Personally, I think this is a mistake for poor Robert Caryle. DOCTOR WHO is going to be remembered far past SGU :(

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3ia42e757920d927798a19726f013538af

an excerpt:

"Described as edgier, darker and younger-skewing than its predecessors, "SGU" follows a group of soldiers, scientists and civilians left to fend for themselves when forced through a Stargate after their hidden base comes under attack. The survivors, who emerge aboard an ancient ship missing in the far reaches of space, are led by Dr. David Rush (Carlyle), who works to unlock the ship's mysteries and return the group home but also might have ulterior motives.

The network had said it was looking to cast a well-known actor as Rush and fresh faces to play the rest of the ship's crew.

"Robert Carlyle brings a depth, intelligence and complexity to his roles, which will fit perfectly with the fresh, new reinvention of this franchise," Sci Fi original-programming chief Mark Stern said.

I like Carlyle, but considering the same folk who penned the past Stargates are going to pen this, I don't expect any fresh new plots. And wow, there's Skiffy pushing the "fresh" crap, like they always do with all their programming and cast changes. I get the idea somewhere at Skiffy used to market laundry detergent...

So, what's everybody's opinion? I like Carlyle, but don't know if he'll be enough for me to watch the show.

I like Robert Carlyle in the things I've seen him in. But as a SG character? I just don't see it.

I suppose it's easier to see since he's going to be a doctor, not a military man. But I still find myself cringing.

OMG!! I just can't believe it - I thing my brain just shorted out ot something! I just can't imagine Robert Carlyle on Stargate! Oo Poor him - you can only hope that the series will be short-lived, otherwise this will be the end of his career... ;-)

He did some great work but a lot of strange movies too. Anybody knows "The 51st state" with Samuel L. Jackson? Weirdest movie I've ever seen... *gg* ^^

But thanks for the news!

Why did RC sign up for this - is he so desperate for work/money? While I like him, this casting decision rather makes me question RC's judgement than watch SGU.
My guess is his character's going to be killed in one of the first eps. a) I don't see an actor like RC doing a whole season of a show like this, b) I don't see SGU's TBTB having the money to pay an actor of RC's caliber for a whole season, c) the situation reminds me of Robert Patrick/Sumner on SGA - if I remember right, there was the same reasoning of having a well known (genre) actor to get the show running...

I now have a reason to watch! Honestly, I wasn't even going to give it a chance based on the casting sheet (which had no character like this on it, intersetingly enough), but I think he's phenomenal. If he brings up the caliber of the writing at the same time, I'm all for it. I don't want dark, but we could definitely use a more *real people* aspect, and he's perfect for that. No one plays a flawed, real human being better than Carlyle. I love my SGA folks, but they were hindered by the writer's inability to real play out the relationships. I think Carlyle will force them to get better. So, yay! Good for Stargate!

If the writers are bad, why should they get better with another actor ?
If the writers had been limited by their previous team of actors, I would understand your reasoning, but it was rather the other way around. the writers were never able to use the full potential of their acting team 99% of the time.
I doubt they'll do any better in SGU given that it's going to be the exact same team of writers.

As Obama said : you can put lipstick on a pig, it's still going to be a pig (in this case, Carlyle being the lipstick).

I agree that Carlyle is a very good actor, but... we're still stuck with the same writers, the ones who are rewriting their old scripts and copying movies with the lame "homage" reasoning. Somehow, I don't think the writers will be any better than before, even with Carlyle there. :(

Hopefully it'll be better than the obnoxious doctor on SGA.

No matter how beautiful Kaylee is... freakin' Beckett was the man, man!

RC is fantastic. i have seen him in soo many things. loved him in Hamish Macbeth, the scottish constable tv series from the long running book series. he does humor really well. and i looked him up on IMDB and he has like 3 movies coming out in the next year. so he cant be desperate for work, right? he is the kind of actor who can change to the role and i found him quite good looking in the Macbeth series. but he doesnt match the RDA of JF style of tall, dark and handsome type. he's kind of petite? lean, thin..more like Zelenka. i wonder what accent he'll do. i thought the lead was going to be american.
and yes, born in 61 makes him older than me. so older actors appeal to younger audiences? what, is he going to be the Dad to all the other people on board? and isnt his name supposed to be Col Younger? hahaha. lame.

I'm sure all the younger ones will be cast out of Dawson's Creek style ;)

He gave up Doctor Who for this?!? Wow.

Caryle was brilliant in Trainspotting, Okay in the Full Monty and really, really awful in some Made for TV English disaster movie. If he's a junkie in this it could be great. :)

I waivered for a second on whether to now watch, but I think you're right, weighing everything else up it's still a no.

We don't know if he gave up WHO; it's all rumors over in the UK, but I think he would have been great as a WHO! :)

I will at least give the Pilot a try but my expectations are incredibly low at this point since S5 has been a bit of a letdown. I will wash it down with a S1-S4 marathon.

Robert Carlyle is one of my all-time favourite actors...I'd happily watch him in anything!

It means it must be quite good, otherwise he'd have turned it down

Well, considering maybe only the pilot is written? It's hard to tell, but it must have been a good financial deal to get him to commit to a series in another country.

Robert Carlyle? An actor I actually already know? I have seen him in Trainspotting and The full monty. He is creepy to me. And he is not pretty. And old. I thought they were going for young actors?

Well, I have to see the pilot, and then I decide whether I will keep watching it.

Looking back at older articles, it said "mostly young cast" so this is one 'old guy' ;) and the Colonel, I'm sure, will be late 30s/early 40s. I'll check out the pilot, but past that, don't know..

From: [identity profile] the-scary-kitty.livejournal.com
I don't even know who the guy is, so I had to look him up.

*headdesk* Gee, wasn't the token grizzled old guy supposed to be the "veteran soldier" character? Guess they changed that one...

The more I hear about SGU, the more it sounds like it's gonna be the mother of all trainwrecks.

Date: 2008-12-16 01:31 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com
Maybe the 'grizzled old guy' will be 35 years old?

Well, crap. Now I have to at least watch the pilot. It'll be up to the show whether or not I watch more than that, much like Jamie Bamber and Callum Keith Rennie got me to watch the pilot of Battlestar Galactica, but not even for them could I suffer through that show every week.

I'd much rather see Robert Carlyle in something else, but if this is what he's doing... Hopefully, it'll get canceled before it does too much damage to his career.

I really like CKR as well, but I just couldn't sit through BSG to watch him, so I bought the DUE SOUTH DVD set instead ;)

I don't even know the name let alone the face. Don't know that he is a big enough name to draw that many new people in, let alone the younger demographic TPTB are after. Have to wonder what they're thinking as this guy is older than Joe Flanigan and David Hewlett and not anywhere as hot. Doesn't do anything for me - still won't be watching.

Date: 2008-12-16 11:43 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com
I think the *young* folk are the ones who be cast to be 'hot' ;) Sad that TPTB don't realize that over 30 doesn't mean dead ...

From: [identity profile] flingslass.livejournal.com
Robert Carlyle is a fine actor, he was quirky in Hamish MacBeth and I'm not worried about his ability. He does however like to do dark, mysterious characters.
It is TPTB that I'm still worried about. How much more of a mess can they make?

Date: 2008-12-16 11:42 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com
Carylye: Good.
TPTB: can they *really* do something new??

WOW.
i am ..SO... stunned ,Robert Carlyle!?

He is very well known here in the Uk and excepting the bond movie he did (which was bleuh)he really is an excellent, natural actor.

I will give SGU a shot
1.because of him and
2.*just* because anything he is in will make any other actor facing him raise their game one hundreth fold

-and maybe thats a good thing...

*hopes furiously with fingers and toes crossed*

I already don't like him. I don't even know him in anything I have seen. He is not what I would call a leading man either! Then again, I don't plan to watch this crap anyway!

I can only assume some SciFi exec has compromising pictures of Mr. Carlyle.

Edgier and younger invariably = complete trash

I'm not sure how the same writers are going to write 'younger' ;)
