folk ;)

But now TV is coming back to life, but.... dind't really miss it. Stargate Atlantis is about the only show I actually plan to watch 'live.' I like the CSIs but tape them half the time. Once SGA ends, I guess that means some stuff will be back on the air so I can watch that (and NBC is re-purposing PSYCH and MONK to their network in March, so since I didn't watch them as they're against SGA, I can watch them now) :) I'm avoiding the reality/game shows. Whowever said there would be 500 channels and nothing to watch was sure correct!

Pan's Labryinth was an amazing film, loved the the harsh reality between the 'real life' and the fantasy. I used to rec this film to people when I was at Best Buy.

The only other subtitled film I saw last year was "Downfall" which was a German moive that depicted the last thirty days of Hitler while he hid in his bunker. The acting was amazing.

Only shows I realyl care about are "Supernatural" although I want to see some "Bones" and "NCIS". I'm just happy the strike is over, means they can begin the actor talks NOW and have plenty of time before June to stem that one.

I've been recording SUPERNATURAL but at the rate I'm going, i'll just buy the DVD set and add it to the other two DVD sets that I'll get around to watching one of these days ;)

Pan's Labyrinth is outstanding, even though it hurt to watch.

I miss Pushing Daisies, and I miss Journeyman a little bit. Other than that? I was actually relieved not to have more s2 of Heroes! I would probably have quit watching Bionic Woman if I hadn't known the strike would take the choice away.

On balance, the strike made no difference to me, except for losing the nine or so more episodes we'd have gotten of Pushing Daisies. I love that show (to my surprise).

Oh yes, Pushing Daisies... forgot about that. It's a fun show but I guess I didn't really miss it, but I'd like to see more of it, and hope if it gets a season two, they don't muck it up.

Yep, there's really nothing on right now - or was this true even before the strike? I'm glad CBS has picked up 'Dexter,' since I've heard lots about it, but there's really nothing on cable besides SGA, to the point that I'm getting rid of cable tomorrow (and saving $55 a month). Itunes and network TV cover most of my viewing needs, especially since I'm supposed to be studying for my comps (halfway to my PhD - woohoo!).

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-02-18 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
SGA and the TLC and Discovery channels are about the only reasons I keep cable, besides the fact I can't pull in crap with the rabbit ears, which will soon be useless thanks to the US Gov't selling off those airwaves. Twits. Anyway, read a lot about Dexter and a show that makes a hero of sorts out of a serial killer? Eh, pass...

My area is unfortunately all-digital, but the cable monopoly here offers tiered system, so I cut back to the most basic level, which includes the local channels and a few extras like the Discovery channel. I tell myself that I'm not really suffering since the cable money is getting transferred to my 'travel fund' so I can go back to London next Jan. for Pegasus4.

Watched 'Dexter' and wasn't impressed.

Heh.... I haven't been able to watch "live" TV in over a year - limited income meant I had to give up my dish.

I live far enough outside the city that I don't get anything but some fuzzy local channels and well, "reality" shows just totally aren't my cup of tea.

Until the networks (this includes cable & broadcast) can provide more intelligent programming, I'll just skip worrying about trying to get my dish back up & running. (Besides, it's only 3 more weeks of SGA until what - fall again?)

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-02-18 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, i'm probably going to cut my cable back. They jacked up the price again and there's less to watch.

Bravo cable company! :-p

Way to lose customers.... /sarcasm

The Internet is for porn! my friend - practically anything I want to watch is up for download in some form or fashion.

Heh. Yeah, I think everything can be downloaded somewhere.

Knight Rider just isn't Knight Rider without Mr Feeney as the voice of KITT :(

It was awful. They needed someone who could punch some life into the voice of KITT.

I love Women's Murder Club and Chuck!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-02-18 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried Chuck but couldn't get into it, unless Adam Baldwin is there ;)

Yes, and don't they underutilise him!

On Pan's Labyrinth...

The fantasty of the labryinth world as opposed to the nastiness of the war going on was incredible, and the violence was stark.

Ditto what you said. Interesting film.

Knight Rider was ok. Saw a couple of ads for new game shows while watching that. Amnesia could be fun. Probably won't watch it though. My Dad's better than yours sounded petty.

The only ads I really remember were for the contest and I went, huh, KITT changed color? Where was I? Oh yeah, surfing the net ;)
