I think the writers/whoever figured, eh, fans aren't going to notice the defib pads are in the wrong place.... but one can surmise they were just shocking him to get the critter out, although hmm, would the entity be in the abdomen? Oh oh, my brain hurts. You'd think if the entity could manipulate the mind it would be in the brain, and shocks to the head would do damage...
