Stargate Atlantis: Actors talk about cancellation of show

UPDATED: */29 - David Nykl

I’ve been collecting the Stargate Atlantis actor’s various reactions to the cancellation news. Not all have spoken up (they’re not obligated to, and neither Joe nor Jason seem to be big computer users anyway).

Joe Flanigan

Nothing yet (he doesn’t have any web presence to speak of)

No more weekly McKay...sniffle...still, it's an actors life for me! ;-)

------------------------------------------

"I'm not ashamed to say, I love McKay. I think in the same way as fans, I'm going to miss him on a weekly basis. I've really had an awful lot of fun doing that part. ... McKay is definitely one of those characters that I hope is around in some way, shape, or form for a long time. Because he really is such a pleasure to play."

David said that, while it's easy to forget the "business" side of show business during the grind of filming every day, he actually likes the transitory nature of the industry.

"It's such a weird profession this way," he said. "There's a sense when you are doing it that it will go on forever ... but everyone knows that it won't. So there's that weird sort of duality the whole time, realizing that while it feels like this will go on forever it doesn't mean that that is necessarily going to be true."

"Who knows what can happen next? That really is the thing that excites me about this industry and this profession. You never know. Who knows where we could be next year? That's kind of a cool way to live your life, I've got to say. It's kind of the way I dreamt it would be. I think that it's the double-edged sword of being in this industry. It can change with one phone call. It's like winning the lottery -- every time you go in for an audition you're basically buying a ticket, and that ticket can take you anywhere and make you anything."

Rachel learned of the cancellation last week, not long before we did. She said, “Paul Mullie and Joe Mallozzi came into my trailer last week, and they broke the news to me. They came in, and their faces kind of said it all. I think, truthfully, we were all very shocked by the news. We all kind of figured that we’d be going for at least another season. You know, we’ve been here for five years, and have become like a family now. So it’s sad that we’re moving on, but, you know, onwards and upwards I guess. One has to be positive.” [lotts more at link below]

Paul McGillion

Paul was not in Vancouver when the decision came down. “Martin Gero gave me a call because I wasn’t on set. He called me up and broke the news to me. From all indications, I’d thought we were going to go a sixth season, but like Rachel said, five years is a great run of a show. Hopefully we entertained the fans with that. And apparently there may be some movies in the future, but we’ll see what happens with everybody. You move on from something, and hopefully you leave a bit of a legacy.” [more at link below]

David Nykl

[from Chicago Stargate Convention  8/22-24] "On Tuesday they announced it to the cast, and I wasn't there," Nykl said. "So I came in the next day and I was getting ready like I usually do, and there was this weird mood on set. So I asked what was going on. And it was actually Chuck who told me!

"It's a shock. It's like any big news. There's a process you go through. You're sad, you're angry. You're worried about what's going to happen. There's a sense that it's a real shame. The cast and crew have been together so long that it's a real blast doing the show."

"But you have to remember, we've been doing it for five years," Nykl added. "For a lot of shows in this day and age, that's a major accomplishment." And with Atlantis movies on the horizon, the actor stressed one thing: "Don't give up on us."

---------------------------------

Hard to believe - cancelled - after five years. Atlantis the series has been wrapped. It's all so sudden. Even when you know it can happen anytime, when it does you go: where did that come from? I barely have digested the news before the "what's next?" questions started up. What's next?
.
Well, frankly, I don't know. More work. More good roles. More ways to connect. I hope.
.
We move on..

Chuck Campbell

[from Chicago Stargate Convention  8/22-24]  Those sentiments were echoed by Campbell.

"Hang in with us," he said. "This new series will be of the same caliber as the other two. These writers know what they are doing. They can write good television. You've been with us this long. Stay with us for the ninth inning. It'll be worth it. And thank you for the five years you've given us."

All good things....

I’m writing to end the depressing stream of messages I’ve acquired in my inbox in the last week since the announcement that SGA is indeed canceled.  Yes, we’re a little disappointed that we won’t be seeing each other on a regular basis anymore, or eating Steve’s famous “crack sandwiches” every morning (I must now enter baconcheesymayo-y goodness rehab).  But at the same time, the SGA characters are in no way, shape, or form deceased.  This franchise is a strong one, and you can bet they’re not putting SGA to bed yet; I’ve heard buzzings of DVD movies as well as crossover appearances on Stargate: Universe, so rest assured that it ain’t over.  This just means more opportunities to invade other franchises and time to play other characters, and I’m quite excited to be “on the market” again.  I have no idea what’s in store for me, since I’m tied up for another month with Atlantis, but I’ll be sure to let you know when I do decide on my next project.  As for being “cursed”… not exactly the thing an actress needs to hear, like, Ever.  Besides, being truly cursed would have been having the show canceled last year, not this year… and I don’t believe in curses.  I believe in working on fantastic projects with great people, and I’ve been blessed to work on many, and will continue to do so if you keep watching!

So spread the word: life goes on for us actors.  We’re used to this.

P.S. and thanks.  I know you’re rooting for me.

Thanks for compiling these!

Some of us attended the Chicago con's Sunday brunch with David Nykl. When our table asked him what the mood was on set, he succinctly replied, "Crappy."

Ben Browder (also at the con) found out from Chris Judge a couple of days after the news first broke. It's funny how the grapevine works.

*hearts Paul and Rachel* Now I want to go meet the cast at a con more than EVER.

[identity profile] tashirasbubble.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for this WF - I was hoping to hear what everyone thinks..

I must say that I am waiting to hear what Joe says - he tends to be very honest, so his comments should be interesting.. Mind you, he may mind what he says at the moment so as not to ruin his chances on another job somewhere.

I wish them all the very best and will miss them terribly

[identity profile] alyssa22.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 11:05 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Joe at least gets to live with his family now. His wife and kids have basically spent a huge part of the past five years without him.

He has said some interesting things at cons. He's made it clear he wasn't happy with Paul and Torri being sacked. Said that at the LA con I went to.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 11:52 am (UTC)(link)
Well, hate to say it, but Nykl's response sounds more realistic. We fans are allowed to be more candid , as it won't affect future job opportunities. I can't see how ANYBODY could be happy with the news, except maybe brad Wright and some Skiffy/MGM execs.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
me too!

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
I hope someone can interview him about it. I think his only plus that he might state is 'no more commuting back to the States.' I'd love to see him get another lead in a show, but it wouldn't be ironic if he audition sin LA and it's filmed in Canada ;)

[identity profile] chensuu.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, this is just...wow. The more I read the crazier it makes me. From Rachel and Paul's response it seems the cast kind of had the same vibe the fans did, ratings are up, storylines are good, woo hoo, one more season!

And while I firmly believe Mallozzi and Co. were clueless, I can't shake the feeling that Brad Wright knew this was happening all along. He seemed way too prepared for my liking. Sorry, but I'm still bitter.

[identity profile] nikomaria.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
First of all Thanks for putting it together.

Reading about the cast reaction to the cancellation makes me sad all over again.

From reading the interviews (pre cancellation) it looked to me that the cast was pretty sure that they would get a sixth season. That was one of the reason that despite JM's warnings (guess I'm now grateful for the heads up) I had still some hope that we would get at least another season. :(

And I'm really, really bitter that the person who created SGA is the one responsible (well he and MGM/Skiffy) for ending it.

Sorry for the rant.

aww I hope that doesn't mean someone said to Staite she was cursed, that's mean :(

oh team

another example of what a crappy decision was made to cancel the show

[identity profile] inalaska2004.livejournal.com 2008-08-28 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
they cancel the show and then it gets nominated for awards

Stargate Atlantis has been nominated for four trophies in the 23rd Annual Gemini Awards.

The nominations for Atlantis are for Season Four:

* Best Writing in a Dramatic Series: Alan McCullough for “Tabula Rasa”
* Best Achievement in Make-Up: Todd Masters, Leah Ehman for “The Last Man”
* Best Visual Effects: Mark Savela, Marco Checa Garcia, Sebastian Greece, Shannon Gurney, Paul Hegg, Brandon Hines, Jesus Lavin, Nikolas Slotiuk, Toby Taplin, Ray Van Steenwyk for “Adrift”
* Best Performance by an Actress in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role: Jewel Staite for “Missing”

Re: another example of what a crappy decision was made to cancel the show

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-08-28 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I must admit, TPTB have crappy timing when they do stuff like this. I remember when the musical score got an Emmy nod, they hacked it down to 8 seconds, but then restored it.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-08-28 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Now I know Carter had the 'black widow curse', but hopefully if someone said Jewel was cursed, it was said in jest. We did that with a coworker who blithely said, "gee, the last two companies I worked for got sold and we got laid off." so when that did happen to all of us, we pointed out finger said said "your fault!" but very humorously.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-08-28 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, doesn't sound like the cast had any idea...

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-08-28 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I get the impression BW was involved in it. JM, not so much, at least judging from some of his comments.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-08-28 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
HOpefully they said 'cursed' in jest, but don't know where it was said (and yeah, fans will say anything).

[identity profile] jaekayelle.livejournal.com 2008-08-28 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, the nature of an actor's job is rather transitory, but SGA was a steady job which they all need. All of them have families to support. No one likes the unknown. Not knowing if they'll ever have a weekly income again... Of course, they are a talented bunch but that means diddly in the industry. Lots of talented folks not working.

Sorry to be such a downer, but I like these people -- as much as I feel I know them through the show -- and I worry about them.

It has been argued that SGA was cancelled due to production costs and actor's salaries, but they stuck with SG-1 long after that became an issue. Nope. Sounds like Sci Fi and possibly Wright just wanted to play with their new toy and don't care that they're messing with lives, or care what their audience thinks or feels. From what I can tell of Sci Fi they should stick with a relatively sure thing, because they don't have much else going for them. Canada's equivalent is SPACE and it's wall to wall SF series. Sure, mostly imports but still... No wrestling, or reality shows or whatever the heck Sci Fi airs. Geez. :(

/rant :( :(

Good attitudes

[identity profile] mcsheplovers.livejournal.com 2008-08-28 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounds like they all have reacted in the same manner. They're saddened about not working together anymore, but realistically, they knew this job wouldn't last forever. Rachel, David and Jason all just started families, and I know they will miss the steady paycheck----as will JF and his brood. But they all seem hopeful that more work will be coming down the road and I wish them the best of luck. I like David's comment about how it sucks that the show was cancelled, but that he wouldn't trade acting for anything in the world. "It's an actor's life for me!"

It makes me very sad. They were all so upbeat during their talk at Comic Con.

Re: Good attitudes

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Although I do understand the mood when the news was broken was pretty bad (unless you hate your job, losing it sucks big time).

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
And while they were upbeat, the suits were busy getting ready to drop the axe, no doubt :(

[identity profile] roxy-palace.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad to see other people have been getting this feeling. It's been plaguing me since the news broke.

And it's obscene the way Wright's been crowing over the new show while this cast of 10-15 actors and crew of god knows how many are out on their ears.

Mallozzi said in his blog the other day that he wants everyone to keep watching the show and get the final ratings up as high as possible to make 'someone' regret the decision. I get the feeling we all know who he was talking about.

[identity profile] veronicasaether.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
What would I do without my regular wraithfodder updates? Great job with these, and thanks! :)

Hello

[identity profile] vandacosta.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello, I am Vanda and I'm from Portugal. I will be honest, I have seen the series and loved all, I'm sorry that it did not pass on Portuguese television, they do not know what they lose ... but I was sad to learn that the producers of the serie also do not know what they are doing canceling the serie. .. good luck for the actors (they are all fantastic)and I hope to see the film.
Excuse my bad English, but I do not speak much english
I would like to receive some information about the series can be?
thanks

Hey, Do you think my letter I sent got there? I had the correct address but instead of Pegasus Productions, I put Stargate Atlantis.

Let me know what you think. It is probably too late to send another.

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see why it wouldn't. Stargate's been there forever...

im just so sad that theres only three episode left of sheppard and company!!! :( :( has any of you seen the interview that joe did when the cancellation took place he looked like he wanted to cry it was very touching.

Where is that interview located? I'd love to see it.
