And another two join Stargate Universe, but hey, no women??

Again, under the cut in case you just don't care, plus size ;)

TV Guide reports:

The new Stargate's universe is expanding. On the heels of the announcement that Trainspotting's Robert Carlye will front the new Sci Fi Channel series (playing Dr. Nicholas Rush), TVGuide.com has learned exclusively that Justin Louis and Jamil Walker Smith have joined the nascent cast.

Louis (Hidden Hills) will play Colonel Everett Young, an experienced and married Stargate team leader, while Smith (Hey, Arnold!) will portray Sr. Sgt. Ronald Greer, a Marine with an explosive temper...and a mysterious past to account for it.

Justin Louis has a pretty extensive resume at http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0521878/

Jamil Walker Smith's resume is at http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0808607/

And they make the black guy the crazy one, sheesh...
see if he makes out any better than Rainbow.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh good grief, you're right... I think I want to hide when the tv critics start ripping that apart for stereotype...

[identity profile] alyssa22.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
I was about to say the same thing. The only thing they do with black characters is make them crazy or make them aliens. Way to stereotype a race.

[identity profile] tringasolitaria.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I thought the same - Really? Y'all made the black guy the psycho crazy one? :S

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just sorta disturbed on the whole 'can't control temper' thing...

[identity profile] tavabean.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
And the non-American is the machiavellian manipulative one. (Dr. Rush)
And the pudgy one is the geeky genius.
Any bets on what the women will look like?
I'm not sure if these announcements are making me cynical or what, cause they are all probably good actors.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not questioning the actor's abilities, just the writers' abilities to give us something worth tuning into. They're stereotyping the characters to a degree already, and I'm waiting for the blonde actress to be announced ;)
Edited 2009-01-16 03:32 (UTC)

[identity profile] miso-no-tsuki.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Blonde with boobs of course. I have commented on the fact that actresses are cast by cup size, apparently ...

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I do think the extras certainly are, judging by how some women practically spilled out of their tops! ;)

[identity profile] cat-77.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
So, if they're only casting males, are they accepting the slash upfront this time?

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Bwahahah! well, the show IS supposed to be 'edgier'. And I remember Mallozzi saying some stuff about gay characters in SGA, which never happened, so hey, brand new show, why not push the envelope and make a character gay? Wait, is that Greer's mysterious past??

Shhhh! I've already said we shouldn't clue them in that they're giving their young brats two daddies. Let's let it be a surprise. ;)

[identity profile] kimberweeme.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure these guys are fine actors, but neither makes me regret my decision so boycott the show. Good to know...

Justin Louis was fantastic in Durham County (Hugh Dillon's show...mmm, Canada), which makes me sad that he's aligning himself with SGU. Pays the bills, but not with my money.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
ION Channel bought Durham County to air in the US ... soon.

[identity profile] quiet-december.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Literally the first thing I thought when I read about the crazy guy with the temper was, "Please God don't let them cast a Black actor for this role."

Oh powers that be, why do you guys have to do this to us? Do you think we could maybe get a non-crazy Black scientist? Linguist? Archaeologist? Diplomat?

*crickets*

Uh, guys?

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
You might want to ask Mallozzi on his blog, but I doubt you'll get an answer.

[identity profile] mrwubbles.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm....they've already started slotting stereotypes so I approach this with the wariness you would Wyle E Coyote approaches an 'X marks the Spot'. LOL
nialla: (Teal'c)

[personal profile] nialla 2009-01-16 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
On the bright side, at least the first one is over 30. However, he was in a Highlander episode, so I had a brief "when fandoms collide" moment.

We're finally getting a regular who's married, but of course the spouse will not be there, so let's see how long for those vows to be broken as soon as TPTB have some alien priestess wanting to sex him up.

I think we can take a wild guess at what the women will look like. That's a no-brainer with these writers, and I mean that literally. There's only enough blood in the male body to run one head at a time. *g*

Black guy with an explosive temper? [facepalm] Teal'c does not approve of this bullshit.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Third episode? ;) Or he gets the divorce notice via email ;)

[personal profile] nialla 2009-01-16 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Or we'll learn that he and his wife were on the rocks anyway, due to his long periods away in the military. So it's much easier to show him seeking comfort from a woman on the crew and/or alien priestess.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure how they're going to handle that...

[identity profile] djlmarks.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
It is disturbing how people are typecast. Really disturbing. It's much more interesting when hot looking white guys are the psychos( or just maladjusted and a dishonerably dishcarged ala Shep)....As for the females that have yet to be cast, I highly doubt that they will be casting Whoopie Goldberg to play some wise, badly dressed alien again. I'd like to think they would do homage to Col. Samantha Carter or Dr. Elizabeth Weir. Very intelligent and business minded women...but then the 2o somethings and the Dorito advertisers might find that a tad boring and not good for business.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It's sort of par for the course. They're going with a formula. Toss in what they think will work as it has worked on other shows, and they don't want to stray too far from Stargate itself, but they want younger and edgier.. it's rather dismaying that they big shove is for four men, and not a single woman on the cast. Even CBS's The Unit promoted the actresses.

[identity profile] djlmarks.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
so is it decided that there will be no leading actresses?

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I have NO idea.

[identity profile] dejla.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Younger + edgier = stereotypically boring

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I hope not, but...my experience with 'edgier' TV has left me going 'bleh."

[identity profile] tavabean.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well, both Smiths (two Smiths!) are handsome guys and Blue is kinda cute, so I can see the thunk threads starting up pretty soon on Gatworld and the like.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm sure GW threads are probably up this morning...

[identity profile] these-dark-ages.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe they're... just going to have green alien maidens with no lines?

A marine with an explosive temper? Sounds like Ford(marine)/explosive temper(Ronon aka Chewie). How long before he gets replaced? ;)

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I wouldn't say Ford had an explosive temper... but who knows if they'll play cast roullette on this show, too.

[identity profile] these-dark-ages.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I meant Ford's the marine, and Ronon was the one with the "explosive temper".

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, okay. :)

[identity profile] suekay-87.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
Hehe...Gerald from Hey Arnold...lol!

Sorry...that's all I know Jamil Smith from!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
That was a cartoon, right? I remember reading he did some voice work.

[identity profile] suekay-87.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I was my favourite cartoon when I was a kid...used to watch it right after I got home from school :D

Do agree with everyone on the black guy being cast as the crazy one - it would have been better for that character to have been white and the geek or leader to be black.

But I'm determined to give the show a go.

[identity profile] faekitty71.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
One hopes its because they haven't casted them yet.

Male sci-fi writers don't seem to realize that woman do actually watch sci-fi.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
*Many* women watch scifi, and LOTS watched SGA.

[identity profile] faekitty71.livejournal.com 2009-01-19 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but sci-fi is still written by guys, who want dashing heroes and amazonian women.

[identity profile] mercury973.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, we all know they can't write for women, so maybe this is a good thing? (Still not watching. No McKay, no me watchee)

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Hate to say it, but you're right :(

[identity profile] ionaonie.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
So, to the SG PTB edgier equals cliche?

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Probably...

[identity profile] tashirasbubble.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Very cliche typecasting *shakes her head*

So Louis is the same age as Joe is - what happened to them replacing our "older" faces with hip younger ones!!!!

Can't comment on them as actors as I have never seen them before, but they are not, for me, "worth tuning in for" - if you get my drift ;) - SGU is becoming more and more of a turn off than a turn on for me the nearer it gets!

Sorry to whinge - I'm missing Shep and SGA already :-(

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
It would be nice if we got less PR on the show and some interviews with the cast giving us tidbits.

By I feel your whinging - I too miss SGA and in an hour, I'll realize, there's no reason to watch SciFi anymore..

[identity profile] jessica7070.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah.. it's been a sad friday night without SGA. I know I will watch SGU, but there's NO way it could compare to SGA. I'd like to here better actors (not that I don't like Carlyel,) but honestly until I get into the new show NOBODY will sound good because of the great cast SGA had.
