Yet as much as I like Ed, I love Greg even more. He always has an answer, something to say, and while I imagine that that could get old very fast, it doesn't. Not with Greg because while he confides the least in people, I tend to see him as the most transparent. At least to the audience. He's the ultimate character foil in a way, while at the same time not being boring or obnoxiously superior.
I don't know if I'm expressing this in any understandable manner, but he's not just the moral center of the show, he's what the show comes back to stay grounded or to gain perspective. When a situation escalates or another character losing control, Greg brings it back. Which is why I find the times when his character is lost to be not necessarily the most dramatic, but definitely some of the most startling. What happens to everyone else if something happens to Greg?
