We are sitting on dormant volcanoes here in Oregon, e.g. Mt. Hood and Rainer in WA state just to name of few. And I am certain you know the story of Mt. St. Helens. Eastern Oregon is littered with beds of lava which are very very high and dormant volcanoes also. If Hood or Rainer blew the result would be catastrophic. Not a minor problem, but MAJOR......for Portland and Seattle, but mainly Portland as we are closer to both. When we had Mt. St. Helens blow it covered us with ash.........of course they call the Pacific Rim, 'the ring of fire' and for good cause.
