Sex not Stargates Brings Fans to SG-1/Atlantis Expo
Love in a Wormhole: SG-1/Atlantis Convention

Excerpt from this 11/12/2009 article, which has a nice picture of Joe Flanigan in it...

An audience of predominantly middle aged women gathered the weekend of Nov. 6-8 at the Los Angeles Marriott at LAX for Creation Entertainment’s Official Stargate SG-1/Atlantis Convention for a chance to melt at the sight of the Beatles of Stargate — hotties Michael Shanks, Joe Flanigan, Ben Browder, and perhaps the Ringo of the group, Paul McGillion.

Hee, it was a fun article to read, and also shows that conventions are NOT just teenagers (I think that may be reserved for Twilight conventions).

What link!? I want to read the article but can't find the link in your post. :(

*duh* Added now! http://www.hollywoodtoday.net/?p=11514

But there's no link!

And I completely agree that con's are all about sex. There is a reason that 90% of the attendees are of the female persuasion.

That was fun! Except she wrote: He [Gero] continually begged the fans to stick with it. The fans most likely will.

Not this one! :P

The funny thing is that SGU is the show that's most overtly about sex, and yet a lot of the fans aren't going for it in the same way. Well, not so funny, really, because I totally understand that. I think a lot of women do find family men more appealing than those who don't seem to be. I'm a very gen person where SG is concerned, but when I have read romance (slash or het), I've generally found the fanfic better than what the show writers could do.

Paul McGillion is the Ringo of the shows? Well, yeah, if they only mention him very briefly!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, SGA and SG1 were light on sex (not so, SGU). I'm gen too, and quite honestly, prefer well-written action adventure/drama/angst over bedroom scenes anyday...

Oh man, why do I get the feeling that JF and DH are going to tease Paul mercilessly about this? Of course they'll tease because they love. =)

Great article, though I do think the title is a rather narrow view of conventions. As was stated in some of the comments following the article, a lot of people go for more reasons that simply to see the eye candy. I've never been to a con myself but would one day like to go, not so much to meet the actors, but more to meet my fellow fans.

To say it's all about the sex kind of makes the fans sound dirty, when there's more to a convention than the pretty faces.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
If it was just about 'sex', the actors wouldn't need to talk. they'd just stand there. We love to hear them impart stories, but I also know how the press works. Titles like that draw in the fans, although I have this overwhelming desire to put the proper punctuation in the title! ;)

And yup, meeting and hanging with fellow fans is a big part of doing cons. I never think to say it as I always think it's a given.

Thanks for posting this gem. It's funny and to some degree, accurate but superficial. Wished the reporter actually talked with some of the attendees to learn more about why we shell out mega bucks for the cons. I had a blast at the con (my very first one!) meeting up with GW whumpers. We had our fangirl moments but we also discussed many topics.

Thanks again.

Ah, but that would have made the article less fluffy ;) I'm just glad that Joe, et al are classified as well, hot guys. Hello, TPTB? Yes, we want to see these guys back on the TV screen.

What the press really needs to do is ask the fan: what do you do for a living? At one con I attend, you've got librarians, university professors, physics majors, surgeons, lawyers. It's a very eccletic mix.

I'm feeling a little insulted on Paul's behalf! He's just as hot as Michael, Ben, and Joe! ;^) Of course, my favorite Beatle was Ringo!

Good for Michael and Bob Picardo for expressing their opinion of SGU. I agree with Michael, it's not the actors, it's the stories. And interesting to read that Gero was begging fans to watch the new show. I wish the report had gotten some opinions about the new show from the con attendees since it seems like the majority of the people there were not the show's primary demographic.

The reporter noted a mother telling Michael about watching SG-1 with her kids and how one woman was raising money for charity. Families and charities are often overlooked when writing about scifi conventions so I was happy to read that.

Thanks for letting us know about the article.

Oh, wait, there were fan shout outs about the show when Michael asked the audience about it. Heh, my bad.

Poor Paul! lol

Great article though, perhaps didn't quite get the full grasp of the female SG fan, only focusing on the "hot" men. We like the show for more than just that - though you can't deny the "hot" men are certainly a draw... :D

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It's more of a fluff-entertainment piece, so yes, they get to focus on the 'hot guys' (as in my avatar).;)

[identity profile] chayiana.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 10:34 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I really like this article. Of course, Stargate - and SG cons in particular - are not only about the sexiness of said actors, but I guess it's a huge part of it, isn't it? ^^

What I like is also that it gives a somewhat unclouded view of a SG con, a view from one who stands a bit outside of the craziness of our fandom.^^ And in the end, despite of that it comes to right conclusion ... that such a con leaves a warm and good feeling behind. And I think that's what it's all about.

I'm one of these *coughs* middle-aged women and I attended a lot of SG cons. And yeah, I *could* talk about wormhole physics, space travel, and alternate universes, but let's be honest, when you're queuing for a picture with Ben Browder or Joe Flanigan you just don't talk about these things! *lol*

And also, I totally loved the bits about what Michael Shanks and Rob Picardo said about SGU. Thanks so much guys! ^^ It's good to see that they also have problems with this new series. :D

Most articles, when they portray fans, they portray them as oddballs. Here, hey, yes, we women Do appreciate a fine looking guy.

That's sweet although Paul as Ringo? No way, he's too cute.

I'm highly amused that Gero's practically begging for fans to hang in there, especially after Mallozzi and Wright's temper tantrums.

Things will be changing, eh? Um... they're nearly halfway through airing the first season already, and the second half has already been scripted out and primary filming done, right? So while they can do some minor tweaking in post, they're not going to be able to make any drastic changes this season.

It wasn't until a casting notice for episode 16 appeared about 3 months ago that some fans really started complaining about where the train was heading. That's four episodes from the end of the season. TPTB don't even seem to get what they did wrong then, so while I'm sure it's been changed somewhat, their thought processes that got them there haven't changed.
