Um...it's not a matter of watching it as if it's an AU. It *is* an AU.
From the second the Romulans came through the rift and engaged the Kelvyn, things shifted, and the entirety of what followed is an alternate universe. The only way they could have saved this, and even *tried* to call it non-AU is if they'd reset after the Romulan ship was destroyed.
I absolutely loved this -- by setting it as an AU, Abrams & Co can make more movies, and not have to worry about stepping all over canon in the way that ENT sometimes did -- we can have *new* adventures while they're all still young!
