I really like Joe Flanigan. Really, I do. But. But... $500 (opening bid) for cocktails with him? And this isn't you and him, it's you and other fans, so if one is really obsessive, you've paid $500 to be a doormat...

From an email

Starting at $500 and you can put it on a payment plan! But hey, you get *snacks*. The whole ala carte pricing of this con would kill me. I mean the gold ticket is something like $500, then if you want set tours, more, and photo ops, and autographs and well, best wishes to those who can afford this. I only would hope they'd post about it on the web for the rest of us to live vicariously through them...

Last year was FABULOUS and I could not recommend it enough. The only drawback was waiting in line to get photo op pictures was in a narrow hallway with not much ventilation, but the guests I ended up getting pictures with (David and Kate Hewlett and Jewel Staite) were so gracious that it was completely, utterly worth it.

Yeah, they did it at Chevron, though in that case it was up to 12 people in a room with Joe - but you only paid the bid price for the 12th highest bid (ie if the top bid was £500 but the 12th bid was £300, everyone paid £300). I'm not sure if that's the same at Creation Con or not. And no idea where the money went, but as I didn't hear mention of a charity I'm assuming it went to the con people.

I can't tell you how much the prices were for the 'guest encounter' (which they used to call 'intimate encounter' until someone pointed out the, erm, problems with that title!! *g*) with Joe or Jason (I heard rumours of £300 for Joe, but am not sure that was true, it may have been higher). Poor Alexis Cruz's went for £6 and only about 5 people...

At £78 for standard (includes one free autograph for up to 6 guests, plus other things); £135 for silver (add a free photo with each guest, plus other things) £195 for gold (add an exclusive drinks reception with the guests on Friday evening, plus other things) and even taking into account the exchange rate, still cheaper than Creation Con!

Extra autographs and photos with guests were £10 for all except Joe, who was £15. Oh, and they gave you gorgeous photos for free to get signed!

Some of the guests joined the fans at the evening parties, and Colin Cunnigham seemed to be everywhere I looked throughout the days (well, when not signing etc), and was happy to show kids magic tricks! Wish I had even half his energy!!

Ok I will confess, if I had the money, I'd def. be thinking about spending it ... but I would feel "odd". I am sure this will end up getting up in the thousands.

Do you think the actors feel odd during these things? I wonder what actually goes through their heads. I am more interested in knowing that.

It's Creationnet. They're all about making as much profit as possible; not much about fan satisfaction.

Wow, that's a lot of money for snacks and maybe an hour or so with him. I agree that a sit down dinner would be more appropriate. I'm sure he's not making much money for it. I'm surprised that he's even doing it. I'd get all embarrassed anyway, so I'd never put the money down.

If I didn't have student loans and about a billion other bills right now.. I'd do it!! Only I'd try to play it cool, like I'm not an obsessed fan. Only he'd know what I shelled out for the time with him (let's face it.. cocktails and snacks aren't that expensive.) So I'd have no choice, but to be that obsessive fan.. secretly praying inside he'd say "we should talk more, would you like to come to my room?" Now that's comedy!! :D

He is a popular boy! If people have the money to spend on that, go for it! Personally, I can't spend money like that, as much as I would like to have a couple drinks with him. Love the Flan.

True. and wow, yes, I'd love to spend some time with teh Flan, but not with 8 other fans crowding in, especially for the escalating price tag.

LOL. I think I know who that is...and if it is who I think it is, he's not exactly quiet about his loathing of Cretin Con.

I wonder if the actors think... "this will pay for a whole semester of junior's first year in college" ;)

Lets see... pay well over $500 so the Flan can watch me turn red, then purple, then my bones dissolve and I gradually turn into a pile of happy goo in his presence and make him realize this type of up-close "fan encounter" is waaaaaaay too dangerous to do again in the future? Yeah ok no.

I would totally do it if I win the lottery but then if I have that much money, I'd host my own SGA convention and donate everything to the actors' favorite charities. ;)

well, if I won powerball (since lotto really isn't all that much in today's market), I'd do a small, cozy con, pay the cast well, and yup, make sizeable donations to their charities. Ah, to dream...

See once again this year I am going to Vancouver but its for the "Pre-Con" festivities(basically I'm too poor to afford the whole con so I'm going up next Thursday for one night).

I'll bug my friends about doing their Con reports(a couple are going Gold, and some preferred) while I'm there.

I personally wouldn't pay $500+ for dinner with the Flan especially where they use the word 'lubricate' in their emails.

$500! Wow as a starting bid! that is steep!

I was lucky enough to go to both Jason and Joe's Guest Encounters at Chevron and can guarantee that they are both worth chatting to in a smaller environment...Jason is hilarious and Joe is one of the most intelligent, funny and interesting people I have had the pleasure to talk to...but $500 as a starting point - phew! That would have put me out at Chevron if they had done that.

Good luck to whoever gets it, at that price - I really hope they have fun.

Sure as heck hope it is fun for that price, which last I looked was $550. Oops, it's now $610!

hee hee I hope it's along those lines and not a silent scream in their heads going "OMG!! What the heck did I sign up for?????"

I hope there are some good reports out of this con. Can't wait!

Oh I was also thinking for $500, can we have Joe serve the cocktail? *vbg*

would they refund the money if he has to cancel?
for some reason i'm reminded of some con last year (i think it was) where some people paid a bunch of money to have lunch somewhere with come of the cast of sg-1 (michael shanks & his wife?) only to have a surprise sneak peak of the latest sg-1 movie & sandwiches on the bus back. but at least michael & his wife went back on the bus with them.

They won't refund your main ticket, but if you bought a ticket for say, $800 for the drink, I sure as heck hope they would.

*waves to darsynia and watcher* Shore Leave was awesome(yeah...I know...David's most unfavorite word) But, for me it had to do with the fantastic people I met and David and Kate who were uber gracious and wonderful to the fans!

I would love to go again this year....but as I'm bending over for Cretin con... *sigh* and am going to Dragoncon, I am broke for any other cons this year.

I HATE Cretin con too. The only reason I'm spending the money is because I want the set tour and they are having Joe, Amanda and Paul who (with David) are my favorite of the SG peeps. I love the rest too....just slightly less. *grins*

It just ticks me off every time they send one of these ebay things and sell a tiny bit of time with one of the actors and 8 other people for $500+. It's now up to $610 btw. *shakes head*

Seriously...it would be nice to know how much the actors get paid to go to a con. If I won the lottery I would start my own dang con and it would be fan run and fan oriented.

Thanks for your post Wraithfodder! It was what most of us are thinking!

I hope there are reports. One thing I've noticed about the vancouver cons is that vERY few fans bother to write up anything. I figure people just don't want to spend the time :(

I mean if I didn't have bills and responsibilities, etc. and had more money, sure I"d love to do this con but well, reality takes precedence. Don't think the tax collector would go "well, we're sorry you blew what you owe us on a con, but you OWE us." ;)

Re: Conventions

It really is a ridiculously expensive con. I got a deal on airfare for $398. I'm in Florida and usually it's $550 for cheap airfare to Vancouver. I didn't get the least expensive hotel room as I booked late so I think it will be $707 when converted to US...but I'm spitting that.

And, the tickets are fricking ridiculous at $569 for gold and $499 for preferred.

So just for tickets, hotel and airfare you are talking $1321.00!!! Compare that to $614.00 for tickets, hotel and air for DragonCon.

*sigh* Yeah...Cretin sucks. And, I'm so bending over for them... *evil grin*

BTW...Amanda's little get together went for $901.50 a person!!! Whoa!

I really, really like Joe, but heck, I couldn't justify spending $1K for, what? maybe an hour, along with 8 other folk I probably wouldn't know. I mean, would have been cheaper to bid on a set visit from the sounds of it! ;)

You have to scroll down a bit and then you see Amanda's pic to the left and you can click on bidders list.
