Joe Flanigan at Vancouver Creation Con (April)

I really like Joe Flanigan. Really, I do. But. But... $500 (opening bid) for cocktails with him? And this isn't you and him, it's you and other fans, so if one is really obsessive, you've paid $500 to be a doormat...

From an email

Starting at $500 and you can put it on a payment plan! But hey, you get *snacks*. The whole ala carte pricing of this con would kill me. I mean the gold ticket is something like $500, then if you want set tours, more, and photo ops, and autographs and well, best wishes to those who can afford this. I only would hope they'd post about it on the web for the rest of us to live vicariously through them...

Well, just to point out the autographs and the set tour are included in the price but yeah at least last year they had twice the amount of guests. Shouldn't be complaining cause I'm going to it but yeah I know why people call it Cretin.

Well, unless you live in vancouver, there's passport fee (if you don't have one), airfare, hotel... I think if you did whole schmeer you could easily hit $2K US.

Since you're going, can I beg/plead/etc for a nice big huge con report, at least on the Joe part???

Yeah, I guess if I didn't live so close I probably wouldn't be going. I live in Alberta so its not that far, I mean if I really wanted I could drive but a 15 hour car ride doesn't appeal to me.

Of course they never have decent cons in my neck of the woods, save the NY Comic Con.

Shore Leave is a convention just north of Baltimore. It's always the first full weekend after the Fourth of July.

For Stargate, Shore Leave has Jason Momoa, Rachel Luttrell, Robert Picardo, Christopher Heyerdahl and Michael Welch. Other guests are Ethan Phillips (Star Trek Voyager), Kevin Sorbo (Hercules, Andromeda), Adrienne Wilkinson (Xena, Star Wars) and Jasika Nicole (Fringe).

Jason Momoa, Rachel Luttrell, Robert Picardo, and Ethan Phillips will sign one item for no additional charge during the Official Autograph Sessions on Saturday and Sunday.

Ah, would love to get to that one!

Last year was FABULOUS and I could not recommend it enough. The only drawback was waiting in line to get photo op pictures was in a narrow hallway with not much ventilation, but the guests I ended up getting pictures with (David and Kate Hewlett and Jewel Staite) were so gracious that it was completely, utterly worth it.

*waves to darsynia and watcher* Shore Leave was awesome(yeah...I know...David's most unfavorite word) But, for me it had to do with the fantastic people I met and David and Kate who were uber gracious and wonderful to the fans!

I would love to go again this year....but as I'm bending over for Cretin con... *sigh* and am going to Dragoncon, I am broke for any other cons this year.

I HATE Cretin con too. The only reason I'm spending the money is because I want the set tour and they are having Joe, Amanda and Paul who (with David) are my favorite of the SG peeps. I love the rest too....just slightly less. *grins*

It just ticks me off every time they send one of these ebay things and sell a tiny bit of time with one of the actors and 8 other people for $500+. It's now up to $610 btw. *shakes head*

Seriously...it would be nice to know how much the actors get paid to go to a con. If I won the lottery I would start my own dang con and it would be fan run and fan oriented.

Thanks for your post Wraithfodder! It was what most of us are thinking!

I mean if I didn't have bills and responsibilities, etc. and had more money, sure I"d love to do this con but well, reality takes precedence. Don't think the tax collector would go "well, we're sorry you blew what you owe us on a con, but you OWE us." ;)

Re: Conventions

[identity profile] kdvb1.livejournal.com 2009-03-27 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It really is a ridiculously expensive con. I got a deal on airfare for $398. I'm in Florida and usually it's $550 for cheap airfare to Vancouver. I didn't get the least expensive hotel room as I booked late so I think it will be $707 when converted to US...but I'm spitting that.

And, the tickets are fricking ridiculous at $569 for gold and $499 for preferred.

So just for tickets, hotel and airfare you are talking $1321.00!!! Compare that to $614.00 for tickets, hotel and air for DragonCon.

*sigh* Yeah...Cretin sucks. And, I'm so bending over for them... *evil grin*

BTW...Amanda's little get together went for $901.50 a person!!! Whoa!

I really, really like Joe, but heck, I couldn't justify spending $1K for, what? maybe an hour, along with 8 other folk I probably wouldn't know. I mean, would have been cheaper to bid on a set visit from the sounds of it! ;)

Re: Conventions

[identity profile] kdvb1.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah...you can actually just buy the set tour for $279 and not go to the con. I really thought hard about doing that. But, since I'm soooooo far away and was going to spend SO much dang money getting there and staying there, I figured what the heck...spend the wad and do the con too...LOL.

Re: Conventions

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I meant in ye olden days when SGA was airing,a set tour would go for several thousand, and by the time you're eBayed to death by Creation, it might add up to the same amount ;)

If I had the cash, time, etc. etc. I'd have done the con.

Re: Conventions

[identity profile] kdvb1.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
That's a lot! It's good then that they sell the set tours separate now.

If you don't live far, just going for a $279 set tour wouldn't break the bank.

I am looking forward to the con though....I've never been to Vancouver, or seen any of the actors except David Nykl *squishes David Nykl* and I'm going with some wonderful friends. So even if Cretin tries to nickel and dime every cent out of everyone's pockets, I'll have my buds and we will have a good time.

I want a good deal for what I pay....so I'm trying to get over my aggravation with Cretin's high ticket prices. *sigh*

Sorry that link didn't work...try this one:

You have to scroll down a bit and then you see Amanda's pic to the left and you can click on bidders list.

Of Course :) I'm even sitting fairly close to the stage so you might get some nice pictures :D

Your welcome :)

[identity profile] anjak-j.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
All told, I probably spent about £1500 last year going to that con, including airfare from the UK, my share of the hotel room for the week, the con ticket, extras (not many) and eating.

I spent less when I went to New York to see the Yankees, even though the ticket to that game cost more than the con ticket did and I came back with twice as much luggage as I arrived in the US with.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
See much else while in NYC?

[identity profile] anjak-j.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, went on a boat ride out to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, which was cool. Went up to the top of the Empire State Building. That was fantastic - great views. Went on one of those open-top bus tours around the downtown area. Plus I stayed in Brooklyn - I actually liked staying outside of Manhattan, but I can understand why some people prefer to stay there.

And best of all, I met one of my long-time online friends...

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Glad you got to see those sites. I just got to see Statue of Liberty etc this past year when a friend came to town, otherwise, hadn't gotten the chance!

[identity profile] anjak-j.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I really enjoyed it and I hope to come over again at some point. I'd like to catch a game at the new stadium and there are a few other things I'd like to see. My mother has been going on about a trip later this year because she's never been.

I'd actually like to see more of the state as well as just the city. And of course, get up to Cooperstown...

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Cool
