Photo found on web: starry night in Afghanistan

I snerched this photo from a big photospread at http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/06/afghanistan_june_2010.html in a spread on Afghanistan. It's incredible that such beauty can be found in a country that has so many problems. You can view the full size at link above. It's the 15th photo.

I love photography so seeing this made me excited. What a stunning photo! And you're right, so often we see absolute beauty contrasting with landscapes that have suffered and continue to suffer strife and carnage. I love the stars...back home (when I'm not at school) you can see the stars really clearly out in the country, away from the city lights. The sky looks nothing like this, but a nice reminder of home nonetheless :)

Thanks for sharing!

Unfortunately we have far too much light pollution here. best sky I've ever seen was in between California and Nevada.

It's just so beautiful... wish I could see stars like that where I live.

Yeah, we have so much light pollution it sucks. whenever we have a huge blackout (every decade or so) I just go outside and marvel at the sky I can now see.

Yeah. there are a few areas of the UK where you are far enough away from street lights and cities/towns to get to see the heavens. Wales and Salisbury begin two places.. its so breathtaking and the sky feels like it's right up close to you but also far away.. and of course you get the shooting stars..

you can lie out on a tarp and just look up..

i wish my camera was good enough to get a decent photo:/..

it really puts you back into existence.

Amazing! Still, what are those guys fighting for over there? I can't recall anything that makes sense.
Anyway, true beauty usually comes in most unexpected places.

Afghanistan Sky at Night

Thanks for sharing an incredible photo. I was at Camp Chagchagaran Afghanistan, in the Fall of 2005. I had never imagined a sky so brilliant and beautiful. It was even more majestic that the Northern Lights I saw inside the Arctic Circle years ago.

I just held my breath and said a prayer of Thanksgiving that I was fortunate enough to see God's painting so close it looked like you could reach out and touch them. People who have never seen a sky like this will never fully appreciate this perfect, quiet beauty.

I did not get any photos to share with friends and family; this will do just fine.

Best regards
