Michael Shanks and Stargate Universe

Hmm, now this 'stuntcasting' would draw in a LOT of SG1 fans....

SciFi Wire posted today... MICHAEL SHANKS HAS A SURPRISE ABOUT STARGATE UNIVERSE

"I talked to [executive producer] Brad Wright a couple of weeks ago, and he asked me if I'd be interested in doing a cameo in the Universe pilot, and I of course said I would be," Shanks said in an exclusive interview. "And there's a great deal of talk about [it]. ... They've got a script going and everything like that."

Shanks added that he hasn't put Dr. Jackson away completely yet. "There will be a Stargate SG-1 movie [for DVD], probably filmed around the same time the [Stargate] Atlantis movie is filmed this coming summer," he added. "So that's all going to be going on."

Shanks played Jackson on and off for a decade in Stargate SG-1, as well as on the spinoff series Stargate Atlantis and in the made-for-DVD movies The Ark of Truth and Continuum.

The next SG-1 movie, "as far as I know, is pretty Rick-heavy [as in Richard Dean Anderson], pretty O'Neill [Anderson]-heavy," Shanks said. "So I don't know much more than that, but I will most definitely be involved in it."  ....

Shanks explained that it's the ideal situation to be able to stay in the Stargate game without being tied to it as an everyday job. "It's great," he said. "After 10 years and getting not picked up or canceled or whatever you want to call it, it feels almost a little bit odd, because you're so used to the process. But going away from it, it's great to be able to explore other opportunities. When you're doing a show for nine months a year, you always want to shake it up and do other things, but you don't have the time. Now, it's the best of both worlds. We can get on with it and have other experiences and still revisit the franchise and the great family environment that we have with the cast and crew. 'The further adventures of ...' is a nice treat."

Quite honestly I figured they'd have approached Amanda Tapping first ;)

I think there's a rights issue in using Sam or Teal'c to launch a new series. That's why they weren't in the SGA pilot.

Ah...

[identity profile] gatedialer.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Here's hoping that they will get those movies to us!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, not to mention the SGA movie for us SGA fans...

[identity profile] gatedialer.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
No kidding.I honestly could not watch most of the fifth season because I was so pissed off that the show was canceled. I miss both shows. After BSG on Friday they show SG1, I watch it and always get that warm fuzzy feeling like seeing an old friend whom I have not seen in years.

I don't even watch Skiffy on Friday anymore :(

[identity profile] penfold-x.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this might be the only way to get me to watch the Universe premier. Well played, SciFi.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I see all stuntcasting as a calculated move to draw in viewers who otherwise are off doing something else.

I don't watch skiffy anymore either, and even if they have him ( will watch him in the SG-1 movie though) on the BabyGate, I still would not watch it. I'll keep waiting for the SGA movie!

A couple of seconds cameo by Daniel is no where near enough to get me to watch SGU, especially if he comes in as Snarky Action Jackson instead of the early series geeky Daniel who I loved.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
One would hope they'd give him more than a couple minutes, but who knows? Betcha though he won't appear until the second half, just to make fans watch both parts ;)

Yeah, a lot will depend on the writing. if they go the way of BSG, it would probably turn me off, as would retreading scripts I've already seen retreaded ;)

Unless the replace the entire cast of 90210 with the cast from Atlantis, I still ain't watching.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I could only wish...

[identity profile] zikade.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah right. As much as I like Shanks, why do they always prefer SG1 actors? It's about time someone from Atlantis, preferably Sheppard, does a cameo in the SGU pilot. Grrr.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
THAT would definitely make me watch live, although I'd prefer they just give us a TWO HOUR SGA movie really quick, with Sheppard definitely in the front.

Stunt casting is putting it mildly. Maybe they have been reading the underwhelming response to their cast so far.
And hadn't Joe M said several times that there were no plans for any SG-1 or Atlantis cast to make appearances?
Well maybe I will watch more than the first episode but other than this, I have not been very impressed.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't pay too much attention to what JM says as it's usually, well, vague... but yeah, I do sorta recall the 'no SGA' part...

[identity profile] cimmerdeux.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so not surprised that they're pimping out Jackson again. It's the old bait and switch. I expect we might see Woolsey too and IF we do get an SGA actor it will be at mid-season where JM has already said special guest star.

I'm too old to play these games anymore. The only one who could possibly entice me to watch an episode of SGU is Sheppard and I 'know' we won't get him so unless there is an SGA movie my Stargate days are over I think.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's a standard tactic employed by studios to lure in the former audience, although I'll say Daniel is a far better attraction than CArter, but Sheppard would be a top draw in my book :)

[identity profile] djlmarks.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
I think everyone should have a cameo in this show...be a recurring role. It sounds like Atlantis crew would do well.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm.... all depends on the show. You can't have that many cameos if the ship is supposedly unable to return home...
