Darned windows (as in glass)

Today I was walking through the parking lot at work, dodging bits and pieces of trees, pine cones, etc., the usual stuff that comes down in the fall, when I spotted this mobile green thing. Upon closer examination, I saw it was a tiny tiny bird. Poor thing! Looks like it flew into one of the many wonderfully shiny reflecting-the-sky windows and then hit the parking lot. Seeing as how it was right in the path of oncoming traffic if someone came into the lot, I put it in a yard near the parking lot. It didn't seem to mind all that much as it seemed dazed. I stuck it next to a fallen branch and leaves, as it was pretty windy and very chilly. Couldn't do much more so came back before lunch hour ended and it was looking better. I put my finger down to touch it and it tried to bite me, so that was promising (I was wearing gloves). Checked at end of day and there was no sign of the bird, so I'd like to think it recovered and flew off and didn't get eaten by any prowilng tabbies. Anyway, here's a picture of the little fellow. Not sure of the species.

UPDATE: This little is a Connecticut warbler! You can find a clearer shot here.

Poor little thing. So glad you helped it. Now it will live to poop on more windshields!!

I couldn't just leave the poor thing there. Fingers crossed it will be nailing car windshields once again :)

Yeah, especially those big honking SUVS that go through the lot. SHudder.

Hmm... looks maybe like a type of warbler? They're all pretty small, maybe 5-6" from tip to tip, at the biggest.

Oh this one was teeny. Easy to fit in one hand.

Ah, maybe a young'un then!

Possibly. I'm pretty clueless with birds, except crows and bluejays, the most frequent visitors to our yard.

So cute! I'd like to think he recovered too.

Poor little Wax Eye. I love those little guys. They are so friendly and sweet.

So, you're in New Zealand too??

No, northeast USA! Maybe we have the same birds?

Awwww.....I'm glad you were able to save the cute little critter from a possible dismal end. I'm sure it's pecking was it's way of showing it's gratitude. :D

TJ and I found a baby bird and unfortunately it was closer to dead than I would have liked. How do you explain this to a little kid! He had only just recovered from seeing their dog run over!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately I see more dead than alive critters on the roads, so know the feeling. First fox I ever saw was flattened on the road.

Yeah but were you only 4?

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Um, don't think so.... I can't remember 4!

Awwww...cute little birdy!
I a few years ago I had to rescue a bird from the clutches of my cats mouth! I brought it inside and waited for the poor thing to recover, after about 20 minutes it seemed to come around and realized where it was! I spent the next few minutes trying to get it to go out the door!! So I think your little bird recovered and flew away, they are more hardy than they look.
May your kindness be returned to you!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I had that happen once. Opened the door, let the cat in, and he had a bird in his mouth! I screamed, he ran upstairs, tripped and the bird flew up and I chased it around the house till I caught it in the bathroom and released it outside. Phew!

So glad you helped it - it's very cute. You might want to check out [livejournal.com profile] backyard_birds. If you post the pic there, someone will be sure to identify the bird for you (and I know they'd love to see the pic and hear the story).

It worked! The little guy is a Connecticut warbler. I wouldn't have known a warbler if it fell on me (well, almost did!)
