Season 4 casting spoilers - who will be in command of Atlantis

They're totally changing the dynamic of SGA and it's not for the better. Read at your own peril.

Just a few quotes from the latest issue of SciFi magazine.

"...Amanda Tapping and her character, Col. Samantha Carter, who'll be taking over as the new leader now that the TV series SG1 is coming to an end."

Cooper said "It's about time she [Carter] got a command, and we had to keep that from happening to SG1 becuase we wanted her to be part of the team."

Bad news for Weir fans: "I can't make people feel better who just love Torri and Dr. Weir and want to see her on the show," sighs [Robert C] Cooper. "Unfortunately, that's just not going to happen. All I can say is that Sam Carter is a wonderful character, and Amanda Tapping is a wonderful actress, and i think she will fill the role on Atlantis admirably. I'm excited about seeing the evolution of her character. Brad and I created the character Dr. Weir and we love the character and torri, but the change needed to be made."

-----------------------------------

Why not just cancel Atlantis, and make the third series and put Carter in command? The people at Bridge seem obsessed with having Tapping in every project they do (SG1, SGA, Sanctuary, etc.) I have nothing against the actress, but the "change needed to be made" comment is just pure crap. The people who created the show didn't know how to write Weir, so, hey, let's bring over technobabble Carter from SG1 to take her slot. The article says what TPTB have been denying - that Carter IS going to be in command of Atlantis. Sucks. Sucks. Sucks.

WHY did the change need to be made? Do they explain that? Nope.

This is going to change the dynamic of the show. Weir is out, Carter is in charge, McKay will act like an idiot around her. God, I can only hope that Shep's team gets stranded offworld for most of the season just to avoid Atlantis.

This is just my kneejerk reaction from reading the article (posted over at http://ailurophile6.livejournal.com/29013.html)

You know, it almost makes you wonder WTF Amanda Tapping has over those guys that they're so determined to keep her employed. What is it about her that they are so freaking in love with?

And that was my first thought about their third series; got myself smacked over at GW for articulating it: When are they going to announce that Sam Carter is the main character? Why don't they just give up on EVERYTHING else and rename the franchise: The Sam Carter Universe?

*seethes*

I like Sam, too, which makes this that much more frustrating. She doesn't work in Atlantis, not without seriously retooling the show--and though they're saying they won't, I have no hope that they won't write McKay as the socially inept 14-year-old they tend to think he should be around her. And she trumps Shep in military matters now and... ARGH!

*seethes*

I think it's not AT, but the producers are just, I dont' know, enamored of AT so much thatit affects their logic??

Yeah, so Carter will outrank Sheppard, McKay will drool over her (God, please PLEASE let him get over that stage) and Carter will save the day.

My hope is that the transition of her taking over will NOT go over smoothly and there will be lots of clashes. Would at least make up for the stupid producers dumping Weir.

O'Neill was trouble for the higher ups and pretty much did his own thing. Maybe they will let Sheppard continue causing grief in the same manner, giving Carter a taste of what the SGC went through with her boss.

I could live with that...

I don't hold out any hope for that; their writing seems to be sexist enough, whether intentionally or not, that I expect everyone to fall over at her feet and be happy she's there to save them. They just don't seem to be able to write her as anything but their Geek Goddess and have all the characters around her worship her. Rodney was the only one who worked as a foil for her, and even that they ruined by making him crush on her.

I mean, they exiled Rodney to Siberia for daring to oppose her in SG1, and we were all supposed to feel like he deserved it. They can't do that now, but I really don't expect their underlying attitudes to have changed that much, if at all. Nope, she's the goddess and everyone else's characters will suffer accordingly.

Yeah, I think that sums it up. They'll deny it, but the way the producers drool over AT/SC, it's obvious.

I feel sorry for AT, as they optioned her contract and it's work, but I suspect lots of fans who liked Carter will soon dislike her because of what her character has done to SGA (booted out Weir, etc.)

I feel sorry for her, too, to a point.

What's more frustrating? They're doing this in part because they want the SG1 fans to follow her over. But the folks who weren't already fans aren't going to like Atlantis the way it is, so they'll make more changes until they really are just making "Atlantis: SG1"--and with their love of the snarky banter and comic relief role for McKay and Shep, look for elements of "Wormhole Extreme!" as well.

argh...

They don't seem to care about the pre-existing SGA fans, only the SG1 fans they want to entice over with Tapping. If they'd used their brains, they would have brought Michael Shanks over instead. He's got a huge fanbase. Gawd, I hope there's nothing like Wormhole X-terme on SGA. That was an AWFUL episode.

The odd thing is that if you look at online fandom, it's predominantly about the MEN on the SG shows, not the women. If you mention Stargate to somebody non-fannish, they invariably go "oh, MacGyver" but not once have I ever heard anybody go "Oh, the Amanda tapping series"? Nope, don't know where it comes from, but did notice that the PR people are pushing HER like crazy. They don't bother to mention the actual CAST of SGA. Sad.

Very true. I don't think Amanda has as many fans as they think. And those she does have are mostly Sam/Jack fans. They won't be happy with this move at all.

From reading posts over the years, many Carter fans are S/J fans. I don't see how S/J can occur if the two are in other galaxies. Heck, most bicoastal relationships fizzle. Bi-galaxy would be pretty much impossible, and besides, Jack is never gonna commit.

Hee. I want a copy of it--then I can blackmail them into bringing Carson back and getting back to the types of scripts they were writing season 1 when they had decent ratings.

I love Sam, but not on Atlantis.

You echo my thoughts exactly.

Something strange is definitely going on...the happenings at the Bridge smell rotten to me.

Yeah.
