Jason Momoa Confirmed in HBO’s A Game of Thrones
October 17, 2009 by Jay Tomio

Earlier today I was manning my twitter station and saw Winter is Coming pointing to a report by a con goer attending Armageddon Expo who said that they heard actor Jason Momoa state that he would be taking on the role of Drogo in the HBO adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones. Being a fan of the series and knowing how much people like confirmation when it comes to projects that they love, I checked up on this and can now report that HBO has confirmed to me that this report (and Momoa’s statements) were both the truth (not that we had any reason to doubt!) and official.

The 'Games' afoot: HBO's 'Game of Thrones' gears up

UPDATE 2 Oct. 17: HBO has confirmed the casting of Momoa as Khal Drogo.

UPDATE 3 Oct. 17: I just want to give full credit for the breaking of the Momoa story to ABitLikeTrying on Twitter, who tweeted the news about his casting from a convention Oct. 16. She also noted that Momoa will have a nude scene and said that the actor has hired a trainer to see about bulking up for the role.

Joe Flanigan interview

EXCERPT:

JF: Well, I did speak with somebody specifically at MGM about that and they said, "The SG-1 movies did well." And that SyFy wanted to be part of this and so what they tried to do is they did it with Caprica. And I think we sold something on the tune of 500,000 units and Caprica only sold 35,000 units. And MGM ...

GW: Really? Ark of Truth and Continuum totaled?

JF: I think so. MGM was reading that as a disastrous downturn in the DVD market. But I was telling them I don't think that's a good economic model at all. Because I don't think Caprica has any brand recognition like Stargate does. Nor do I think they have an existing fan base like Stargate does.

So, I urge them to reconsider that model because I don't think that's an accurate model of the DVD market. There may be a 15 to 20 percent drop in sales because of what's going on, but it's not going to be anywhere close to that. But that's the model they're looking at. So the way they see it, I think, is not good. Now, if the new show comes out and does well ... I don't know how that would affect the movies.
