Star Trek, the new movie (*thar be spoilers!*)

Okay, MASSIVE spoiler ridden mini review/comments/blathering on the Star Trek movie below the cut. Click at your own risk!

Is there a subtitle to the movie? I just call it Star Trek.

Anyway, I'm trying to think of what to tell a co-worker tomorrow. I can't spill spoilers, so I'm going to choose 'interesting' or 'different' as my vague comment.

But it's NOT the Star Trek we're accustomed to on TV. Why? cuz they blow up Vulcan, oblierate billions of people, kill Spock's mom, Kirk's dad, and well, it took me over half the film to go 'okay, I'm starting to warm up to Kirk, cuz he was, well, a jerk for a lot of the film. Amazingly, Spock was my favorite because we did see his growth, and whoa, Spock and Uhura???

If you watch this film as an alternate universe and don't sputter "but they didn't do that in the show!" you'll do fine, I think. It reminded me, SPX wise, of a cross between Babylon 5 and those shadow things and the action of Transformers (and you'll probably see a trailer for the second flick before Trek).

As a whumper, I went whoa... they beat the crap out of Kirk multiple times. Favorite scene was on Hoth, er, the ice planet with the critters chasing and trying to eat him.While Kirk was rather a jerk, getting himself beaten up and you didn't feel sorry for him (in the beginning of the flick - angry young man who has to work out his problems), it did lead the way to him maturing somewhat. I suppose the Kirk of the TV show had to grow up from something ;) but Chris Pine did a good job of patterning Kirk's mannerisms, except tugging on the shirt, cuz they have better uniforms now, and praise be, in the future, everybody is slim and fit and there's not a single love handle in sight! *snort*

Spock meanwhile, I think won the movie. Zachary Q was great in that role! And Leonard Nimoy as elder Spock was in it a lot more than I thought he'd be.

Ah, sigh, Paul McGillion from Stargate Atlantis in such a small role. Darn. I like Simon Pegg, but okay, for the life of me, when he started talking I went 'ohmygawd, he's doing oh, oh, that Scottish talk show host on late night CBS - excuse me while I go find a TV Guide - ah! Craig Ferguson! Tell me that he's NOT doing a Craig Ferguson imitation!

Chekov sorta grated on me with the accent but I did like him, and Sulu with his 'fencing' (as combat skills) sure did prove handy. And ohmygawd, who did NOT see it coming.... when Kirk, Sulu and oh, Connors, dove down toward the tower, I'm going "redshirt! redshirt! that guy is gonna die!!!" (well, in my head, I'd have been chucked out of the theater if I'd yelled that). Yup, and die he did, quick but gruesome.

Overall, I liked it, although it took a while to get used to NOT having a certain kind of music, and getting assaulted with all the fast and furious action. I definitely see a future in this franchise, and yeah, I'll shell out another $10 or wahtever to see itl. I decided to see a *gasp* nighttime showing because I figured, okay, no screaming kids (yes, there were none!) and maybe people wouldn't realize it was out yet (yeah, I got there and it was like, just me?? but the small theater filled up 3/4 which was decent).

So, thumbs up from me.

Just got home and I'm in love with the reboot and mostly it's because of how awesome Chris Pine/Zachary Quinto pulled off the new Kirk/Spock. I think they truly did a fantastic job of bringing the series back without screwing up. The music change was kind of 'mmmm....not sure....kinda like it...' and the action was pretty intense. The death of Vulcan really shook me.

But wow they really did cast well. I think the weakest one recast was Chekov but in that I think he was just a bit too hyper etc. Chekov in the OS was an eager puppy but he was a laid back eager puppy. ;)

Overall big thumbs up. Wish I could see it again like now but will have to wait. *cry* All the little things they slipped in from the old shows cracked me up. McCoy jabbing kirk with hypos, the 'w' for v, the sulu screwing up at piloting the ship out with the fleet, the beagle, the vulcan death grip, oh god so many to love!

And btw, Pike? Full of awesome.

Oh god, I was so glad Pike survived. I was like "nooo, don't kill off Bruce Greenwood!" Yeah, they got in the Vulcan 'death grip,' 'fascinating' and little things, and I loved how McCoy got Kirk on the enterprise and all the shots he kept giving him!

The music was... I like the music on the tv shows better, and the Beastie Boys would not be my first choice of a song but I suppose it suited the young terror of James Kirk...

omg the whole thing how McCoy snuck him aboard was perfect... so Bones! And Kirk's reaction and the whole bit just had us all cracking up so bad. Priceless. I really enjoyed the actual story told, it was the right mix of humor, wow and omg so sad.

I'm left with this plot bunny, wanting a story where Ambassador Spock gets to spend a few more moments with young Kirk because what must Spock feel, his friend is gone, his world is gone, he's marooned in a past that doesn't line up anymore to what he had, and here's his lifelong friend, and he probably has missed him a great deal. That scene in the cave with them gave me quite a lump.

Yeah, the cave scene was great. I think that was a turning point for Kirk as well. And McCoy was great.

I've got to find a classic Trek to watch. Been eons!

Um...it's not a matter of watching it as if it's an AU. It *is* an AU.

From the second the Romulans came through the rift and engaged the Kelvyn, things shifted, and the entirety of what followed is an alternate universe. The only way they could have saved this, and even *tried* to call it non-AU is if they'd reset after the Romulan ship was destroyed.

I absolutely loved this -- by setting it as an AU, Abrams & Co can make more movies, and not have to worry about stepping all over canon in the way that ENT sometimes did -- we can have *new* adventures while they're all still young!

I thought Karl Urban as McCoy was perfect; the last thing I saw him in was Doom, so I totally did not expect him to have the acting chops for it.

I greatly enjoyed this movie and want to see it again in the theater--which is a feeling I haven't had about any film in years! It managed to have silly moments without being camp and I truly appreciated that. Really, I'm still blown away by how much I enjoyed the film.

I honesty don't think I've ever seen Karl Urban, but then went, hey, this guy does a good McCoy. I actually felt I got my money's worth out of this flick.

I know Karl Urban from when he was Cupid on the series "Hercules" and Caesar on "Xena". I saw him once at a Hercules/Xena convention.

Karl was a blond Eomer of the Rohan in the last two "Lord of the Rings" movies. I'm pretty sure I have his action figure in a box somewhere.

Other genre roles have been on "The Chronicles of Riddick", "Ghost Ship" and "Doom". For non-genre roles, he was in "The Bourne Supremacy" and the tv mini-series "Comanche Moon".

this new Star Trek is so much fun, especially after what a letdown Wolverine ended up being; the new Capt. Kirk is a lot more more believable as a leader-type than William Shatner

this is coming from someone who was NEVER a fan of Star Trek. Honestly the only reason I was ever hyped up about the movie was because I'm a huge fan of JJ Abrams. And let me tell you that after this movie he has my unconditional love.

Also, I never though I'd be saying this... but I LOVED Spock. And... OMG Kirk too.

I've seen it twice. Today was the digital version... much better sound.
