Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock won't air on PBS till this coming Sunday so I'm sticking my fingers in my ears. No spoilers. LALALALALALLAA!

There's still nothing that grabs me fannishly like Stargate Atlantis did, although Sherlock comes close. I do watch CBS's Elementary and it's good and entertaining. Big Bang Theory is still the only comedy I watch - love all the sci-fi in-jokes. Why couldn't they have had something like that when I was a kid?

Let' see, what else?

I watch Almost Human - it's the only decent cop-buddy show on the air. It's pretty simple at times, but I do like the characters. Now Sleepy Hollow... yeah, I could listen to Tom Mison read the phonebook. He's great as Ichabod and thus far, they're doing excellent with Ichabod's view of present day America (why do you not drink the water from the lake? uh yeah, sure, parasites, pollution, you name it!) ;) Being Human has returned but it's against Sleepy Hollow, so I watch that show until it goes into repeats and will hopefully catch Being Human (which amazingly follows Almost Human, so surely we must get another show with Human in the title and a "C" word in front) in repeats on cable rewind.

Still watch NCIS, but since it repeats left and right, it's not must-see TV. I watchted the first Intelligence on CBS, tried the first couple minutes of next episode, then bailed. Nah. I definitely stay up to watch Person of Interest, which has major cast changes with the death of one character, with Reese trying to just leave it all behind (which may get some resolution in tonight's Reese-on-a-plane episode). I can't think of anything I really watch on Wednesday nights anymore, unless it's PBS or cable. Oh, I got hooked on the French series, um, American title The Returned, I think, about dead people who suddenly started showing up in a town next to a dam. They're not zombies, per se, they just show up as if nothing happened and have no memories of dying. Everybody is of course creeped out. All subtitled, slow in comparison to US stuff, but loved the music, and it was intriguing.

I watch the pilot for Helix on SyFy and do like it. Don't know if I'll ever think of the song Do you know the way to San Jose? in the same vein ever again. I'll stick with it, I think, because I'm a sucker for lethal virus stuff, although it made me think of a hybrid between the movies Outbreak and World War Z, the latter which I just saw on DVD and when the heroes went to the WHO (World Health Organization) who was one of the doctors at WHO but Doctor Who, the new Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi. Neat. Of course I sit there watching Helix with quibbles such as why does a facility in the Arctic have such big wide corridors and how the hell do they heat it and does everybody have huge air ducts like they had in the Seaview?

Otherwise, we had snow, we had ice, we had the 'polar vortex' and temps went below zero Fahrenheit and the car door froze shut on one car and the garage door froze shut and I had to get out the hair dryers to thaw the frigging wheel things on the rail (yes, those technical terms). Wind chill was below zero while shoveling so I had to leave glasses inside, shovel albeit a bit fuzzily, so I could wear a N95 mask on my face to I didn't freeze off my nose and lips. Yeah, THAT cold. I had to shovel the driveway, and then when I finally get to the end, the road isn't plowed, so had to wait for them to go by as yeah, I went to work.

Meanwhile.... )

I've been to three library book sales in as many weeks. Curse these libraries, holding them so close together!  And foolishly, I got there early (like an hour early) to secure a spot in the front, sorta. See the dealers show up the day (or days) before and mark their spot. There's one dealer who hires teenagers to grab stuff for him. Blech. A lot of dealers are perfectly fine, but there are a few who give them a bad name: the 'scoopers' - who come and literally wipe a whole section of a table into a box to sort out later, the ones that step on your feet, and of course, those with the accursed scanners. Most have 'em but most are polite enough NOT to grab and scan, then toss the book into a mess atop other books.Grrr.

Anyway, I'm trying to complete a collection of C.J. Box books about a game warden in Wyoming. However, I only go for paperbacks as hardbacks take up too much space. Have almost all the Robin Cook novels that I'm seeking, and only need one or two more of the Barbara Kingsolver books. I read TheBean Tree and its predecessor, and they're enjoyable reads.Otherwise, I'm searching for fiction books on plagues, end of the world (found 2012) and sci-fi books that are 1) not part of a multi-length series, 2) based on a videogame!), or 3) Star Trek or Star Wars. Lots of the latter categories end up in book sales. I did find a cool Reader's Digest book on road trips. I may never do those trips, but I can read about 'em. Also got the Complete Survival Manual by National Geographic, so, now when I'm stranded in the Arctic, I'll know what to do ;) Audiobooks are next to impossible to find, at least the ones I'm looking for, basically ones narrated by Joe Barrett, who has a fantastic voice. I noticed at the sales that the dealers were like locusts over the Manga section. The animal sections has tons of Marley and Me and Dewey the Library Cat books. Twlight has now replaced Harry Potter in the kid's section.

My survival at book sales is to bring just one grocery bag. I'll load it up, but nothing past that. I still have about four bags to read and they're making this tower in my room....

Saw this big bad bird outside in the tree today. Had to be 18" tall, if not more. They grow big here due to all the bunnies and squirrels they're always picking off.

red tailed hawk

And it looked fat, too, but I'm sure part of that is fluffed-up feathers because of the cold, but it's also a big bird...

Meanwhile, I am watching the Superbowl because I'm not sure if anything else is on and I'm on the computer and I just look up for the ads. I have no idea who is winning the game but I should pay attention so I don't seem stupid when I go to work tomorrow ;) So far the ads are very uneven. A few fun ones, but mostly unmemorable. I mean, would it kill them to use a cute squirrel or other rodent in an ad?

Email, shamelessly snerched from my email box, on the Stargate Atlantis / Stargate SG-1 novels:

Novel news )
wraithfodder: (Default)
I realized I've probably seen more movies this summer, than I have in the last three years (in the theater, that is)...

Super 8 - attracted by Kyle Chandler and the retro plot. It worked well. Nothing too deep, but it was fun.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, part 2 - since I missed part 1 in the theaters, I had to borrow friend's DVD so I could remember the plot. So watched that on a SAturday, and saw part 2 on a Sunday. The HP series is great. I remember when the books first came out I was like, 'eh, no thanks' but then my friends ranted on about them and I figured, hmm, I should just check it out and got hooked.

Cowboys & Aliens - basically, that's it. Cowboys vs. aliens. Nothing at all deep but whoa, Daniel Craig can rustle my cows any time. Woof! It was sorta like the old Gary Cooper movies (the ending).

Transformers: Dark of the Moon - total mindless drivel. However, both my friend and I wanted to see something that fell into that category and it fit the bill. I'd never buy the film, heck no, and it's weird to say that the new vapid girl-of-the-movie is a better actor than Meghan whatsername.

Captain America - never read the comics, but the movie was good. Nothing earthshattering, nothing deep, but it was fun.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes - okay, I saw this one mainly because I wanted to see David Hewlett in it (hear that, David, I spent $8.50 to see  YOU!) And oh hey, Ty Olssen (1st Deputy Andy on Eureka) and Mike Dupod (bounty hunter on SG1) were in it. It was fun to see them, but alas none of their characters fared very well. In fact, not well at all. Ouch. The special effects with the chimps, etc. was very well done. The plot holes/ logic flaws were big enough to drive Donald Trump's ego through.

Overall, I enjoyed them all. Saw trailers for Battleship. OMG, they've made a movie out of a *board game*! I snorted, thinking, eh, it's like Transformers (probably is) but wait, it has Liam Neeson. Okay, I may check it out. The Apollo 18 film looks interesting, but.... on DVD. The Debt looks like a meaty film, but it also looks dismal. I'm undecided on watching that, despite Sam Worthington being in it. I'd be tempted to watch Brad Pitt's Moneyball because the trailer looked good, even though I couldn't give a rat's patootie about baseball. Oh yeah, there was Shark Attack 3D or something/whatever, in which stupid young people go to a remote island for the weekend (and I'm sure they have NO cellphone reception) and are promptly harrassed and devoured by an evil shark in the lake, lagoon, whatever. It's just a higher production quality SyFy flick in 3D.

I did see Unstoppable on HBO (although I will probably ditch the movie channels - too pricey now). Great flick! Makes me wonder when on earth they'll get around to make Star Trek 2. I hear they want to; just have to get the cast together. Anyway, Unstoppable was great and I really liked the one supporting character, Ned, the guy with the long blond hair, sunglasses, who helped save the day at the end. I'm surprised this film didn't get more press as it was very entertaining.

Meanwhile, my pumpkin is no more (waaah!) but the gourd vine has two gourds on it! Of course, this probably means I've cursed it. The tomato plants may be done. The bean plants are GONE. Something ate them before they could even sprout a single pod. Bummer. The zinnias, however, are growing. I have two HUGE zucchinis to eat. I can always count on squash to grow.

As for TV, let's see, Flashpoint ended its run. CBS is still undecided on more episodes while CTV will debut new season in September. I'll get copies *somehow*. Um, um, Eureka will be toast soon (sigh). Haven is okay, but better than Warehouse 13, because, alas, I'm getting tired of young geeky know-it-all females with colored hair (perhaps I've watched too much TV). I would love to see Gibbs from NCIS come in and slap DiNozzo, I mean Pete, across the head ;) Alphas hasn't warmed to me yet. Darn.

But....! A friend introduced me to the Joe Pickett novels by writer C.J. Box. I started with listening to some audiobooks, so of course I'm reading it all out of order, but it's okay. I'm now starting with the first novel (library has them all, thank you thank you!). If they ever made a movie out of one of these novels, Joe Flanigan would be *perfect* as Joe Pickett. I could see him as the game warden, with conflicts, with marital problems, kids, a friend whom the Feds want for several crimes, and of course, in blue jeans :)
wraithfodder: (invader zim)

Yes, my life is so exciting I'm videotaping the bluebbery pie that's fresh out of the oven. However, the bubbling, and squeaking noises, are amusing. Okay, maybe just to me, but I'm waitin for it to cool down so I can eat it! :)

Otherwise, today I got robbed. Bought gas. $3.579 a gallon!!! for the cheap stuff! However, I drove by another gas station and it was $3.759 for the cheap stuff. It's insane. Gas is gonna be over $4 if not more by Memorial Day, which will make our annual MediaWest*Con drive rather pricey, and if you attend MW*C, the sign-up phase is now going on. More details at http://blog.mediawestcon.org/

Also, I've discovered the joys of audiobooks (okay, I'm a bit behind). I went through the cassette audiobooks I got at the summer library sales - got a Tony Hillerman novel and a Robin Cook one (that's because my car is so old it has a cassette player). It really  makes the daily commute better. However, got my hands on the doohickie connectors so I can now connect my CD players to the cassette player and listen to the books on CD, of which there are LOTS more in the library. I'm working my way through thrillers. Just finished Kyle Mills' Darkness Falls, about ecoterrorists of sorts destroying the oil fields. I listened to that as I watched gasoline go up over a dime in one week. ACK! I've determined, despite length, that unabridged is far better than abridged (listened to one abridged one done by Stephen Collins - about a killer shark - and it was like listening to a SyFy film) ;)  Right now I'm going through the library stock, as well, it's free, although if anybody  has recommendations for good thrillers/horror/scifi. There's still a few more Robin Cooks and Tony Hillermans to go through at my library.

The snow is melting. A day or so of rain, plus no snowstorms and some higher temps, helped immensely. The driveway is now basically snow free. The lawn is not. The bluejay I buried in the snow has yet to resurface. Sorta hoping something digs it up as frozen food soon. I had to clear all the ice/snow/bird seed under bird feeder as it turned into a hideous mess, and oh yea, they found the pumpkin! I had put it there by the birdfeeder, hoping squirrels would eat it, but it got buried under snow. Then, the squirrels found it and hollowed it out. Here's the pumpkin pothole picture:

Our Authors

Our authors are the lifeblood of Stargate SG-1 Novels. They are a diverse bunch - creative, energetic and, most importantly, fans of the show!
Each one has a different take on the show. Some of them will focus on the mythology while others concentrate on new technologies, conspiracies and politics. Of course, all of them will deliver the excitement and action/adventure you've come to expect from Stargate SG-1.
It's too early to post details of individual authors yet (they're a shy and retiring bunch - really!), but as we get closer to publication dates for individual novels, we'll try to fill you in with details about their writing credits and their views on the show.

Rest at link above

wraithfodder: (McKay-this is cool)

Author Jo Graham talks about John Sheppard at her LJ … “John Sheppard is a pile of contradictions -- awkward and decisive, loyal and independent, connected and alienated. He's fascinating. He's also the main character, the first one in the credits, the main viewpoint character of the series.”

I can't wait for this Legacy series. It sounds like we'll get some nice meaty indepth characterization!!

http://megburden.livejournal.com/ is the blog of Meg Burden, who is co-writing the Stargate: Atlantis Legacy series.

And http://amygriswold.livejournal.com/, another co-author of the Legacy series.

Meanwhile, upcoming books, with due dates plucked from stargatenovels.com and Amazon:

Legacy Series by Jo Graham and Amy Griswold

Book 1: Homecoming (Oct 2010)

Book 2: The Lost (Feb 2011)

Book 3: Allegiance (Jun 2011)

Book 4: Avengers (Oct 2011)

Book 5: The Secret (Spring 2012)

Book 6: The Inheritors (Summer 2012)

Meanwhile, it’s sorta hard to keep track of the numbers of the stand-alone novels…

SGA-15: Death Game (by Jo Graham)  (09/16/2010) (oh wait, that's TODAY! OMG, must order from Amazon as local stores never have them)

SGA-14: ???

SGA-13: Brimstone (by David Niall Wilson)  (09/2010) – I don’t think this book it out yet, although Amazon has odd “we don’t know when it will be back in stock” notice. I don’t recall it being for sale!

Correction: #14 is "Hunt and Run". Amazon's numbering system is off and *smacks self* should have dug books off the shelf to verify. Thx to those who did just that ;)

Just finished THE FOOTPRINTS OF GOD, good book! It's one I picked up at a library book sale for 50 cents. Money well spent. I do recommend that one.

So, back to the library. And unfortunately, so is everyone else. At this rate I won't be reading the Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child 'Pendergast' novel FEVER DREAM until Fall! But then again, big library book sale at end of July so maybe I can pick it up for a few bucks... Just finished the thriller SEA CHANGE by James Powlik, about a 'slick' in the ocean that eats people and fish and even causing damage on land. It was a pretty good read, and everytime they used booms to contain the slick, all I could think of was the Gulf oil spill. ... next up is MUTANT by Peter Clement, a medical thriller of sorts about DNA and H5N1 and how people shouldn't muck about genetidcally engineering stuff as hoardes of folks will die horribly. Well, I'm only about 20 pages into book but it looks like it's heading that way :)

Last, saved for July 4th weekend, is the new Stargate Atlantis novel DEAD END. Am holding out on that  for the 3-day weekend (I hope I get time!) plus i'm also eagerly reading [livejournal.com profile] kristen999 's RED SANDS novella, which she's posting a part of every other day (it's 16 parts). Nice deep survival tale with Sheppard and Ronon. Good stuff!

And I suppose I should read the instruction manual for the DVR...

Bought books! Got poison ivy!

First, my haul from the local library book sale.

library book sale

I think you can detect a pattern. All the Douglas Preston-Lincoln Child books. I've read them all from the library, but I did want to get paperbacks and at 50 cents each, can't pass it up! The rest, well, disaster novels. There wasn't much in either department (romance novels and James Patterson books abounded!). And oh yes, the disco CD set. Very cool! Okay, I do like some disco and at $6 for 3 CDs...

THen I gardened and got poison ivy. Icky picture here: http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/wraithfodder/poison_ivy_next_day.jpg  And it's spreading. Ah, this is part of what I dislike about spring/summer, etc. That and ticks. Eeeeuuu..

Well, I suppose I could have filled out the surveys, but in the end it would be rather obvious I had no idea what I was talking about.... the 4gig iPod was what you got for filling out a survey on NPT on rigs (aka, non-productive time on automated oil rigs). Since I have no oil rigs, the questions got... confusing. Secondly, another trade paper wanted me to tell them all about managing ad sales on cable television. Alas, just a mere viewer, so there's $100 I can't grab. Darn.

Meanwhile, finished the book Head Case, which was definitely a fascinating study of brain injuries, traumatic and otherwise. Apparently there are some states which suck in treating injuries, and others which excel. And when I returned the book to the library, I saw the spider book back on the shelf (what? nobody wants to read about creepy crawlies so close to Halloween?) and then spied Manic, a book on bipolar disorder, so since I seem to be on an odd run of reading books on brains, I grabbed it, as well as Bastard Tongues, what appears to be a fascinating look into language differences.

Gonna fiddle with Filezille tonight to download websites AOL is gonna trash (I realized I've been using their websites since... oh, 2000? long time!)

Well, I finished the Private Lives of Spiders, and have put it on my 'must buy' list when I have spare cash. I returned it to the library and the lady at the desk said 'thank you' and as I walked away I heard her go "eeuuu!" and another woman said "What's wrong?" and the lady said "Spiders!" so obviously she hadn't quite seem what the book was until she turned it face up. Oops.

Meanwhile, picked up Head Cases  (author: Michael Paul Mason) from the new book aisle. It's a book on stories of brain jury and its aftermath. Looks rather fascinating.

Just wathed the first hour of Heroes and have no idea what's going on, so am going to record the rest and for some unfathomable reason, watch CSI: MIami! ;)

Alas, bad Stargate Atlantis news... (yes, besides the cancellation). The novels #4-Halcyon and #5-Exogenesis are out of print for the foreseeable future. In other words, unless there is suddenly a market for thousands of copies (which is what the print run would require), you have to shop used book stores. Right now, greedy people are charging $70 and more for a used paperback. Grrr!  (oh and I got this news direct from Stargatenovels.com)

Sorry!

wraithfodder: (graykitty)
Yes, I read the oddest books. I'm back on my non-fiction book jag, having just completed Food, Sex and Salmonella: Why Our Food is Making Us Sick (Dr. David Waltner-Toews)  which has no sex in it, by the way, but plenty of information on food poisoning. I had no idea Canada had had so many outbreaks (this is a Canadian publication) and apparently fermented walrus and/or seal flippers can leave you with a nasty case of botulism! Meanwhile, back in the late 1950s, there was a horrid case of mercury poisoning in Japan, and the disease was commonly referred to as "dancing cat disease" as when cats got mercury poisoning, they were staggering, running or collapsing. Ouch. But, if you like non-fiction medical type books on the subject, I recommend it.

Now, onward to the HUGE color hardback called The Private Lives of Spiders (Paul Hillyard) which has big, gorgeous shots of various arachnids. I'll cease and desist here, for the arachnophobes who may be reading my LJ ;)

But shall also take a break to read a whole bunch of new Staragte Atlantis fanfic that's come out! :)

Stargate Atlantis novel: Angelus
by Peter J. Evans

This is a snippet of a forthcoming SGA novel:

"So we're screwed." Ellis rubbed his chin, still glaring at the map. "We can't get a true picture of what's going on, and what we don't know could kill us."

"Yeah," Carter added grimly. "If the Wraith find out where Atlantis is, they'll swarm us. If the Replicators find out, they'll do worse. The city's long range sensors are great at picking up moving objects, but as for what those objects are doing... Righ tnow I feel like a kid caught up in a bar fight, hiding under the table. I can hear the pool cues on heads, but I don't dare stick my own head out to see where the danger is."

Ellis had been in a few bar rights in his time, although he had normally been wielding the cue. "But McKay says he's got a plan?"

"Hasn't he always?" Carter had smiled at him, briefly. "He's gone all retro on us. A series of early-warning sensors, dropped into these systems here..."

A listing is up at Amazon, but no details.

This looks to be the first novel based in season 4.

Okay, I snerched this from someone on my Flist, who posted books they had read or were reading, and I thought, why not. At least I'll be able to keep track of what I've read this way ;)

Books I’ve finished reading lately… and ah, yes, they’re all non-fiction.

The following two books are pretty self-explanatory and really fascinating:

Bitten –   True Medical Stories of Bites and Stings - by Pamela Nagami MD (and they cover insects and jellyfish and well, just about anything that stings or bites)

The Woman with a Worm in Her Head – Other True Stories of Infectious Disease - by Pamela Nagami MD (yeah, a woman really had parasites in her head)

The Up and Down Life: The Truth About Bipolar Disorder – the Good, the Bad, and the Funny – by Paul E. Jones (I found this book when I was at the library and they were showing a documentary film on Lyme Disease (to a packed house, since there’s so much Lyme in this area) and just spied it and thought, hmm, looks interesting, and it was.

In process:

Kitchen Table Wisdom – by Rachel Naomi Remen MD (almost done with this one, which is a doctor's accounting about humanity and the medical arts)

Complications: A Surgeon’s Notes on an Imperfect Science  by Atul Gawande (halfway through; a surgeon writes about what it's like to be a surgeon)

How It Feels to be Attacked by a Shark and Other Amazing Life-or-Death Situations! – by Michelle Hamer (I just read a chapter here and there - I have yet to read the chapter on the person who got run over by a tractor - twice).

The Backpackers Handbook – by Hugh McManners (got this for a buck at a rummage sale and went, ah, I don’t backpack into the wilds, but now I know how to make a quinze)

Panic in Level 4 – by Richard Preston (Great collection of non-fic writing which I got from the library. Halfway through, read the Ebola chapter, the apartment turned into a supercomputer in the quest for pi (pi, not pie), and about a disease which causes the victim to eat his fingers. Eeeeuuuuu).

And............

.....all the in-process book reading will come to a screeching halt this weekend as today in the mail – it arrived! Yes, the Stargate Atlantis novel “Mirror, Mirror” by Sabine Bauer is now in my hot hands. JJ Nice cover. The DVD people could take a hint from the book people….

And I'm pretty sure all these books can be found at Amazon or most bookstores ...

Should I tag someone with this? Never sure how that works but would be curious to see what other folks are reading :)

wraithfodder: (Shep-stealth)

Well, every free chance I got, I read the book, so, I’m done! I’m doing a review, with very few spoilers (some scenes mentioned, but no, I’m not tattling on who dies or gets shot, etc.)

With the threat of the Asurans hovering over Atlantis like the sword of Damocles, and casualties mounting among the crew, the promise of devising a weapon from new Ancient technology is simply too good to pass up, only this time it’s John Sheppard who pushes for its discovery, with disastrous personal consequences….

My friend got me a copy of "Casualties of War," the not-yet-released Stargate Atlantis paperback, at the Creation Con in Chicago! Told the folks at the table that she was ordered, under pain of death, to get the book (I think I just whined and begged) so the autographed copy will be in the mail tomorrow. Can't wait!!

Oooh, some good news on the Stargate Atlantis front. An excerpt from the upcoming SGA novel, Casualties of War, by Elizabeth Christensen , can be found at

Here's an excerpt off the page:

Coming September 2007

After the events of the third-season episodes “Progeny” and “The Real World,” the Atlantis expedition has been forced to accept the fact that the Asuran replicators are gunning for the city. A planet that was once the site of a major battle between the Ancients and the Wraith may hold the key to a weapon capable of defeating this new enemy—but the required energy source is at the heart of a bitter dispute between two societies on the planet. When tensions erupt into hostilities, Colonel Sheppard and Dr. Weir have to decide how far they’re willing to go, both for the planet’s people and for their own…and the mounting losses are pushing John Sheppard ever closer to his limits.

Visit here - http://www.elizabethchristensen.com/cow.htm - for that, plus a link to a nice big fat excerpt which looks very good....

Well, it was a pretty crappy week, with the exception of the arrival of some DVDS I got.

In fact, it was so sucky I actually was too blech to change the channel, and therefore, watched Paris Hilton on Larry King Live, but, before you disown me, let me continue. I can't say I think she's any smarter, despite her protests to the contrary. But, the best thing about her appearance is (yes, there is a silver lining to the overexposed blonde cloud) is that news reporters and even PEOPLE magazine are rebelling against the overexposure. Apparently an MSNBC reporter refused to lead with the story and even went so far as to tear up the copy. I saw the video on CNN and apparently the clip is on YouTube enjoying lots of hits. Thank god she's apparently fled to Maui to recover from her ordeal and hopefully the press will forget about her.

Back to the DVDs. Finally grabbed Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars so I can see it all. When it aired, I taped it, but only watched the five minutes. I told myself if Crichton doesn't survive, I'm not watching. Phew, he did. Also started gathering up X-Files DVDs. I'll get the whole show eventually. Finished up Emergency! (season 2 and 3). Ah, the good old days of Johnny Gage and Roy DeSoto :) Got CSI: Miami season 2 (will eventually get them all) but wanted that one for Joe Flanigan's "Slow Burn" episode. I could never grab a decent copy of David Hewlett's Boa vs. Python, so that's added to the collection. Sped through that to his parts. My, nudity in some parts (no, not David). Grabbed the miniseries Taken at a very good price. But my happiness comes from watching the old B&W BEM (bug-eyed monster) movies from the 50s ... Beast from 20,000 Fathoms/Them! (giant dinosaur, giant ants). Man, I dread the day they decide to remake those. Also got the classic The Brain from Planet Arous about an evil alien brain that floats around and kills people. Robert Fuller from Emergency! was in that, all too briefly before the brain killed him. Will add Gorgo and Giant Behemoth to my list, and I wonder if Fiend Without a Face (about killer hoppy brains created by radiation that suck your brains out of your head) is out on DVD yet.... it was good. Well, I haven't seen it in a quarter of a century but remember the brains were sooo darned cute (well, for being killer brains). Anyway, made this nice big purchase via www.deepdiscountdvd.com with a 20% off coupon and the prices were below anything in the stores here, or on Amazon.

Rain is forecast for July 4-6, and had better tackle part of the lawn tomorrow before the lawn mower can't get through it. Seems like I just mowed it but it's high again and soon the squirrels will be able to hide again.

Plan to see Transformers on July 4th. Not much else to do and it will probably rain. Oh, and hey, Dr. Who starts up on SciFi on July 6th.

Took the book Way Off the Road: Discovering the Peculiar Charms of Small-Town America by Bill Geist, out of the library. It's an odd but fun book about this reporter's travels across America.  The chapter on illegal porch furniture showed the insanity of, well, people, and now I know most of our bombs are made in McAlester, OK. I haven't gotten to the chapters yet on butter cow sculpture or demotion bus wrecking yet...

Directions:
1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 4-7 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest (unless it's too troublesome to reach and is really heavy. Then go back to step 1). (or unless it doesn't have 123 pages)

Was perusing Amazon and Fandemonium...

Dates to bookmark!

August 2007 - Stargate Atlantis 2008 Calendar (Square Calendar)

Sept 25, 2007 - SGA Novel: Casualties of War by Elizabeth Christensen

Snippet from site:  One person wrote on Amazon: "Lt. Col. John Sheppard submits his resignation following a mission in which two of his team members were lost, while Elizabeth Weir negotiates with two warring tribes who have traces of the Ancient ATA gene."  The author also posted "Casualties of War, due out in the fall, is my first full-length solo effort.  The plot centers on a planet whose bitterly contested natural resource may provide a weapon against the Asuran replicators -- if the Atlantis expedition is willing to make some tough choices to obtain it.  It's also a bit of a character piece about both John Sheppard and Elizabeth Weir, which was an aspect I really enjoyed exploring.  Often, because of time constraints and the pace of the TV series, we don't get to see the personal repercussions of the characters' difficult choices on screen.  I've tried to dig a little deeper into that concept here, and I hope I've done it justice."

Oh, picture of cover too.

November 25 2007 - Blood Ties by Elizabeth Christensen & Sonny Whitelaw. One person wrote on Amazon: ""The Atlantis team returns from the Pegasus Galaxy to investigate a Wraith sighting on Earth. Teaming up with members of SG-1, they soon discover that the Wraith aren't the only monsters stalking human prey."  Author's notes say "I'm still working with the amazing Sonny Whitelaw as well; our third tag-team effort, Blood Ties, is set for a winter 2007 release.  This book takes some members of the Atlantis team on a mission to a planet they don't investigate very often: Earth.  Ever wonder about the similarity of the Wraith to various Earth legends such as vampires or succubi?  We dove into that idea headfirst, and it's been a blast.  One of SG-1's primary members will be tagging along for the ride as well -- since we're talking about mythology here, SG fans shouldn't find it too hard to guess which one ..."

Novels are $7.99 each.

Can't wait!!

First, the folks at the Emmys have finally recognized quality!

1) Outstanding Music Composition For A Series  (Dramatic Underscore) - Stargate: Atlantis Grace Under Pressure - Composed Joe Goldsmith  :):)

2) For those with time on their hands, you can vote for JOE FLANIGAN at http://www.celeeb.com/joe-flanigan/  ;)

3) A new paperback Stargate Atlantis book entitled HALYCON will be out from Fandemonium on July 15th!

In their ongoing quest for new allies, Atlantis's flagship team travel to Halcyon, a grim industrial world where the Wraith are no long feared - they are hunted.

Horrified by the brutality of Halcyon's warlike people, Lieutenant Colonel John Sheppard soon becomes caught in the political machinations of Halcyon's aristocracy.

In a feudal society where strength means power, he realises the nobles will stop at nothing to ensure victory over their rivals.

Meanwhile, Doctor Rodney McKay enlists the aid of the daughter of Halcyon's ruler to investigate a powerful Ancient structure; but McKay's scientific brillance has aroused the interest of the planet's most powerful man - a man with a problem he desperately needs McKay to solve.

As Halcyon plunges into a catastrophe of its own making, the team must join forces with the warlords - or die at the hands of their bitterest enemy...

--text is from http://jmswallow.livejournal.com/ and go there to see the cover art!

4) At http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds34409.html, Rachel Luttrell answered questions from fans (they'll be published later) but there's a brief audio clip on the site. Some tidbits, no spoilers really as who knows what will develop...

Rachel said there was a "lot more humor injected in the series" and viewers will get to see more of "who she is, when she isn't on duty." She mentioned that they might actually "bite into something" in regards to love interests for Teyla.
