Phew. Apparently the Solutions blog is on top of this. Alas, i couldn't post till I got home from work.

The Vancouver Sun has a brief article on the tearing down of Stargate’s FX Stage to make way for the new television series Stargate Universe that will start filming in February next year. As the location of the popular Medieval Village Set, this stage has a lot of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis history tied up in it, and to see it being torn down to be rebuilt is bittersweet.

However, it still sucks that basically all you hear in the press is SGU SGU! Might as well get some cheerleaders to chant it. Hmmm, if "Heroes" keeps going down in the ratings, there may be one unemployed cheerleader! ;)

Got a reply back from the author of the article who, oddly enough, couldn't answer my question of 'are all the sets being destroyed?' Weird...

Update on what IS being destroyed (10/3) )

excerpt from Oct 2 2008 article

BRIDGE CONTRACT: Heavy machines are smashing the Stargate Atlantis TV series' set in Bridge Studios' 40,000-square-foot effects stage. That's the largest of eight movie-shooting facilities in almost constant use on the six-hectare complex at Boundary-off-Second Avenue, Burnaby. The studio's website claims it's the largest in North America.

But Bridge Studios general manager Ron Hryniuk -- say Her-nik -- isn't sorry to say goodbye to a show that produced some 100 episodes on six of his sound stages, as well as twice that number for the predecessor Stargate SG-1 series. That's because the SCI FI Channel and MGM Television recently announced the launch of a new "science faction" series called Stargate Universe.

"Its great news. Fantastic," Hryniuk said of a show that will premiere as a two-hour movie on SCI FI and become a weekly one-hour series next summer.

In a press release Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis co-creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper said Stargate Universe "will break new ground in relationships between mostly young and desperate explorers, thrust together and far from home."

**This sucks***

UPDATE: See next post - http://wraithfodder.livejournal.com/249781.html - for update. NOT all sets, PHew phew phew.

From David Hewlett's Twitter last night/early this morning...

Just wrapped 5 years of Atlantis...very sad. I have never worked with such a wonderful cast, crew and audience. Thank you and goodnight!

Sniff :(

Don't know if there will be anymore, but sure wish I knew who was videotaping and if they'll put it on YouTube.

Alas, I was not there. I was at my job, having brain cells melt from boredom. Now if I lived in Vancouver, I'd have called in sick and gone!

Anyway, found two reports so far that are, well, absolutely stupendous for coverage and photos (and David Hewlett and David Nykl fans will just die).

David Nykl posted on his blog about the cancellation of Stargate Atlantis:

Hard to believe - cancelled - after five years. Atlantis the series has been wrapped. It's all so sudden. Even when you know it can happen anytime, when it does you go: where did that come from? I barely have digested the news before the "what's next?" questions started up. What's next?
.
Well, frankly, I don't know. More work. More good roles. More ways to connect. I hope.
.
We move on..

UPDATED: */29 - David Nykl

I’ve been collecting the Stargate Atlantis actor’s various reactions to the cancellation news. Not all have spoken up (they’re not obligated to, and neither Joe nor Jason seem to be big computer users anyway).

Quotes and links beneath the cut )

Go to http://www.pcavote.com/pca/polls.jsp?utm_source=pcanewbuzz&utm_medium=email&utm_content=9500018 and vote! Yes, someone has put up a poll around SGA's cancellation (among other SG related polls). You may need to scroll through a page or three to fin dit.

“There's obviously a passionate audience for Atlantis and the characters of Atlantis,” Howe said. “And yes, they're absolutely going to continue in the movie franchise. But people need to mourn for a while and come to terms with it. I don't anticipate that that will subside quickly. But once Universe is on air and they have kind of their next fix of the Stargate franchise, I think hopefully people will realize that it's in safe hands at Sci Fi, that we really value this franchise and it's in our interest and the fans' interest to let us continue the story and figure out how to retell it for a new audience every few years.”

Yes, this remark about fans "needing a fix" came out of the mouth of Dave Howe, the president of the SciFi Channel. So, he thinks fans are, what? addicts? That we'll curl up into a fetal ball and croak if we don't get our weekly dose of Stargate? Hello? Sure, we're screaming bloody murder. A product many of us like was suddenly taken off the shelf and a new product with a "younger vibe" is going to replace it?

Stargate: 90210. Yes, it's finally happened. The fun Stargate Atlantis folk - Sheppard, McKay, etc. are getting deep-sixed for the "young and the deseprate". Gag me.

Atlantis has sunk, and the Wraith didn’t do it – Stargate Atlantis’ demise + where to write

I refrained from posting my feelings last night (too late to really think coherently), but left open the post (right before this one) for anyone who wants to vent and get it out of their system… So, here is my opinion of the mess.

You hit episode #100 and what do you get for it? Walking papers, it seems…

Yes, Stargate Atlantis fans will be hitting the liquor and chocolate ice cream tonight.

Multichannel reports that season 5 is the last season for Stargate Atlantis.

‘Stargate Atlantis’ Ends Sci Fi First Run After Season 5

2-Hour TV-Movie Greenlit For 2009 As Stargate Franchise Lives On In Features

By Kent Gibbons -- Multichannel News, 8/20/2008 5:59:00 PM

Space drama Stargate Atlantis will conclude its run on Sci Fi Channel after the current, fifth season ends next January -- but the network has greenlit a two-hour Atlantis movie to run after that and says the show will live on as a network franchise.

After airing on Sci Fi sometime next year, the untitled Atlantis movie will be sold as a home-video title by producer MGM, Sci Fi told Multichannel News on Wednesday.

MGM this year released two financially successful straight-to-DVD movies made after progenitor series Stargate SG-1 ended a 10-year run of first-run cable episodes on Sci Fi. MGM and the show producers are scheduled to make more in DVDs in future. A movie franchise is also envisioned for Stargate Atlantis.

Meanwhile, we get a two-hour movie instead of 20 hours. I can't say I'm all that thrilled that Mallozzi and partner will pen the movie.

Sigh. This sucks. Feel free to rant in the comments section.
