Look what the thunderstorms left!

We had some hefty thunderstorms roll through today. In fact, they came just in time for rush hour. Nice. NOT. Luckily I got home before the skies opened up, but wasn't in the house more than ten minutes before the storms really hit and poof, off went the power, again. Sigh.

Anyway, an or so later, some really cool clouds appeared in the sky. Mammatus clouds, which I've never seen in this area before, ever. Anyway, here are some photos. But first, the storm clouds...

Oooo! Nifty! They almost look like watercolour paintings.

We had a small tornado west of Toronto yesterday. Don't you just love how these weather things are happening in places they're not supposed to? /o\

it seems like it and yet there was a tornado just outside of toronto when I lived there in 1980.

[identity profile] euphoricagony.livejournal.com 2009-06-27 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
True...they're just happening a little more often these days. It's not all that surprising for us to hear of funnel clouds around here anymore.

When I was in Toronto many moons ago, we were down on Yonge Street and these BLACK clouds were moving in (worthy of Spielberg SPX from Raiders of the Lost Ark). Huge downpour and winds. Later we found out there's been a waterspout out on the lake.

But weather pattern is definitely changing.

Puuurdy :D

Because of where we live, clouds like that make me nervous. They usually mean a tornado is likely to drop down :S

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-06-27 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
We had a tornado warning for the county a two hours before these appeared. They only lasted, maybe 15 minutes?

[identity profile] spike21.livejournal.com 2009-06-27 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-06-27 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I thought so too :)

...and you know how "mammatus" clouds look like??? cool! Very nice pretty pics! Hope they are/were not a sign of something worse to come.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-06-27 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, have see pictures on the net and thought, gee, I'll never see 'em. They were the 'after' of a severe thunderstorm line which also gave us a brief tornado warning.

Great pics!

Thanks!

Woah, impressive! And scary at the same time! I've never seen such clouds for real, only on pics, but I wish I could see them one day, because I'm incredibly fond of so fantastic looking weather phenomenons. Some of them are dangerous, but for some time now I'm fascinated by them and try to learn a bit more about the weather (if only meteorology wasn't so difficult...).

Aren't those Mammatus clouds connected with tornados? I hope nothing bad happened where you live!
Lately, we also had quite a few tornados here in Germany. When I grew up, people said that tornados don't exist in Germany, but that's wrong. They are indeed rare, but they can happen. We have more of them these days, but I don't know if that is because the climate's changing, or if it just seems as if there are more just because they're better documented today because nearly everyone carries a camera around nowadays and can immediately start filming when something happens. The tornados here are of course much smaller than in the USA and dissolve much sooner, that's due to the climatic conditions and geological structures in Europe. But they're still impressive for us here. Personally, I still haven't seen a tornado yet, but I'd like to - from afar. :)

From what I read, mammatus clouds don't necessarily portend bad weather, but... t hey came after we went through a tornado warning and a severe thunderstorm line. They're part of thunderstorms, and I've NEVER seen them ever in this area. Definitely shows shifting weather patterns.

Beautiful!! They would win picture of the day hands down.

Thanks :)

Some pretty pics. Yeah we have had those storms here recently. Not too nice. We had a storm come through the second weekend in May that was really bad. No tornado but our house was shaking. I was at work and hubby home with kids. I have seen some nasty weather while at work but that day was kind of freaked out. 100 mile hour winds and story. We could not see the gas tanks outside at work was that bad.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-06-27 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't want a storm that bad, no thanks! Of course, hurricane season is here so I keep waiting for some horrific one to finally show up, as it's been years.

Cool. We had a huge thunderstorm too, very electrical. Quarter size hail here, baseball size nearby. It was after dark though, so we couldn't eyeball the clouds.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-06-27 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
They said there could be hail. Glad there wasn't. Car may be old, but don't want it dinged to bits!

Gorgeous clouds! Thanks for sharing! :D

You're welcome. So glad I caught it on camera.

Great pictures! We've had a lot of storms here lately too, but nothing that photogenic (or at least I couldn't take photos like that).

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-06-28 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well, just pure luck I got a call from friend at EMS who said "look at the clouds!" so I grabbed my camera and went outside and went 'whoa!!'

[identity profile] jedi40.livejournal.com 2009-06-27 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
We got hammered in our part of the State last night as well...did not get any clouds like that were we are ..though we did have a twister warning and lots of rain and thunderstorms. Up in Northern CT were hit the hardest. More storms on the way for tonight and tomorrow..oh joy.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-06-28 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Your portion of the state always gets hammered. Shudder.

[identity profile] jedi40.livejournal.com 2009-06-28 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah and I hate that it is that way.
