I like Jewel Staite very much, and agree that they've screwed around with Beckett too much, but...yeah. This keeps sound like a worse idea.
The problem is that Carson/Paulie is still the one character with any real warmth or humanity on a consistent basis. I find the other leads enjoyable to watch, but they generally don't have the kind of human feel the leads did on SG1. But lots of us have been wibbling over this since they first said Paul'd be leaving. I'm clinging onto the "nothing's forever in sci-fi" statement. The problem is that this puts even more pressure on Jewel, and it's not even her fault. If they don't make her character nice and approachable, she's screwed through no fault of her own.
Right now, my biggest concern is the prodigy angle. It doesn't work in sci-fi. No matter the skill of the actor, they just end up being irritating as hell. Welsey Crusher, anyone? *facepalm*
