‘Stargate Atlantis’ Ends Sci Fi First Run After Season 5

2-Hour TV-Movie Greenlit For 2009 As Stargate Franchise Lives On In Features

By Kent Gibbons -- Multichannel News, 8/20/2008 5:59:00 PM

Space drama Stargate Atlantis will conclude its run on Sci Fi Channel after the current, fifth season ends next January -- but the network has greenlit a two-hour Atlantis movie to run after that and says the show will live on as a network franchise.

After airing on Sci Fi sometime next year, the untitled Atlantis movie will be sold as a home-video title by producer MGM, Sci Fi told Multichannel News on Wednesday.

MGM this year released two financially successful straight-to-DVD movies made after progenitor series Stargate SG-1 ended a 10-year run of first-run cable episodes on Sci Fi. MGM and the show producers are scheduled to make more in DVDs in future. A movie franchise is also envisioned for Stargate Atlantis.

Meanwhile, we get a two-hour movie instead of 20 hours. I can't say I'm all that thrilled that Mallozzi and partner will pen the movie.

Sigh. This sucks. Feel free to rant in the comments section.

I think JM's been warning about this for a while on his journal. Not surprised, but meh, that's the television industry for you.

Oh great, more room for more Scare Tactics!

Boo those execs.

I'm extremely bummed. I'm so bummed that I don't know what I'm going to do about this. I'm thinking maybe massive doses of chocolate, then go curl up in the fetal position and whine. Maybe throw in some whimpers.

Stupid penny-pinching *expletives* at SciFi...

[identity profile] dragon-within.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that just sucks beyond all suckage!

[identity profile] bbluejenn117.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
bummed as I recently got into this show, but not really suprised, from what I've seen of the 4th season and 5th season I think if they tried to continue it they'd just be rehashing the same themes over and over, and to some point they've done that a little bit already, lets just hope the 5th season is the best yet

oh yeah your freaking ratings are UP and you canel it

I....

I don't know what to do with myself right now.

[identity profile] strange-magic.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's doesn't really surprise me. I mean to be honest, in my opinion, the show hasn't really been the same or as good since the Weir character left. It's unfortunate, but not so unexpected.

I also have to say that I read Joe's blog occasionally and all the hype we get about the episodes he writes have recently been turning out to be my least favorite episodes. Maybe it's just me *shrugs*. I'm not too thrilled about him being involved with the movie either. oh well.

I really want to hurt something right now.

Joe Mallozzi has confirmed the story. So sad, but not surprising.

Multichannel was enough for me. They're a very reputable trade paper.

NOOOOO!!!

[identity profile] comanche-rider.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck.

I...I feel sick. Literally. It's not entirely surprising, but...god, I need to go lie down...

Waaah. Not that I really expected any better, I still haven't forgiven SciFi for cancelling Farscape. But still. :(

[identity profile] toranoko.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
I would've been surprised if it had been renewed.

Still, expecting the end doesn't make it much easier when it's confirmed. :(

[identity profile] ancientcitadel.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
This definitely sucks!

[identity profile] k8t85.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so sad to hear this news. Like someone above said I'm also numb. I loved SGA and will savor the last of the eps this season.

[identity profile] kriadydragon.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
*Runs at execs with the giant scythe of doom* Gaaaaaaaaaaah!

On the other hand *sad sigh* it would have come eventually, anyway. Maybe sooner is better than later, considering how SG-1 being dragged out for another season didn't seem to do it any favors... or so I heard. Still, I personally would have liked one more season. So the movie sure as heck better make up for it *shakes fist*.

*Hugs SGA DVDs tightly to chest* at least I still have my preciousessssss.
