Well, as usual, bad news seems to come out at the Vancouver Stargate convention (first time was when we found out that Daniel Jackson was going to die, die, die). No wait, he's died more than that, but I digress.

http://www.airlockalpha.com/node/8428/mgm-brings-stargate-movie-franchise-to-an-end.html has a number of quotes from twitter ..."To quote a castmate: Finding out there will be no SGU, ['Stargate: Atlantis' and ['Stagate SG-1'] movie was 'like getting cancelled all over again," SGU star David Blue shared on Twitter Sunday afternoon. "I can't imagine not playing Eli. We all hoped a movie would allow us the chance to play together again. It was an amazing crew, cast and team."  ....Reports are that many of the cast and crew learned of the show's final fate Saturday, with Wright tasked to share the bad news with fans Sunday. The announcement seems to go beyond SGU, and include the rest of the television franchise as well.

http://www.gateworld.net/news/2011/04/wright-sgu-continuation-other-movies-dead-for-now/ has quotes from Brad Wright. “We just recently found out that the SGU movie is not going to happen,” Wright said during his stage panel today.  “It took too long.  We just couldn’t get it together in time, and the window has closed.  It’s actually sad for me, because after 17 years, I’m cleaning out my desk tomorrow morning.”

David Hewlett @ tweeted "Sounds like Brad's Stargate news not what people were hoping for...what's a snarkastic genius to do now?! #StargateWontDie"

http://josephmallozzi.wordpress.com/2011/04/17/april-17-2011-until-we-meet-again/ added his comments.

http://stargate-sg1-solutions.com/blog/2011/04/brad-wright-stargate-movies-wont-happen/ has the best rundown of all the quotes, etc. so definitely click on this link.

------

For some reason, this does not surprise me. The economy sucks, MGM is putting its eggs ($$$) into the Bond basket, and SGU just did not perform like they had hoped. I've watched the entire franchise - Atlantis is still my favorite with SG-1 *extremely* close. SGU never grabbed me like the first two incarnations, but I do watch it. I must admit the literal darkness of the series did turn me off, plus I wanted to really like a chararacter and it was tough. I do watch TV to escape reality, so don't want THAT much reality in my TV, unless it's news / documentary stuff.

A big thank you to all the cast and crew of the Stargate franchise. It's been quite a roller-coaster ride over the past, um, er, geez, seems forever! ;) The best part of being a fan has been meeting other fans, and making very good friends, plus meeting cast and crew. It's had its ups and downs, but I never whined just to do it, it was because I loved the franchise. I think a lot of fans can say the same.

Well, we fans will keep it alive in fanfiction, and let's hope the paperbacks keep going, and down the roads, maybe we will get a movie or two or three with our favorite characters..

P.S. If anybody sees any good links to reports from the con, please feel free to add to the comments section below :)

wraithfodder: (McKay-this is cool)

http://www.tvsquad.com/2011/04/04/david-hewlett-interview-stargate-universe/

excerpt:

Q: One more 'Stargate' question: McKay is a fan favorite. Why do you think fans connect with him so well?

A: I can't speak for the fans, but I can speak for me ... I think if I wasn't working on these shows I would be a fan of this stuff. I grew up watching 'Doctor Who' and buying all the books and the dolls and that kind of stuff. I love that stuff, so I feel like I'm paid to do what I would be paying to do! But for McKay, I always feel like there's a little bit of McKay in everybody. Everybody wants to be the guy who has the answers and who isn't afraid to admit that he's a genius, social niceties be damned! I mean I love science fiction because it takes me out of this world. And with McKay, he's the scientist who has spent his entire life reading about this stuff and now he's getting to live it. In a way that's what all of us want. We've done the reading, we've done the research, we've done the dreaming, and we want to be McKay -- we want to be the guy who saves the day because we know all this stuff. We want all this nerd-dom to pay off. And McKay is the resulting image, he's th
e iconic figure of the nerd who's done his homework and now he gets to go off and save the universe.

I couldn’t help but just shake my head and sigh when a tweet popped up about Stargate Universe being cancelled. I wasn’t really shocked, or surprised, well, maybe just a tad bit surprised because SGU had been SyFy’s golden child but then again, the way they shifted it on the timeslot, ignored advertising, etc. did not bode well.

So while SyFy ramped up the advertising for the new golden child, Being Human, SGU got the axe with the how-dumb-do-they-think-the-audience-is explanation of “we’re not making any more episodes.” CANCELLED! An esx-show! Dead as a doorknob, etc.

This reminds me soooo much of when Stargate Atlantis got the axe. However, SyFy seems to be refining how badly they do cancellations by letting some of the cast/crew find out via internet sources (Deadline.com and/or Twitter, etc.). At least the SGA cast got the notice on set (as a I recall) and didn’t MGM tell the SG1 cast ‘adios’ at the 200th episode party?? Pfft.

I don't go to Joe Mallozzi's blog too often, as I don't read cooking reviews, and he gives too many spoilers on books I might read, and well, since Stargate Atlantis and Stargate SG-1 went poof, not so much to read about, but today...

http://josephmallozzi.wordpress.com/2010/07/15/july-15-2010-atlantis-crossover-which-begs-all-sorts-of-questions-and-another-big-guest-blogger-announcement/  or just  http://bit.ly/auT1d5

EXCERPT: With word from producer John G. Lenic that the deals have been closed on those Atlantis alums, we can now move forward on the script, secure in the knowledge that both extra-special guest stars will actually be on hand to say the dialogue written for specifically for them.  Great news for fans of the old series.  There was a reluctance to move ahead with an SGA crossover, particularly on my part, because the feeling was it would step on the timing of the SGA movie, Stargate: Extinction, the events of which directly proceed the Atlantis series finale, Enemy at the Gate.  But given the delay on the movie front and the ideal premise pitched out by Remi Aubuchon and Brad Wright, it was decided to go ahead with the crossover.  Not a big deal, but it will require some changes to the Stargate: Extinction timeline which, in turn, will beg a host of questions, some of which will be answered in episode #15, some of which won’t…at least not right away:

1. Where the hell is Atlantis?

AND the rest is at link above. I'm assuming from everything I've read that this is Stargate Universe/Atlantis crossover, so it begs the question of whom they'll have. I'd love to see Sheppard and McKay, but don't see how that could be worked in logically. Hmm...

Showing off the vast fabric of the Stargate universe, cast members from both Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis will make appearances in the second season of SGU.

That’s the word from our friends at SCI FI PI, the Web site for Australia’s SCI FI broadcast network, which was in Vancouver last week for an international press junket on the show’s set.

My opinion? It doesn't surprise me that they're using Stargate SG-1 characters. Daniel Jackson is smarter than most of the folks on Destiny so could always a help. Carter? I think the scientist in her would like to see the Destiny so she'd go... Teal'c? There's absolutely no reason for him to go, and he'd probably need therapy if he ended in Eli's body ;) Jack makes the most sense (everybody reporting back to him). Mitchell? He' s a pilot, so, er, why go?

As for Atlantis... and I see this, quite honestly, as a way to draw back all the Atlantis fans who quit the franchise (if you comment, please refrain from bad language, thx) . Let's see, Sheppard? Pilot, why go? McKay? Been through body swap, would probably rather eat a lemon than do it again. Teyla, no need, Ronon (same scenario as Teal'c) ;). Zelenka? Hmm...

But of course lots of folks could stay Earth-side as nobody is going to lose the dumb stones anytime soon. My guess is the guest star will be like 2-3 minutes max, although they'll promote the heck out of it. Call me cycnical, but I've watched SyFy too long ;)

But first, a new official photo of Jason Momoa from the Conan movie at http://www.bscreview.com/2010/06/conan-a-wrap-and-momoa-as-conan-pic/. It's at several other sites too, including the main studio site http://nuboyanafilm.com/news/read/234. Bigger photo at those links.

Official PR photo

Although I"m not into barbarian sword-and-sorcery type flicks, I will check out the Conan movie to see Jason. I mean, it was a hoot to see David Hewlett up on the big screen in SPLICE. Now to see Joe Flanigan on the big screen, and Rachel Luttrell. Heck, I want to see her on the small screen too!

...................Then today the site Fancast - http://bit.ly/ad4nnv - reported that Richard Dean Anderson, who had retired from acting, has un-retired and will be doing a recurring role or something similar on the USA Network series Facing Kate. A quote..."Anderson’s ‘Facing Kate’ role is that of David Smith, a charismatic but secretive man who enters Kate’s life shortly after the death of her father. In short order, it is revealed that David has deeper connections to the Reed family." More at link above. It'll be interesting to see how it fares with RDA on it, but then USA has been putting out some pretty decent fare.

.............................Last, Joe Mallozzi reports on his blog at http://josephmallozzi.wordpress.com/2010/06/19/june-19-2010-the-farewell-tour-back-on-top-janinas-new-music-vid/ that Robert C Cooper is departing Stargate Universe. It's been hashed about on various blogs, live journals, etc. To me, it's not much of a surprise as most people do not last that long on a series. They move on to keep the creative juices flowing. I'm not sure how it will impact SGU, but since the show is in the "eh, it's okay and I'll keep watching in hopes it will get better", it doesn't bother me much. However, I can't help but think, wow, why couldn't he have scripted "Vegas" before season 5, to open the doors, so to speak, on good AU stuff like that. Oh well.

The mere mention of any variety of mental illness makes most people squirm, but depression is the one that proves impossible to understand unless you've witnessed -- or, God forbid, experienced -- its debilitating effects first-hand.

Three local companies receive NEA grants to help kids brush up on their Shakespeare

Remember those long afternoons in English class, plowing through "Macbeth"?

Well, Shakespeare is meant to be seen and heard, not read--which is why the National Endowment for the Arts created Shakespeare for a New Generation, a grant program designed to help theaters bring the Bard to life for middle and high school students.

Stargate Universe screening at Planet Hollywood, New York, October 2, 2009

The backstory:

SyFy held a special screening of Stargate Universe in which 15 lucky fans who entered the week-long contest at SyFy got to see it. It was limited to New York folk only. I read that and tweeted “well, that sucks” (since I can hop a train in to the city). Next thing you know, I’m on the list to see it. Sweet! I mean, it’s the experience more than anything, plus a chance to meet Lou Diamond Phillips and Ming-na, both of whom I’ve watched on TV, etc. for years. Heck, cant’ see to get to cons but this was just as good in some respects.

Hmm.... I dare say I do believe my LJ will always be focused on Stargate Atlantis, since the characters just caught my imagination and heart. THe writing wasn't always the best, but Flanigan and Hewlett and the rest made me tune in no matter what.

Anyway, Futon Critic just did a review of Stargate Universe, and it voiced a lot of my...c oncerns? fears? For spoilerphobes, don't click on the cut, otherwise proceed...

My post before this was about new shows on network, as i poked through the TV Guide. I neglected returning shows and other channels.

Returning shows. I'll watch the CSIs, although Miami is an, 'eh' cuz I think something else will be against it. Oh yeah. DURHAM COUNTY. Hugh Dillon vs. David Caruso. Sorry, Dave...

Ah, smacks self with dead trout. I will continue watching BIG BANG THEORY, but wish they'd left it on earlier in the evening. The guys are coming back from the North Pole. This should be fun.

NCIS. Of course! :)

Damn, can't remember what else is on. Yeah, TV is that exciting. Maybe they'll do a series 2 of MONSTERS INSIDE ME about parasites. That was fun. Really, it was. very interesting, although you'd never want to step outside your door again after watching it ;)

The fall TV Guide arrived today, and at first I thought, a clothing catalog, as well, it's just so, gah, BLAND! I mean, it reminds me of what they did to the local supermarket's flyer that falls out of the newspaper.

Anyway, it's just pale, and again, all the photos are basically the same, so the spread for "Melrose Place" doesn't seem much different for ABC's remake of "V", which I totally missed the first time as really, where are the lizards, the aliens? Why is everyone standing around a swimming pool in formal wear???

I yawn as I flip past vampire shows. We're going to be buried in them. Yes, bad pun ;)

Under the cut for length. So far, just on Stargate Universe, unless something pops up on Stargate SG-1 or Stargate Atlantis (we can always hope!) Yes, and Michael Shanks (BURN NOTICE panel!)

Not a lot today, but then the con really hasn’t gotten started and people load stuff to the web as time permits.

I'll stick it all under the link for size and in case you're not into Stargate Universe...

Got a question for your favorite Syfy star? Post it in the comments section below and we'll ask as many as we can at Comic-Con International later this week. You'll be able to watch the answers in coming weeks in our exclusive video of the panels right here on SCI FI Wire.

Post a general question or one aimed at a particular cast member of the Syfy series Stargate Universe, Caprica/Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, Eureka, Warehouse 13 or Sanctuary. You can view our Comic-Con schedule and a list of the stars who will be in attendance below. (Please address your questions only to the actors, not the writers or producers.)

I've noticed some folks are busy asking Brad Wright about a Stargate Atlantis movie. Can't hurt to be polite and say "Hey, where is it?" :)

Nothing much to report here except - I mowed the lawn. Yes, my big accomplishment. I was there going 'mow lawn? paint house?' gah! Trouble is we've had ten days straight of rain so the lawn was tall, and although I have to paint house, I also had to mow lawn, so I mowed lawn. Despite the day being dry, the grass was still wet. My one hand is still green-black sorta from constantly unclogging bottom of lawnmower.

Meanwhile, I'm still destroying brain cells by watching Lou Diamond Phillips in NBC's game show I'm a Celebrity. I don't think I'll be watching any more game shows unless I'm sick or an actor I really like is in one. Luckily I saved some brain cells (snort) by continuing my Kung Fu: The Legend Continues marathon. Just finished the first season. My god, the ads are hysterical, cuz they're from '94 or so and well, the hairstyles, etc. Plus, one ad for Nintendo(?) going on about the mega "64 bits!" of memory. Bwahahahah! And you could get a fully loaded premium car for just $15K. Ah, should have bought a car then. No, wait, I already had (a few years before - and still have it. Duct tape, I love you.)

So, off to work and gray rainy day. Not the time to give up coffee. Don't think green tea packs the caffeine like coffee but I decided I didn't care for coffee much anymore and I had this green tea I should drink up.

Yes, I'm watching a reality show, cuz there's nothing new on, I'm paying bills, and decided to see Lou Diamond Phillips on NBC's "I'm a Celebrity.. Get Me Out of Here!" I only hope he wins as he seems to be the most level-headed of the crew. I must admit, if I were there, Heidi and Spencer would be shoved into a lake filled with hungry reptiles. Argh. I'm blind! Good lord, did Stephen Baldwin fall asleep and get attacked by graffiti artists? Anyway, alas, they can't do away with celebrities, although I sure as heck can't see this show doing any good for the aforementioned idiots (Heidi and Spencer). Hm, perhaps having done several campy/crappy flicks for SciFi Channel has steeled LDP or this nonsense. Plus he looks like he's the only one in pretty decent shape.

Meanwhile, I'm still working on my Stargate Atlantis Fan Fic Recommendations page, cuz I was woefully behind, by, er, oh, all of 2009. Plus i printed out some and said "gotta read!" And I've discovered a bunch of bookmarks on two different PCs, plus links/self-contained stories off the SGAHC Yahoo group - and if you're a whumper, you had definitely better be on that list!  But that will take forever but I want to at least get it in better shape before sending it off. And then figure out how to send it since it's now a 30+ page WORD document.

Lastly, you must visit this site - http://opentravel.com/blogs/ten-most-unreal-landscapes-on-earth/ - which has very cool photos. I love the 'gate to hell' - I mean, looking at these photos makes me think about writing SGA whump fanfic!

There's a small mention (done humorously) of Stargate Atlantis, but it's mostly Stargate Universe but it is amusing nevertheless.

http://www.hdfilms.com/2009/05/12/the-jace-hall-show-visits-stargate-watch-the-promo/ had a small mention about the upcoming Stargate segment on the JACE HALL SHOW... (May 12th)

I was actually impressed that Jace was able to work with MGM for months to get us in to see AND FILM with the actual Stargate. While we were there, Chris Judge was insane enough to play along and do a bit for our show. You should now that we actually don’t necessarily plan our shoots or write them in advance and this little piece promo is actually all improved by the three of us.
