Lantean life signs detectors only need the gene to activate them, then they stay switched on until someone deactivates them (something that bugged me in another episode)
Sheppard does have bruising/swelling around his eye, though it looks to be in the "it hasn't come out yet" stage. Sadly, I didn't stare at his mouth long enough to notice split lips and whatnot ;)
I was wondering about the radiation, and all I can think of is the lights on their armbands seemed to be flashing orange (?) as a midway increase, and he caved before it got too dangerous.
