Oh, there is effort to cast women on sci fi shows. After all, they have to see how tight they can squeeze the spandex. Regrettably, even when the female character is intelligent, 9 times out of 10 they are squeezed into an outfit (Teyla only seemed to get rid of the midrif baring tops once the actress became pregnant). Trek was notorious for that (7 of 9, and the Vulcan, er, uh, played by Jolene Blalock). Carter was perhaps the only realstic female in scifi I've seen as they didn't shrink her uniform to fit her! ;) Weir was good, but yes, the writing for her was, gah... the actress gave her best.
