Under the "wow, finally got something done" category, we got some of the damaged pine tree from Hurricane Sandy chopped up (see post at http://wraithfodder.livejournal.com/493940.html for the 'before' photos). Here is what part of yard looks like now!

The stack of logs in the middle is the remains of the pine tree trunk that was splayed out in the yard all winter long. At right is the smaller stack of the remains of the poor dogwood tree. It took me about 10-15 minutes, but I was able to dig out a branch (about 6 feet long), half of which was driven straight into the ground. I found several branches like that, most small but the big one took more time to remove. The tree, alas, remains, as done the big scattered pile of BIG pieces of chopped pine (seen more to the left, between the brown stack of dead pine needle branches and the stacked pile of logs).

But then again, the big logs now serve a purpose. Continue reading!

Turkeys!! Yup, two hens and six little ones, climbing all over the messy stack of fallen tree pieces. (any excuse not to have to clean it up). And if this works, here is a video of them as well. They showed up a few days ago under the bird feeder and seem to like the yard, despite the presence of a few cats whom I have yet to determine if they are feral or not. They seem well fed. The squirrels tend to give the turkeys wide berth as the turkeys are MUCH bigger (well, the two moms are).

The litlte ones are quite quick!

I was so glad to see them as two weeks ago, a fawn was born in our yard. An adorable little thing.  Two days after I saw it, I found HALF of the poor thing on the road in front of our driveway. Frigging coyotes! I can't think of anything else that would have done that. I buried the remains in the old garden under a huge heavy rock as I felt, well, if they didn't eat it all, they're not getting the rest. I haven't seen the mother deer since, but I hope they didn't get her too.

So seeing new little critters in the yard is good. I know it's a cruel circle of life out there. I just wish the coyotes wouldn't leave the bits and pieces for me to trip over...

So,I'm an ignorant Californian, but do Turkey's fly? The poults (is that the correct term?) sure seemed to do well.

Yup, turkeys can fly (at least the wild ones). About a decade ago, we had a family of turkeys in our yard. One day, I went oh no, where are the chicks (well, more like 'teenage' turkeys). I looked up and they were all high up in the tree! And one once flew in front of my car. Scared the heck out of me. Was this huge brown thing that nearly ended up in my windshield!

Ah...
male turkeys are called toms, female turkeys are called hens, baby turkeys are called poults and a group of turkeys is called a flock. so said a turkey site.

but Michigan.gov said "Most people are familiar with the term "flock of pigeons" and even "gaggle of geese," but did you know that a group of turkeys is called a "rafter"? "

How cute. My Uncle has them upstate where he lives. I have seen them cross the road out of season. In season you don't see them at all. I hate hunting people! My Uncle said the coyotes have really thinned out the deer up by him. He blames the insurance companies that were complaining about all the deer getting hit by cars so they introduced the coyotes in the area but over the last 4 years they have been killing everything including pets and you're not allowed to shoot them either!

They're so cute, the little turkeys. We have this very large flock (or rafter for a group of turkeys?) in the graveyard near by; the graveyard is very hilly with ponds and woods, quite pretty really and old). I've never seen any babies though, they must be hidden. I did not realize how cute they were until I saw your picture.

Well, they're tiny and move fast! I had no idea how cute they were either as it's been so long since I've seen one. Hope the 'rafter' (odd name!) will keep coming into yard.

They introduced coyotes???Wow, that's pretty stupid, cuz once they decimate the wildlife, they go after the easy to catch pets. Mankind shouldn't meddle with wildlife populations. Never turns out well.

Yeah, my Uncle said the insurance companies pushed for it. When I used to go up there before they brought in the coyotes I would always spot dear everyday. The last few years I've been there I didn't see any.

Doesn't turkey come from the deli? You mean they're real? Poor baby deer, coyotes are like foxes, pests (at least coyotes are native) who are cruel in their killing.

Ah, we never had problems with foxes (had a nice red one) but coyotes drove them out. Alas, coyotes eat baby deer and people's pets :(

The foxes are an introduced species and have started infiltrating suburban areas (okay suburban sprawl has infiltrated their areas). But they are feral and have started biting people. Die bastards!
