To be fair, yes, I think it was intended that he care, as far as scripting goes. Unfortunately, thanks to Joe Flanigan's inability to act his way out of a paper bag, it really didn't come across like he cared. It came across like the obligatory "oh, yeah, she's gone, I'm supposed to say we need to go after her," but with absolutely no sense of real emotion behind it. :(
