They can't let SGU get too dark because they will lose audience - the ones who watched SG1 and SGA. Granted, neither was heavy-duty drama, but it was durable in syndication, a family could sit down and watch. Given what I read in Carlyle's interview, SGU is going to be dark in theme. If it goes too dark, and they get too dependent on arcs, and try too hard to copy BSG, it'll be a show I might tape and watch in a marathon, but not a "must see watch live" kind of show.
