Ah, I think I get it. MGM must be bleeding money somehow (those crappy TV movies, perhaps?), and they aren't getting enough by simply airing the show and the season box sets. A movie, however, cuts production costs, and they'll earn more.
Why can't they just take a hiatus like Doctor Who will? They'll have the movie or two to last us a year, and then they can save up some cash for the next season.
Sci-Fi always has sucked, though. And that's a sci-fi show for you-- DW and SG1 aside, how often have they actually lasted for more than five years?
I've heard there's to be a supposed new spin-off of some kind. :/ I wonder how they'll wing that, if at all.
