I am in lock step with you and Linzi on this thread. I hate that Sheppard, as well as Ronon and Teyla, have become afterthoughts this season. Joe F. has done more with less than anyone on that set. Rodney/Hewlett was handed all the meaty, emotional scripts. Rodney got to experience all kinds of situations and emotions. Sheppard basically got the scripts for shooting and action, which I don't mind, but he didn't get to show a whole lot of emotion or character growth. It is only Joe Flanigan's nuanced portrayal of Sheppard, the facial expressions and his smoldering eyes that gave so much more depth to the character than what the writers gave him. That is shoddy treatment for the leading man.
Your conversation regarding Joe F. having to fight for Sheppard has me speculating on something David Hewlett said. I don't remember where this came from, will have to look. David Hewlett said that Joe Flanigan wanted some kind of romantic arc for Sheppard and then they came into this year and Rodney was going to get that kind of storyline. I wonder if this was some kind of slap in the face to Joe F. and he just threw his hands up and quit fighting. Coincidentally, this year Joe Mallozzi has pointedly not mentioned Joe Flanigan and not much of anything about the Sheppard character either, unless it some kind of smart ass, snide remark or dig. I might be reading too much into this or being paranoid, but it makes me wonder. Also, wonder how my beloved show got turned into Martin Gero's fantasies come true through his Marty and Mary Sue. When did Sheppard, Teyla and Ronon get turned into background players? Why was there no adult to rein in the out of control hormonal teenage writers for this arc? *sigh* I want my show back. I want to see my team and its leader - John Sheppard.
