Jewel Staite talks about season 4 of Stargate Atlantis

Jewel Staite has put up an entry on her blog about season 4 of Stargate Atlantis and the Beckett situation. I don't think there's anything too spoilerish as long as you know what's going on casting-wise, otherwise, don't read

Jewel Staite blog entry

Interesting. She said "leaving the show." Didn't Paul just say that he was going from a regular to a not-regular?

Damn.

Damn. I hate her use of smary pants prodigy. That does not bode well. Sigh.

Believe that's what N John Smith said... Come to think of it, I don't think Paul has made any definitive statement about the whole situation.

Yeah, the "leaving the show" part was what really caught my eye.

Damn, indeed.

And damn again on the "smartypants" doctor idea. I'm not surprised she took the job, but I really think the deck is stacked against her character's success at this point. Or maybe that should be I really "hope" the deck is stacked...?

/sigh/

We'll just have to see. I just don't have that much faith in the writers. I mean, if they felt they couldn't do anything with Beckett, why should they do any better with a new character?

which I, in turn, got from the [livejournal.com profile] sga_noticeboard. But you're welcome. ;-)

Goodness. Doesn't bode well for me, either! I heard Dr. Beckett also isn't "leaving" forever, and Jewel Staite isn't replacing him! They said he'd just be leaving for a short while...thanks for posting that though. :(
I guess we will have to just wait and see what happens.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2006-12-12 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, it is, alas, a matter of wait and see with Beckett and season 4.

I have to confess that I'm fairly new to the Stargate fandom, so I don't remember the reaction to Corin Nemec's replacing Michael Shanks. But Jonas certainly didn't fare very well, did he. I think Jewel Staite has an uphill battle ahead of her.

[identity profile] seratonation.livejournal.com 2006-12-12 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
yeah whats this about Paul leaving? I heard he was going to "go missing" in the end of S3 (no spoilers please, I'm only up to The Return pt1) and then he'll come back in S4, which was great! I mean, I don't like carson as much as I like the Team, but the show just wouldn't be the same with out him, and come on, not replacing him? One genius doctor leaves, another genius doctor joins the show... (younger, prettier, female... what does that tell you?)

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2006-12-12 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
WEll, can't spoil on what happens to Beckett as even I don't know! N. John Smith said they weren't killing him off (perhaps they don't want to incur the wrath of the fans?) but I have no idea why they're doing what they've, well, done. Yeah, replacing one doctor with another makes no sense. Sigh.

I like Jewel Staite very much, and agree that they've screwed around with Beckett too much, but...yeah. This keeps sound like a worse idea.

The problem is that Carson/Paulie is still the one character with any real warmth or humanity on a consistent basis. I find the other leads enjoyable to watch, but they generally don't have the kind of human feel the leads did on SG1. But lots of us have been wibbling over this since they first said Paul'd be leaving. I'm clinging onto the "nothing's forever in sci-fi" statement. The problem is that this puts even more pressure on Jewel, and it's not even her fault. If they don't make her character nice and approachable, she's screwed through no fault of her own.

Right now, my biggest concern is the prodigy angle. It doesn't work in sci-fi. No matter the skill of the actor, they just end up being irritating as hell. Welsey Crusher, anyone? *facepalm*

Unfortunatley any actor who takes a job where another character used to be will always be met with some kind of resistance. Some fans can be totally whacko about it (fortunately, it's only a handful, but they do tend to be vocal) while the rest voice concern. I've seen this sort of thing in various fandoms over the years, for decades, in fact!
