It's dead, Jim

Remember my pretty sunflower (pictures at http://wraithfodder.livejournal.com/476361.html) ? Well, it got a little old.

sunflower
and then....

I can only assume a deer did the evil deed, as it must have reached over the fencing, broke the stalk and then ate the flower down to this.

Aww :( the second picture looks like something out of a horror movie, only for plants.

Uh oh, poor little sunflower!

I was really surprised it lasted as long as it did.

Awww. Poor flower.

Unfortunately the critters (and weather) have not been kind to my garden this year...

Actually, the sunflower was merely ripening. If it hadn't been eaten by the damn deer, the big petals around the disc would have shriveled and dried out, as the seeds enlarged and darkened.

The one time I tried growing sunflowers (here in Ohio), the birds started in on them when they were only a little further along than your first picture. Which, dudes! The seeds weren't ripe yet!

I actually had this silly idea of maybe eating the seeds myself. Of course, I would have had to encase it in hardware cloth to make it last that long! ;)

I wonder how they keep the animals away from the giant fields of sunflowers in where ever it is that they grow all the sunflowers for the seeds we eat? I mean I assume they have giant fields of sunflowers, somewhere.....

Poor baby, it made it pretty far though.

ah, chemicals and so many flowers that chipmunks couldn't decimate the flowers ;) well, it looks better than the pumpkin. poor thing. RIP.
