BRIDGE CONTRACT: Heavy machines are smashing the Stargate Atlantis TV series' set in Bridge Studios' 40,000-square-foot effects stage. That's the largest of eight movie-shooting facilities in almost constant use on the six-hectare complex at Boundary-off-Second Avenue, Burnaby. The studio's website claims it's the largest in North America.

But Bridge Studios general manager Ron Hryniuk -- say Her-nik -- isn't sorry to say goodbye to a show that produced some 100 episodes on six of his sound stages, as well as twice that number for the predecessor Stargate SG-1 series. That's because the SCI FI Channel and MGM Television recently announced the launch of a new "science faction" series called Stargate Universe.

"Its great news. Fantastic," Hryniuk said of a show that will premiere as a two-hour movie on SCI FI and become a weekly one-hour series next summer.

In a press release Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis co-creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper said Stargate Universe "will break new ground in relationships between mostly young and desperate explorers, thrust together and far from home."

**This sucks***

UPDATE: See next post - http://wraithfodder.livejournal.com/249781.html - for update. NOT all sets, PHew phew phew.

They're destroying everything? What are they going to use for the movie? Or perhaps that's going to be history, too...

What happened to keeping the sets for the movie? The movie is green lighted by SciFi and MGM isn't it? Articles mentioned it just recently together with the SG1 Movie.

Maybe they are just smashing parts of the set, that they don't need anymore?

Either way, I agree this sucks!

WTF?!?!?! So the movie will be set... let me guess, in the woods/in a village full of buxom women/on a spaceship? Seriously rolling my eyes in disbelief about how the poor cousin of SG1 gets treated.

My word, they really did hate SGA, didn't they? Do they plan on filming the movie in the back woods of Vancouver?

Like I wasn't angry enough already this morning. BAH!

To be honest, I've been skeptical about an SGA movie ever since the announcements started flooding in about cancellation then SGU hot on its heels. (In other words, I'll believe it when I see it.) And once I heard Mallozzi was writing it, I sort of lost interest anyhow... We'll see how it all pans out.

But destroying *Atlantis*? There are no words. Hearing that hurts as much as hearing about the cancellation.

They said they were keeping the Gaterooms for both series, though... Man, if I'd bought set tour tickets and found that there was hardly anything to see, I'd be pissed.

I really wish they'd lay off the sunshine and roses act about SGU. Yes, they're happy to do the new show, but the symbolism of saying 'HEY GUYS THIS IS *AWESOME* THAT WE ARE DESTROYING THESE, BECAUSE WE'RE GOING TO MAKE A *NEW* SHOW!! NO ONE CARES ABOUT ATLANTIS!'

The show isn't even off the air yet, guys. Be respectful!

ps. I hope the actors snagged some loot from the sets. fdkjsalfdjslaf

Pretty much everyone else has already said it, but how the hell are they supposed to do a movie without a set? And didn't they originally say they were looking in to doing more than one? Wouldn't you think there would be the possibility of reusing one of the existing sets, if for cost reasons if nothing else? Even for SG: Crapfest?

Theory: They are attempting to destroy any hint of Teh Gay to make sure their new show is Super Het. Come on, they tried to make SGA a het-fest and failed miserably, maybe they honestly think this is the only way to destroy The Curse of the Why-Does-Everything-We-Write-Become-Slash? Because otherwise, I've got nothing other than them just being asses, which is still a distinct possibility.

So, when they said the movies were green lite, did they just mean, maybe, kinda, if we're not washing our hair tomorrow?

*sigh*

This makes me so sad.

WTF? Oh that's......not right. Surely, as everyone else has said, they need the sets for the movie? Leads me to believe that they aren't going to do one or.......shudderrs.....that our SGA peeps will be in the SG1 movie and that would suck big time!

Oh, that makes me sad :(

I believe Joe Mallozzi said they would be breaking down the village set and some other peripheral sets but that the main SGA set would remain for the time being, much as the SGC is still in one piece so I'm not going to get too hysterical about this.

This is just the worst news ever! How *can* they??!
I wasn't so enthusiastic about the movie(s) anyway, because I just prefer the series format for this genre, but this is undignified. And wrong. And the glee they show doing it! Did BW or whoever *pay* them to gloat?!

And I guess this really is the last straw in disrespecting Atlantis' fans. We really need to just hold on to the joy of the episodes we have left.

You just can't imagine how p***ed I am.

I am just sitting in Vernon, BC, flied here yesterday. Its my first time in Canada and my first time outside Europe at all. The idea of getting here grew out of my wish to visit a filming site of a show I love. During the time I prepared this stay here (a colleague told me about a job training I am now attending, I rented a car to go to Vancouver in 2 weeks, got a hotel there etc.pp.) they cancelled Atlantis and now the sets were destroyed YESTERDAY?

Is there any possibility how this can get worse? Oh, yes, they might tell, that there won't be any movie at all anymore and that SGU also didn't make it.

Byebye beautiful.

And now I try to not think about this too much. Because I don't want to ruin my stay here.

nialla: (Farscape - That's Really Big)
From: [personal profile] nialla
I just had a thought from my Farscape days...

When the show was canceled, they quickly started striking the sets. I think Sci Fi wanted it down before they announced the cancelation, because they're utter bastards and wanted to make it even more difficult for a revival to happen. Too bad for them one of TPTB and Ben Browder told fans directly. [hearts Ben]

But a lot of the major pieces were put into storage, in case they revived the show. When they did the miniseries, those pieces were pulled out and used, but I think they had to recreate some things, such as Moya's hallways.

I'm wondering if they're keeping some of the major sets (even if it's in pieces), like they kept the SGC set after SG-1 was canceled because it could be used in SGA, SG-1 movies, etc.

Seriously sad news. :( I'm holding out hope that they've saved some pieces of the set and are putting them in storage. Though this article makes it look very bleak. :S

The Solutions Blog says that this is the Medieval village set on one of the larger FX stages. They have to make room for SGU somewhere and, since this set has been seen over and over, it is the first to go. I don't think the gaterooms and other essential interior setups are being torn down.

Yeah, tearing down the sets with heavy machinery... Now that the sets are destroyed, wonder how they will make the so called movie they threw out there to appease us fans.

oh thanks, I didn't really had to know about that. :-(

From: [identity profile] rasmizar.livejournal.com
As others have pointed out, I think (hope?) it's only part of the set that's being destroyed...

What I don't get is the attitude - I understand that TPTB/crew/people involved in the making in general are happy with the start of a new series, because it means they have a job for the next couple of years *cough*or less*cough*.
But how can a normal human being not be sad, or at least a little bit melancholy, when a show they worked for is over after 5 years? :-(
So either they really hated SGA, or they don't talk about their real feelings (maybe no unhappy thoughts should stain the SGU PR or whatever), and instead come across as cold and unfeeling. Either way, I don't get it. Gah.

They only took down the effects stage - that's where they kept the wraith and village sets. Joe M. had said previously that that sound stage would be used for SGU. The main SGA set is still standing.

Date: 2008-10-02 05:57 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] arlessiar.livejournal.com
I wouldn't get too upset about this - Joe Mallozzi is still talking about the SGA movie in his blog, and he also announced weeks ago that a few but not all of the sets would be destroyed. They wanted to destroy the village set and other not vital sets (they simply need the free space for the new series (not that I support that show) and will probably not use these sets anymore anyway). I'm sure they'll keep most parts of the big Atlantis main set. Don't think this means that there'll be no movie. Don't worry too much, folks, at least not yet.

I find it sad and pathetic that they are thinking that the new show will go anywhere. It's going to be a travesty.

I read some of the comments after reading you post, and although at first my reaction was : So that means the movie's off too then ? (points at self : see the look of non-surprise, and yet utter disappointment), now I see that they may (may, not sure, but may) have kept the main part of Atlantis (as in maybe the gate room and some of the labs ? The inside of a puddljumper ? of a Wraith hive ?), so there might still be hope for a movie.

Nevertheless, the way the whole SGA affair has been treated by TPTB has been nothing short of insulting and heartbreaking since the first announcement. There are ways to tell your fans that you're cancelling a show without repeatedly hitting them in the face at the same time. I'm terribly disappointed at them.

Thank you though, you get all the complaining without batting an eye because you're willing to be the bad news bearer, so here are some hugs for you {{{HUGS}}}.
