wraithfodder: (Shep-this sucks)
wraithfodder ([personal profile] wraithfodder) wrote2009-01-16 10:16 pm

Wow, it's Friday ... and there's no Stargate Atlantis :(

TV seems.... empty. I mean, for years, there it was - Stargate Atlantis - at 9:00 or 10:00 and then repeated so if the dumb Skiffy channel screwed up and digitized Shep's face into a bunch of little boxes, I could get a better copy two hours later.

Now. Zip. Well, on SciFi. I have no problem watching Flashpoint on CBS - I think the show is great - particularly Hugh Dillon. Yet, even as I'm watching it, I'm going, "wait, she was on Stargate!" Yes, it doesn't matter. I play 'spot the Stargate' actor on any Canadian production now. Anyway, next week's episode looks fantastic from the snippets they showed.

Meanwhile, Stargate Universe... Mallozzi said on his blog : "SGU will definitely be more of an arc-driven series. Although it will have its fair share of stand-alone and multi-parters, the show will have more season-long plot and character threads running through every episode." To me, this is all beginning to sound very "Battlestar Galactic-y". Right now, after the initial casting stuff is all out (still waiting for any female actors to be announced), I'm like... meh... When SGA came out with cast names, I went, "who the heck is Joe Flanigan? but omygawd, they got David Hewlett!" I just don't have the enthusiasm, even with Robert Carlyle, for this show. I think his acting talents will outweigh the writing talents (well, some of them, I should say *cough*).

Also, blast, darn, drat (instead of really swearing). SGU won't premiere till the Fall, which will probably push the SGA movie back till ... when? Definitely 2010, I'm sure but when? Gah... What kills me is that SGA is syndicating in my market - at two in the friggin' A.M.! Ack, I work for a living, I can't stay up that late watching it! If I pop in a DVD it's far to addictive to stop, so save those for weekends.

They filmed the two SG1 films in spring of 2007, but the films didn't come out until a year later. They take their own sweet time on it.

David Blue was great in Moonlight so I'm more interested now. But I'm not sure about the plots. Which was something that Enterprise tried when the production company pushed, adn while they did a good job, the show got canceled. We will have to see.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
well, moonlight is starting up repeats on Skiffy (or you can buy the whole DVD set now). I'll have to check. He was good in Ugly Betty.

[identity profile] ladybeth.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. My Grandmother has been eagerly awaiting it. She'll be glued to Sci-fi on Fridays, even though she owns the DVD set from the UK, has all the episodes recorded from a DVDR and watched them all whenever they aired the first time.

She's been one of the leaders in trying to get the show a second season.

If they jump on the BSG bandwagon for success, I am going to be seriously annoyed, even more annoyed with the SGU series itself lol

I read through the castings (nice to see a Texan there) and I am still not that interested in the show.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm wondering if the Texan still has a texas accent and if so, if he'll be allowed to use it on the show.

[identity profile] syble4.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
I ran away from my tv and went to dinner with my family, so I didn't notice the lack of SGA tonight. It really sucks, but...not much we can do about it.

Do you know if there anywhere that does a "lets talk about "this" episode tonight since there's nothing to watch" kind of thing?

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
hmm, not really, the joe flanigan list is talking about SGA, still fanfic going on (thank goodness).

[identity profile] star-climber.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
it really sucks...:(((
and if the show has anything similar to BG...i will kill myself(don't like BG)^^

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care for BSG either. Maybe in a couple yaers when it's all said and done, I'll rent the DVDS...

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_inbetween_/ 2009-01-17 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
Of course they will initially go for something like BSG or other "quality" shows.

I have to say that if you compare the unknowns to Flanigan and say you were over the moon about Hewlett but Carlyle can't compare to that, it would objectively mean that SGU has to be better than SGA!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they're trying to copy BSG but in the STargate realm. I just look at the new folk and go 'eh' becuase well, they're just photos so far. I've seen David Blue on Ugly Betty but he won't be playing that charater here (unless they make the geek gay) ;)

[identity profile] monkey-junkey.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
What bothers me about Mallozzi's spin is the fact that early SGA was very much arc-driven. There are almost no wasted episodes in S1 and I feel as if they just gave up trying by the time S4 rolled around.

But yes, there's an empty Friday night slot IN MY HEART.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I sometimes wonder if their story bible was tossing a dart at a board. Oh, haven't done that before, or have we? Nah, fans won't remember ;)

Both SGA and SG1 were best in their first three years as far as I"m concerned.

[identity profile] jacksmsstargate.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Friday just felt so wrong all day. But I did remember to watch Ghost Whisperer this week since there was nothing on SciFi that I am interested in. I MISS by Stargate fix.

I too am waiting for them to announce the female cast. Obviously MGM & the rest of TPTB have never understood that Stargate has a much larger female audience than other scifi shows.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there was this empty feeling after Flashpoint ended and it was like, um.... Wow, skiffy's got nothing to watch now.

Wonder why they're dragging their feet on announcing the female lead.

[identity profile] inaforest.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It's odd for me too, as SGA was the only thing I actually took time to sit down and watch so after so I'll be amused to see if I bother to watch tv at all next week.

I have to admit I did make a sad face at the computer when I checked my LJ this morning and there was squee-ing or bitching about the previous night's show.

On your other point, but of course there's no need to make an effort when casting women. Female characters (and fans) aren't a part of real Sci-fi, you crazy person you. /sarcasm
(In fairness to SGA, although I had one or two annoyances about the writing [Weir: Limpest Diplomat Ever; Least Effective Control Over City & Staff Ever], the 3 actresses were great in their roles.)

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, there is effort to cast women on sci fi shows. After all, they have to see how tight they can squeeze the spandex. Regrettably, even when the female character is intelligent, 9 times out of 10 they are squeezed into an outfit (Teyla only seemed to get rid of the midrif baring tops once the actress became pregnant). Trek was notorious for that (7 of 9, and the Vulcan, er, uh, played by Jolene Blalock). Carter was perhaps the only realstic female in scifi I've seen as they didn't shrink her uniform to fit her! ;) Weir was good, but yes, the writing for her was, gah... the actress gave her best.

[identity profile] mangst.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I Know. Couldn't they at least show reruns on Fridays for awhile so I can continue to live in denial.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I swear, they yank SGA off the air so quick it makes you wonder. There was a repeat, but one a.m. is a crap time.

[identity profile] zikade.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
well, more arc-driven for SGU sounds good. I like arc-driven shows. It's too bad you didn't get into Battlestar Galactica. I only could get into it at the third attempt.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe in a year or two, when the whole BSG series is out on dvd adn cheap to rent, i'll just get it all and watch it. I don't mind arc shows, but BSG - characters, etc. - just didn't interest me. Not sure about arcs on SGU as the writers on SGA/SG1 seemed so darned *against* that kind of development.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-17 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
So, skiffy is going to order season 2 without knowing if it sucks or not?

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Not to my knowledge. They haven't even started filming season one, but I do think SciFi is really counting on SGU to replace both SGA and BSG, so I suspect SGU will be a hybrid of STargate and BSG, to try to suck in both audiences. Just a guess.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-17 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
If it premieres in the fall, that doesnt leave alot of time for the renewal order.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-17 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
does it? Id ask unfortunetly, I dont read that tools journal anymore. cant afford to lose anymore brain cells ya know

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Er, does it what?

[identity profile] cybersyd.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm almost ashamed to say it, but SGA just hasn't been that good since... well... ever. It has always had the promise to be better than it is, because it has a great cast, a good concept, and a writing team who can produce gems of scripts. But they had five years to produce something of consistently good quality, and they couldn't manage it. My concern now is that the new show will suffer from all the same flaws as SGA and SG-1 in its later seasons. It won't be new and improved, it will be exactly the same, and the audience will be bored, and switch off.

I don't see why all the stuff they're promising for the new show couldn't have been done with SGA. They could have done season-long plots and character arcs with SGA. They could have given the actors some meaty stuff to show off their skills. They didn't.

I don't ever see the writers of Stargate producing a show like BSG. I adore BSG, and I'm sorry to say but I don't think the SG writing team can produce something that subtle and sophisticated. My hope is for a show of Deep Space Nine quality, seasons 5-7. That would keep me interested in the Stargate universe. Otherwise we're looking at Voyager all over again.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I think the writers are aiming to do some like BSG, but realistically, don't have what it takes to do it. This is why I have no real "rah rah" attitude toward the show, having seen them miss and blow opportunity after opportunity in SGA. Why should their MO change now?

[identity profile] stoicana.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the writing and the general concept of SGU had better be top-notch because in all honesty, I'm not really all that interested in any of the characters as of yet.

Yes I know that all we have are short one or two sentence descriptions, but that's often enough to convey at least a general idea of a character, and the characters I'm seeing just aren't grabbing my attention.

The inexperienced but brave lieutenant thrust into a leadership role before he's ready, the stoic marine with a volatile temper and tragic past, the poor little rich Senator's daughter, the under appreciated tech geek... all these characters I've seen somewhere before. Why are they any more special than the one who came before?

That said, I may be intrigued by the "Machiavellian" Dr. Nicholas Rush. Granted, TPTB have decided to make his machiavellian-ness rather obvious from the outset (I'm still rolling my eyes at the fact that they changed his name to Nicholas), but he could still make for some interesting plot lines. Although, I'm starting to get the vibe that TPTB are modeling him after Gaius Baltar from BSG. Just a thought.

What does trouble me, is the lack of talk about the female characters. Aside from what little we've heard about Chloe, we know next to nothing about Tamara (that's her name right?) and TPTB don't really seem all that interested in getting people hyped up for that announcement.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, I also thought 'Baltar' as soon as I read their description. NOthing against the cast, but none of thus far scream 'watch me live!' and I don't have a lot of trust that the writers will suddenly go up ten notches in quality.

Yeah, it's sad that there's not a mention of the female characters :(

[identity profile] djlmarks.livejournal.com 2009-01-19 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
It totally sucks not having any Stargate Atlantis anymore. I miss the sarcasm and the 80's movie references...things I can totally appreciate. Now I have to wait for Eureka to start back up for my...sarcasm and 80's movie references..........Hey, wait a minute!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-21 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Friday just isn't the same. I'm really enjoying Flashpoint, but when it ends, I go "where's SGA"?

[identity profile] naniwahine.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I've mourned the end of SGA back in August, but I also have to admit that I have recorded and not yet watched Las Vegas and E@G, so "technically" SGA isn't dead yet ;) Yes, I AM in denial.

As to SGU, it sounds like TeenGate & obviously not designed for my "advanced" 30something demographic... I'll be coming back to the first three seasons of SGA on dvd very soon. Oh, and I'm not holding my breath for that SGA movie...

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds good to me, but "Vegas" is soooo good. SGU, I'm on the fence. Neither love it nor hate it. Just sorta 'meh'.

[identity profile] naniwahine.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I caved in and finally watched Vegas last night... & swooned over Det. Shep... That's was a great, unconventional epi - like watching CSI! LOL! Not sure I'll watch SGU, even with Robert Carlyle... I miss SGA already!!!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-22 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, another one caves! ;) I'm going to give SGU a try. I usually don't say "blech" to a show unless I"ve been buried under horrible ads for it, or sit through the pilot and go "never again."

[identity profile] naniwahine.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, me too, I'll probably sit through the SGU pilot, and then we'll see ;) Oh, and after reading Rob Cooper's fan interview on JoeM's blog, first I was floored by how much work and care went into Vegas epi, and then I was inspired to write some Vegas FF...

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
HOpe you write more :) I too also was quite like, wow, with RCC's interview. Best guest interview I've read (although haven't read any book author ones as I don't want spoilers on books).

[identity profile] naniwahine.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you :) I'll probably post more of my fanfic in the future.
