Well, I've visited the USA three times in total, but I have to admit that there are only 2 things visible from the ocean that I would recognize, one, obviously, would be the Golden Gate Bridge, the second is The Statue of Liberty.... and meaning no offence the Gate is prettier to look at. (It's nice to travel across, too. :) )
I did consider ST:IV and also the fact that part of the bridge was built in the building that now houses their studios... so it could be these were the deciding factors.
