Upcoming Stargate Atlantis Merchandise (books, calendar)

Was perusing Amazon and Fandemonium...

Dates to bookmark!

August 2007 - Stargate Atlantis 2008 Calendar (Square Calendar)

Sept 25, 2007 - SGA Novel: Casualties of War by Elizabeth Christensen

Snippet from site:  One person wrote on Amazon: "Lt. Col. John Sheppard submits his resignation following a mission in which two of his team members were lost, while Elizabeth Weir negotiates with two warring tribes who have traces of the Ancient ATA gene."  The author also posted "Casualties of War, due out in the fall, is my first full-length solo effort.  The plot centers on a planet whose bitterly contested natural resource may provide a weapon against the Asuran replicators -- if the Atlantis expedition is willing to make some tough choices to obtain it.  It's also a bit of a character piece about both John Sheppard and Elizabeth Weir, which was an aspect I really enjoyed exploring.  Often, because of time constraints and the pace of the TV series, we don't get to see the personal repercussions of the characters' difficult choices on screen.  I've tried to dig a little deeper into that concept here, and I hope I've done it justice."

Oh, picture of cover too.

November 25 2007 - Blood Ties by Elizabeth Christensen & Sonny Whitelaw. One person wrote on Amazon: ""The Atlantis team returns from the Pegasus Galaxy to investigate a Wraith sighting on Earth. Teaming up with members of SG-1, they soon discover that the Wraith aren't the only monsters stalking human prey."  Author's notes say "I'm still working with the amazing Sonny Whitelaw as well; our third tag-team effort, Blood Ties, is set for a winter 2007 release.  This book takes some members of the Atlantis team on a mission to a planet they don't investigate very often: Earth.  Ever wonder about the similarity of the Wraith to various Earth legends such as vampires or succubi?  We dove into that idea headfirst, and it's been a blast.  One of SG-1's primary members will be tagging along for the ride as well -- since we're talking about mythology here, SG fans shouldn't find it too hard to guess which one ..."

Novels are $7.99 each.

Can't wait!!

I love the SGA novels, but the last couple of efforts by these women haven't been so great :( Exogenesis was a test of my ability to read utter crap in the name of fandom. That being said, Chosen was pretty decent. I'm holding out hope, especially for Christensen's solo effort.

Right now I'm in the middle of the latest - Entanglement - it's a little slow. I'm spoiled by fanfic that gets into the meat of the action pretty quickly.

I know! It was kind of a disappointment, after Reliquary. entanglement is still a good novel, don't get me wrong, but... I was expecting more, you know? Though I do have to say, OMG it would make an awesome episode.

Me too. And, um. ::cough:: H/C, cause I do love me some hurt and comfort.

Martha is definitely my favourite writer of the current pool at Fandemonium who write for SGA.

Any of these books trying to compete with fanfic is a problem - fanfic is there all the time and comes in whatever flavour takes your fancy. These books have to adhere to canon and alas, fanon has a richer orchard from which to pluck it's fruit...

She's so good. She's got a great SGA voice -- Reliquary, especially. She even got Teyla down, and she's a tough character to write without making her a caricature.

Speaking of that, does it seem to you that Christensen and Whitelaw don't really like Rodney? Because if Wells is good at making Teyla organic, C and W fail COMPLETLEY in that respect when it comes to Rodney.

I agree, but I've also got to say that there is some gen fic in SGA fandom that give the novels a run for their money :)

Definitely - her characterisations are spot on. A lot of writers - fandom or not - totally fail at Teyla.

I found their Rodney-voice was totally off, so you're not on your own. He seems very forced in their offerings. Some of their characterisations in scenes are really OOC too. I also don't find their writing totally seamless either. In places it is blatantly obvious the one bit was written by one and the next by the other.

In Chosen I kind of let it go, because it was their first novel, and they kind of redeemed him in the end. But oh, dear GOD, Exogenesis? He cried. It was like someone asked them to think of the most out of character thing for Rodney to do, and they said -- let him weep.

Yes. Straight-out-of-badfic OOC.

Yes. I think the plot suffers for it, too.

Chosen wasn't particularly bad, and had enough pace that you could ignore the characterisation being a little 'off'. Exogenesis was particularly heinous for characterisation, which was a shame cos the overall idea of the story was really good. It just failed in its execution. And because the pace wasn't there, it's failings were more apparent.

I agree, some of the things are right out of bad-fic. And they need to tighten up as a writing unit. I'm hoping that Beth can write on her own. We'll see.

Definitely. Shame they don't do an open call for SGA like they did for SG-1.

Apologies [livejournal.com profile] wraithfodder - LJ won't let me post in one comment...

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2007-06-03 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. There are a few fanfic writers who do excellent teamwork fic - who could do great novels. Heck, they've written novel-length stories. HOpefully they'll do an open call.

The trouble with any TV novelizations is that whoever is in charge likes to make the books as appealing as possible to the widest possible audience possible, so that means you may not get the indepth stuff we get in fanfic.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2007-06-03 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a very eloquent way of describing the wealth of fanfic :)

[identity profile] anjak-j.livejournal.com 2007-06-04 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
:oD I shock myself sometimes...

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2007-06-03 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I finished "Entanglement" and it was good but it wasn't great, not like fanfic is. Man, I am spoiled. I also was expecting, well, more, but yes, it would have been a great episode. I won't say more so not to spoil for those who haven't read it.

[identity profile] kristen999.livejournal.com 2007-06-04 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
How did you buy Entanglement? Borders, nor Barnes and Noble ever had it, and I can only find used copies on Amazon for more than the cover price!

I direct order from the publisher, Fandemonium. Very quick and easy.

http://www.stargatenovels.com/

It's how I've gotten 'em all. Quick and easy, and postage is just a couple bucks (well, could be a little more now that that the PO changed rates). Plus you get a Stargate bookmark, at least I did with the last order. :)

Thank you!!

They do sound fab... the mock-up covers are a bit chortle-worthy though. ;)

[identity profile] anjak-j.livejournal.com 2007-06-03 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Please tell me those covers are not the actual ones, cos those are really poor...

The synopsis' sound interesting, but I have to say, I found their last joint effort a bit of a chore to read. It was a great idea, just badly executed.

I'm interested to see what Elizabeth's solo effort will be like though.

On the issue of dates to bookmark...that will be End of October/early November for 'Casualties of War', and December/January for 'Blood Ties' then. Forgive my cynicism, but Fandemonium are crap at keeping to their advertised publishing dates.

[identity profile] pisces227.livejournal.com 2007-06-03 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I've only read the first novel, which was ok, but these seem to be interesting. Thanks for the heads up.

Ah, so *this* is where you are hiding....

[identity profile] astropoet.livejournal.com 2007-06-03 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
Oh good. Another $16 I can not give to PTB.

[identity profile] ladybeth.livejournal.com 2007-06-03 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I am sooooo getting Bloodties. It sounds really interesting. And it has a bonus of having Daniel.
