Another holiday, another storm and no power. Gah!

Yup, for Labor Day, we had Hurricane Irene, and for Halloween, we got Storm Alfred (yup, that's the name!) On Saturday, October 29th the snow came in... pretty fast, and VERY wet and heavy. Add 5-7" of that rather quickly and I stood outside just listening to the trees snapping off branches and alas, one very very big tree snapping off at the roots and falling across the road and taking out the power lines. And several phone poles are now cracked at the base so will need to be replaced. Sigh. They say we'll have power back by Saturday, they hope. ARGH! If not for the generator, we'd be sitting in cold and dark. Luckily, AMAZINGLY, actually, Cablevision came back tonight. I was shocked. As long as I get to see all of Flashpoint tonight on ION TV....

A favorite shot. Fungus on a tree in the snow.

timber!
Thi is a two lane road, and that's the tree across it. Which landed in a driveway. Mailbox is in there somewhere, and at left, you can see the power lines sagging underneath. Sigh.

I love colorful leaves against black lampposts and snow.

Love the first pic (fungus/tree). Is it wrong for me to admit that I'm glad it didn't hit here as my trees are also full of leaves? That same murder of crows haunts the trees here as well. (Who ever named the group of birds a 'murder' was a genius as the nasty feathered noise-makers makes a person want to commit the act!)

yeah, i wouldn't wish this storm on anyone, well, maybe the finance people who caused the financial meltdown, but I'm sure they all are in the Bahamas or something. Anyway, yeah, it's a mess. Public is POed at power company who takes forever to fix stuff. If I had a chainsaw, I'd be clearing the road myself!

Cool pics, particularly the last three! But no electric other than from your generator isn't good - let's hope they get it fixed sooner than they expect!

yup, without generator we'd literally be in the dark! right now a cable news van is down the road waiting for the power company to show up. I don't think it's happening...

Snow is so pretty. I think that if I lived in a place with snow, I'd never get sick of it!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
You only say that until it crashes down the trees ;) Or wait, wait, come visit. I need someone to shovel it when the next blizzard comes!

[identity profile] alyssa22.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
Crazy as it sounds, I think that would be fun. You always see people doing that on TV. Over here? No. So yes, it would be a novelty! Maybe I can hire myself out over winter!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
Hire? Darn, I was sorta looking for some free labor who would work for room (as for food, we have squirrels you can catch at the bird feeder) ;)

[identity profile] alyssa22.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahah. The vegan wouldn't be catching the squirrels. They'd be nice to play with, though!

I saw it on the news and immediately thought of you!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, we're becoming a magnet for weird nasty weather...

Most of the snow has melted, some still remains as it's been cold.

Ooo, pretty! Pretty harsh too i'd imagine!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
yup and rather tiring too.

[identity profile] abracah.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it was a fun snow....NOT!!! We got 7 inches here in my area. Lots of trees down and power outages. I didn't know the storm had a name.

Love the pic of the leaf!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the phone company guy told me that and I found it on the web too. Sounds like you got nailed as bad as we did. Yup, the leaf picture turned out nice :)

[identity profile] ladyniko.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty, but I certainly don't wish it on anyone - esp with the slow ass response you have from the power company.

At least you guys have a generator now, which is definitely a step up! :)
