My mom's family is Eastern European so we have a couple New Year's superstitions we follow - you're supposed to have pork and cabbage (sourkraut) for New Year's Day for a year of money, good health and luck. Cabbage represents money and you should have pork (or something from a pig) because pigs uproot things - chicken is a real no-no because chickens scratch for a living and if you eat chicken on the first day of the new year, you'll have money problems (My mom maintains the year we didn't do pork and cabbage all sorts of bad things happened). You're also supposed to hold silver in your hand at midnight for prosperity in the comming year. I figure it never hurts...
