Snakes and deer, oh my!

Here's the snake that I almost stepped on the other night, down in the basement. I stuck it in a cooking pot, as it was handy, and it was tiny, a young hatchling. I put on plastic gloves cuz I know from experience as soon as you pick up a snake, they exude this awful stench (aka piss) all over your hands. Yech! It was cute, and good thing to know, non-venemous. I released him in the pachysandra patch.



Meanwhile, I spied a young buck in the backyard.  He glared at me, of course, although I was a distance away.



Now to sort out and load up my Hurricane Irene pictures...

So what is it?? A racer?
I would have no problem with that, other than had I stepped on it,
but I would have had a problem had it been big and hairy and many legs variety..............

It's a ringneck snake. Very young as it was tiny. It's rare I see bucks in the yard. I know one passed through our yard a year ago as I ran over an antler with the lawnmower. Fortunately only knicked it. Now it's on the shelf.

Sure, why not? But I did wear gloves cuz I know they piss on you to make you drop them.

Snakes are odd critters - guess peeing on what ever is disturbing it is the best get away defense.

Yeah, frogs do it too. I think all reptiles and amphibians have that 'defense' mechanism. believe me, it works. That's why I wore gloves as you have to really scrub to remove the stench.

Meanwhile, yup, lovely deer. We have three does and a fawn that go through the yard as well. Lately I noticed only two doe and found the third one today. I think it got hit by a car. It's left hind leg is just a mess. It can still move around but the injury doesn't look like the deer can last the winter... looks like the femur is broken in half. Hard to tell but leg is about six inches too short. Sigh. Hate to think it but the coyotes will probably get the poor thing, as animal control can't run around town trying to find it.
