Invasion of the fungi!

I decided to take a look around a local river, since it was pretty low a couple weeks ago, but after tropical depression Nicole came through, I wanted to see if there were any changes.

Instead, I found the mushrooms on steroids!

This is HUGE mushroom next to my foot.

The big fungi and its relative (in foreground). Invasion of the fungi! Run, run for your lives!

And just for reference... Trader Joe's bag is 12.5" x 15", so, whoa, a lot of mushroom. I'm sure it's not healthy to eat though...

A batch of weird very fuzzy looking mushrooms!

A local pond, but shot on way too low a shutter speed, so it fuzzed up, but it's got a warped artistic appeal. The bottom half if the reflection off the water.

The river, which overflowed its banks.

Lastly, my favorite. Two leaves, caught on twigs sticking out of wafer, while water swirls around them.

And that's it :)

UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gross.
Every time I think of fungus I think of what I had growing on
the top of my foot years ago...............
It would not heal. It wept all the time.
Finally my father took a culture and it turned out to be
some sort of fungus..........not Athlete's foot
It was weird as it grew in a perfect circle size of a dime.

I've heard about foot fungus ( have avoided it thus far ) but don't mind mushrooms. Fungus can be fascinating as long as it's not growing on you ;)

Odd you say that because from what I can recall now my father said something very similar when I showed it to him...He was very interested and immediately took a culture. I don't know why they did not do that when I went to sick call....
Once it was identified he quickly took care of it.
Nasty little bugger.
To this day I haven't a clue where I picked it up and it never moved out of that dime size place on top of my foot over my right ankle.

It's all in the perspective...never had a fungus growing on my foot like [livejournal.com profile] sharpes_hussy...so I think the photos are stunning. Love the fuzzy white ones, I took mycology in college and I don't remember that species.

Such beautiful scenery. You live in such a gorgeous area.

THe white fuzzy ones are very weird and curious-looking. Gotta see if I can find out what they are. As for the soccer ball sized 'shrooms, I drove past a neighbor's yard and there's one in there too!!!

It is a nice area but it's being overbuilt, alas :(

Mushrooms! I think mushrooms are cool :D I love it when they grow in a way that they look like little tea-tables fairies might use. Man, I miss livigin near a forest :/

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
well, I went to a park to find those mushrooms. We get little puffballs in the lawn sometimes and if you hit them with a lawnmower purple dust flies everywhere and I hold my breath! ;)

Have to admit that if I ever have to move, I'd have to move somewhere with a) tree frogs, b) chipmunks & Squirrels, c)dark sky. Tired of light pollution.

Those are some awesome shots.

I really like the fuzzy looking mushrooms and the slightly blurry water shot

Thanks :)

I'd need to see more of the big mushroom to give you an ID (looking at the gills underneath is a big key). I think the fuzzy ones are a slime mold.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
well, maybe I can go back and see. I don't want to disturb them. THey look so... otherworldly... but if one gets knocked over, I can do an underside shot.

Eeuuuu, slime mold!

Eek! (I have a major giant-fungus squick. One of the most horrifying events of my life was a walk through a lovely forested park, where at every turn I was confronted with the specter of giant gross fungi of all sorts of colors on every surface -- on trees, on the ground, on logs, above me, below me, at eye level -- just lurking and glistening and fuzzing and grossing me out without mercy. Ick!)

Still, great pix.

Thanks> I hate to say it, but that sounds fascinating, if not like a SyFy movie! ;)

[identity profile] black-raven135.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Can totally relate. They creep me out..............
and 'lurking' is an excellent way to describe them.
I equate that sort of thing with dark, damp, nasty smelling caves......
:-/

Heyyy....those are puffballs! Some people slice em up, fry em, and eat em. Not me. Ick.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Very big. They seem pretty solid. I went back and poked at them today.

Thanks. And to think that river was very low two weeks ago.

I have always been fascinated by wild mushrooms and fungi, but I don't think I've ever seen any as huge as those; they're totally awesome! And I love that last shot :o)

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I usually find tiny mushrooms growing on ground, or on trees, but these were massive. Never seen them that big either!

Yes, I really liked that last shot too. Looks a lot nicer across the comptuer monitor :)

[identity profile] parisindy.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
we've been plagued with mushrooms this year
which is really weird cause usually our summers are super dry
lovely pictures though

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
These are the first mushrooms I've really seen this summer. They seem to be making up for lost time ;)

[identity profile] parisindy.livejournal.com 2010-10-04 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
hehe they are big.. i would be looking for hobbits or something hehe

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2010-10-05 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, that would be fun, wouldn't it?

[identity profile] strange-magic.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Those are some seriously honkin' big mushrooms!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup!

[identity profile] alyssa22.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
Holy hell that's big!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely! Now if they'd just sprout feet and start walking, I could make a movie... ;)

[identity profile] hilde.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 08:33 am (UTC)(link)

Holy moly! That's a big fungus!

The leaves pic is just wonderful though. :)

[identity profile] urbpan.livejournal.com 2010-10-04 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Nice giant puffball shots! The fuzzy ones are a smaller cousin of the big puffballs.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2010-10-05 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Ooooooooooooooooooooh.

[identity profile] archersangel.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
there's a fungus among us!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2010-10-12 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, yep. Found another one on my own road! Decided to cut it open and it's just a puffball.
