SciFiwire: Why Michael Shanks thinks Stargate SG-1 is history

Here's today's article...

SciFiwire: Why Michael Shanks thinks Stargate SG-1 is history

It looks like Stargate SG-1 may finally be dead, at least according to star Michael Shanks, who played Dr. Daniel Jackson on the series, which ran for 10 seasons and spurred two DVD movies in 2008 and two Syfy spinoff series.

"Given the amount of time lag that's gone on between us doing the movies, I suspect that we might be very far away from, if ever, doing another DVD movie. This might be the closing of the book on that particular [chapter of the] franchise," said Shanks, whom we caught up with while he was promoting his guest-starring role as Hawkman in The CW's two-hour film Smallville: Absolute Justice.

.....................

"Never say never. It's always a possibility. But I think everybody's moving on to a certain point, and with the new show doing well, everybody's focusing their attention on that. The SG-1 idea is somewhat on the back burner, which is a little bit unfortunate, because I think one more story would have been a great way to bring Rick (Richard Dean Anderson) back in and really go there. But you know, business is business."

......

"The reason why I did that was because it timed in perfectly, because pilot season is underway. I'm reading for Danno in Hawaii Five-O," he said with a laugh. "I don't know what to say about that. I haven't read the script yet, so I'm going, 'Really?' I'll have to wait and see.'"

If cast, Shanks would be appearing with Lost's Daniel Dae Kim, who'll be portraying Detective Chin Ho Kelly, a role played in the original series by Kam Fong, the Hollywood Reporter announced today.

While he doesn't have any information about how they will reboot the iconic police procedural, which ran on CBS from 1968 to 1980 and spurred the famous catch phrase, "Book 'em, Danno," Shanks knows one thing. "I'm sure there's some updates, because I don't think we could pull off that kind of brow furrowing with a straight face in this day and age. I'll tell you one thing, to go to Hawaii to shoot a series would be a dream come true, that's for certain. Not a bad gig there. ... I don't feel too bad for the people on Lost. Oh, you're on Lost. Poor guys. Yeah. Boo-hoo. Go back to your cabana and have another mojito [laughs]."

Alas, I think Michael is right. MGM doesn't seem interested in either SG-1 or Atlantis. Stargate Universe is the new toy, MGM isn't as rich as it once was.Sure, the scripts are written for both movies, but gazillions of scripts get written. The actors know zip about any movies and are, realistically, moving on with new projects. Don't hate me for saying this, but by the time MGM does decide to do another SG-1 movie, O'Neill's gonna need a walker to chase after Goa'uld! ;) And on the Atlantis side (my favorite side, I must admit), Momoa is doing the Conan movie and if that takes off....

And then there are the books. Six planned, that I've read of, which will cover the year after Atlantis returned in the series finale. Of course, novelizations aren't cannon but it doesn't sound like MGM is chomping at the bit to do a movie.

As for Shanks in Hawaii Five-O? Wel, Moonlight's Alex O'Loughlin is up for the McGarrett role (I still can't see anybody but Jack Lord in that role, but oh well, remakes again). I'd love to see Michael in another series, and a cop drama? Sounds good. Fingers crossed!

Hawaii Five-0?

Ha. Everything old is new again. Would be interesting to see how they remade that. I barely remember it the first time around. Or maybe I was seeing reruns...

I had such a crush on Dann-O when that show was on ;)

Shanks and O'Loughlin?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Interesting, but I do agree about future of SG1 and
SGA and cast of both best move on..........MGM put their
foot in it, and it looks like cement

I've been assuming both shows are dead for quite a while. So many of the actors said they're not hearing much, if anything, about the DVD movies, so I figured it was unlikely they're ever going to happen. I think David Hewlett was only half-joking about buying stuff from the props sale to make their own show. ;)

If MGM ever did pony up the dough later on, there's more risk of one or most cast members unable to take the job due to other work commitments. That would make their fan groups unhappy at a minimum, but it could also mean some really warped storytelling to explain why their character isn't there.

I think MGM put all of their eggs in the SGU basket. Possibly a better idea financially to get sure money out of Skiffy for a weekly series than risk a one-shot direct-to-DVD release on their own. It might get shown on Skiffy or elsewhere later, but they probably wouldn't get nearly as much money.

I nearly died laughing on your last comment.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, it was all about money and I don't think MGM could do SGU *and* the movies, so... alas :(

My husband and I were just talking the other day about if they were going to make another movie. I have my doubts.

Btw, did you get my reply message about my creatures?
Also there are some new ones that I finished recently.

It's always about the money. Especially if it's money already in the bank from Skiffy, versus expending their own money at a much greater risk.

I'm still undecided about the Five-O revival. I know I watched it the first time around, but I was too young to really remember it and have an attachment to it.

The real problem is the percentage of good revivals versus Guaranteed Suckage is pretty slim.

very sad... but your avatar rocks!!!!

I would like to see Joe Flanigan play Steve McGarrett! He can hang out in Hawaii and surf while he's acting. Not a bad gig for him and I don't think he would mind taking the family either! I wish he would start looking for a new series!

When the cast starts saying it's dead, it's dead. I'm not exactly convinced that SGU is doing 'well' though. lol

I am sorry that the last we'll see of O'Neill is the rather warped version of his character that's appeared in SGU. Seems a sad ending for such an iconic character.

"Well" as defined by Skiffy doesn't translate to our earth logic.

I think the fact that TPTB have had public fits about negative comments from an actual TV reviewer, then later gone to the fans to solicit feedback for next season says a lot about how "well" they're doing. But they've only shown half a season, so next season may be too late for any improvements, if they have any real intentions of using the suggestions.

I didn't watch O'Neill or Daniel in SGU. I'd rather remember them in better times.

*sigh* pretty much what we've all been thinking then.

"This might be the closing of the book on that particular [chapter of the] franchise"
I like how they added in the "chapter of the" for him there. Somehow i get the feeling his original words were more apt...

But Michael as Danno? Oh hell yeah! :D

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
He may be looking for a series, but wants something good, not dreck that will get cancelled two episodes in, or film in Vancouver.

I get the feeling the Hawaii Five-O retread will be darker than the original.

[identity profile] timespirt.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Well there are quite a few things that are coming around for new series. I even thought The Questor Tapes would be a good fit for him and maybe David H as well? JF as the android and DH as his builder scientist. Don't know if you remember the Roddenberry movie of the same name with Robert Foxworth as the android and the guy that played BJ on Mash as the builder scientist. The go ahead was given for it to be made into a series.

Joe as Jack Lord?

[identity profile] watcher652.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Joe Flanigan would be better cast as Magnum, P.I. Smart remarks, fast cars, and a lot of running around. ;^)

Oh yes, definitely, but hmm, no moustache. Sorry, Tom Selleck did it fine but I'd rather have my Joe Flanigan clean-shaven, or a little scruffy once in a while ;)

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, I watched the Questor Tapes when it originally aired (yes, I'm from the Jurassic period) ;) I'd love to see Joe and David in another scifi series...

[identity profile] cimmerdeux.livejournal.com 2010-02-10 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Got to Joe on Burn Notice; it's like some sort of magic talisman or something for a lot of actors I like but don't usually get to see a lot of like Bruce Campbell and Sharon Gless. Lucy Lawless was on Burn Notice and Anthony Starke (love him from Mag 7) and Michael and Tim Matheson is back; and the thing is, they often get to play against 'type' and seem to have a good time. I was actually Michael could be more of a recurring character but he was fun while he lasted, I'd be happy to see Joe do a short stint as well. Wouldn't mind seeing Joe on Supernatural either since they're apparently going for a Season 6. (A bad move I'm thinking but that's just me, where do you go from the Apocalypse?)

[identity profile] cimmerdeux.livejournal.com 2010-02-10 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently I'm having trouble with verbs today. lol

I can see him playing either part. He can pull off the McGarrett part and the Magnum part too! At this point I don't care as long as he gets back to a series we can see him weekly and also where he will be treated better than he was with TPTB, MGM and SiFi!

[identity profile] timespirt.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Rockford Files is cool too, but NBC has the worst track record for TV series in the world and they also own SiFi too!

I would rather see them in a SciFi series as well, but I'll take what I can get at this point!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
THeir knight rider remake SUCKED big time, but David Shore did the script for RF pilot, so we can hope...

[identity profile] timespirt.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
NBC seems to low ball everything to save money so quality goes out the window. The original Knight Rider at least spent the money and lasted like 4 seasons. The remake was just trash. I couldn't even get through the 2 hour pilot it was so bad!
