Do you have a website on AOL? Well, not for much longer!

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] oxbastetxo , I have discovered the awful news that AOL is ditching all websites that its users have created. AOL  Hometown, or not Hometown, it's gonna go into a black hole on Halloween.

And gee, did I get an email about it? Noooooooooo (yes, insert mountains of sarcasm here).

So, if you have a site on AOL, start saving it NOW. And, I am now looking for another host for my stuff, preferably free (since my discretionary income is going into heating oil, alas). Any suggestions out there?

So, my Stargate Atlantis fanfiction site is gonna have to be moved, plus my humongous CSI site.

I received that email yesterday and I don't even have a website on AOL.
what morons!!
I wonder how many other people who use it haven't received anything about them disappearing?

And I have two websites and received nothing. ARGH!!!!!!!!

Google has a free web service. All you have to do is sign up for gmail.

I have my web site on their google pages. They're in the process of switching over to something else, though.

How nice of AOL to let everyone know. This is why I'm glad to have my own hosting.

There are a list of freehosts HERE. I don't know about the mileage with some of them...

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-10-02 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
how do you do your own hosting? and i'll check out the freebies.

[identity profile] anjak-j.livejournal.com 2008-10-02 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Own hosting = paid for hosting. It's not as expensive to find good hosts as you'd think. I've thought about the idea of setting up my own webserver a few times though...

I'd forgotten about Google as a free host.

If you can't find anything else, I can set up space on my server. I have gigabytes worth of storage that I'm not using, and I should be able to set it up so that you can still manage it yourself.

thanks. i'll let you know. I've got 30, er, 29 days left! ;)

AOL fails, but at least you have a lot of options to use now. Must preserve precious, precious fanfiction :D

I'm going to be doing a LOT of downloading this week. Can't lose my fanfic!

[identity profile] logovo.livejournal.com 2008-10-02 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Keep in mind that the OTW will be launching their archive pretty soon. That will be free hosting w/no ads, room for comments, tagging, etc.

Sorry, should have maybe used a link.

This explains it better...

If it helps, I've been on Tripod forever. Well, for about ten years now (that's like centuries in the internet world! LOL), without any complaints. It's a very simple interface, and I upload using a standard FTP protocol, though I think you can upload directly to their website if you don't have an FTP that you use.

Worth checking into, at any rate. I have the "Pro" version, so I do pay a small amount for no ads and bigger bandwidth and stuff.

Meanwhile, I do keep meaning to get my own domain, but I just never got around to it. But, if you *do* think about getting your own domain, I'd check out www.godaddy.com -- they're inexpensive and have gotten great reviews for both service and reliability. It's not much more than what you would pay for an upgraded service from tripod or any other the other web hosters....

I have my site on Tripod and can recommend it. It has a very easy to use FTP (if you don't have a FTP uploader, try Filezilla, it's free and I've had no problems with it) and you can create pages onsite if you don't want to use FTP (I prefer to use Nvu to create pages and then upload them; Nvu is free but limited and has a tendency to crash now and then, but hey, it's FREE!! It does have a html option for techies.*g*).

Anyway, the basic tripod is free, I pay a nominal charge for the next level up.
