Anyway, we were brushing the dog last night when my brother felt a lump on its backside. And then hair came out. Gah! A icky bloody type hole (icky picture here - the drippy stuff is hydrogen peroxide, not goo, fortunately) and there were more bumps, holes, whatever. This dog is like a Woolly Mammoth, so we have no idea when whatever happened.. happened. We weren't sure if it was puncture wounds (raccoon? coyote? neighbor's dog got nailed by something around the last holidays).

So, we peroxied said wound, then this morning spent the morning at the emergency vet clinic. Ah, could have had a camcorder for what I spent on pooch. But luckily, nothing horrid. They shaved a huge patch, debrided the wounds and sent him home with antibiotics. Here's what the 'after' shot of dog's backside looks like ..... [6/21/10 - well, not there anymore. For some unfathomable reason, Photobucket removed it. I mean, wow, it was just the hair shaved off thedog's backside and some scabs - I've seen worse skinned knees...)

And now, here's the dog, happy enough, about 15 minutes after we got home. He's fine. Yeah, it wasn't his charge card with nearly $200 added on to it!

And oh yeah, remember a post from last year where we'd found some weird horn thing growing out of his tail? Well, it's gone. Disappeared, fell off, whatever. I figure it sprouted little legs and went off to take over the world... ;)

Meanwhile, am very glad dog is okay. Phew.

Yup, a big Sheltie. 38 pounds (he's lost some weight! well, maybe the scales disagree - he still feels like huge sack of potatoes to me). ;)

The woohoo is for your dog being okay. Might I say that he is so very handsome and fluffy looking that I would just to love to give him a cuddle.

AWWWW!!! I hope he heals quickly! It's good you found that bite/abscess /spot, so much can be covered by a thick undercoat. He has such CUTE EARS!!! Scritch him for me :-)

When he sits down, he spreads out. I mean, he needs a warning side "wide load" ;) He's got a ton of fur and even after today, he wants to run outside and play in snow so I must drag him back in.

My brother says it looks good (he's EMS worker). ANd he's got antibiotics for a week. Don't know how long it will take for fur to fully grow back... and I was just gonna give him a bath this weekend!

My dog has those as well. Just keep it clean, flushed, and give him his meds. He should be fine.

Also, OMG!So CUTE!!!

Ah, but that is the face of a pup who is feeling much better and saying 'thanks mom!'. I've seen that look on my dog's face and the cats (after they've made the ride to the vet a living hell by not shutting up for even one minute the entire way!!). Still, that's a happy pooch with a good parent.

Fortunately he's too inflexible to lick it (no collar needed) and seems to be doing fine.

Yeah, he didn't whine once on the drive to emergency vet clinic (notice how this stuff ALWAYS happens on weekends??). Then again, maybe he's getting used to cars. He usually hates them.

Ditto with my dog. He has one on each side, and just can't turn that far back on himself.

He can reach his front paws, and that's about it. Like his grandma says, it's tough to get old!

I'm not going to look at that bloody shots LOL, but gorgeous dog! And if it helps you feel better (and your credit card), my pups ER visit a couple weeks ago cost a whopping $1300.

I think they know when you're taking them somewhere to get them help. You give off the 'I'm going to save you baby' energy. Yes, these things always happen on weekends and holidays or the middle of the night, just like kids I've noticed.

What a precious puppy!!! I have 3 dogs of my own and they've all, at one point in time or another, been doggie money pits. But we deal with the costs because we love them so much.

nasty photos, except for the one of his cute face. your dog looks pretty happy after his experience. glad he's okay.

ouch on the money. know how that can be with pets.

Poor thing. You and the dog!! At least you caught it before it became a bigger problem and more expensive also. They can be like family and we want to do our best for them. *sigh* for the money though. That happy face though can make up for some of it.

You dog is beauitful and I'm glad he's feeling better. I own a cat, but if I owned a dog, I'd def get pet insurance, based on the yearly check up bills alone.

The tail horn thing made me chuckle :-P

The only dog I ever wanted was such a collie (and I don't even have a camcorder). They do cost one money and worry but then they look at you ... :)

Well, eralier in the week he seemed touchy about us touching him, but we couldn't find any injury (too much fur and undercoat, I suspect!)

Heh, yeah that horn was bizarre... the thing with insurance is that it's costly. it's actually better to just sock away some money in your savings instead... and you gotta it when you get dog. pre-existing whatever. this guy's ten years old so....

He's happy now. Wound looks good, he got his rabies booster (which will make him tired for a day or so).
