Okay, got the book today, and spent the whole day reading the book. In fact, just finished a few minutes ago, so now I can go back on the web with no fear of somebody blowing the ending for me with a casual "oh, so and so died" etc. type remark. Phew.

Anyway, shall discuss spoilers under the cut. Repeat, SPOILERS under the cut. You've been warned. In small type just in case.

I loved it!

Okay, the death toll was a bit appalling, but it was war. Didn't expect Hedwig to be the first casualty (eek!) but was quite happy to see Harry, Ron and Hermomine all survive the carnage. I was sad to see Lupin go. I rather liked him, and for a while there I thought, okay, Snape has blown off George's ear (and I had to go back and look it up as I always get 'em confused, George and now, oh wait, poor lamented Fred) so he's gotta be scum. I must admit I wanted redemption for Snape as I adore Alan Rickman's portrayal of him, and wow, got that redemption toward the end when it turned out Snape wasn't so bad after all.

I did figure out at one point that Harry was going to survive. It was when he was asked to be Teddy's godfather and I thought, oh, they can't kill Harry now. Who will be the kid's godparent and oh dear, hope Lupin doesn't bite the dust  (darn).

I did stop by the Borders store last night, just curious as to their HP party (which ran from 8pm till midnight and then I guess, what, 12:30 or 1:00 a.m. once all books were distributed?) and it was fun to watch little kids running around like Harry Potter. I only wish as a kid we'd had a book series like this.

Anyway, if anyone wants to discuss spoilers here, feel free to go ahead :) I'm sorta puckered out from the all-day reading marathon so am going to run off another chapter of the SGA story "Honor Bound" and read that before hitting the sack :)

My friend was so certian that Lupin wasn't going to die, Tonks was because it would fit the pattern. Its sad he died (was the baby born before he died?)

I have to ask...Did Fred Die. It sounds like he did from what you wrote but I want to check) and did Peter Pettigrew die?

Yeah, Fred's dead (oh, bad pun). Page 745 lists the death toll from the battle: Fred, Tonks, Lupin, colin Creevy and fifty others. Fred bites the dust on page 636. Sigh. I don't recall Peter Pettigrew anywhere...

Yes, the death toll was very high. I had a gut feeling that when Harry was made Godfather of Teddy, Lupin and Tonks weren't going to make it. That was another of the parallels in the story and it was so sad when it happened!!

Tonks dies? Ack. Poor kid.

Fred is my favorite character right now. Darn it. So far, out of my list of five or six favorite characters, the only one I haven't read confirmed dead is Draco Malfoy.

Its surprising that Peter wasn't mentioned. He'd be the only Maurader left alive now. I always figured he'd die doing something for Harry

Amaizingly, all the Malfoys - dad, mom and Draco - all survive.

Interesting. I don't mind Narcissa and Draco, but Lucius surprises me. Doubt he learned anything through all this though.

Yup, sort of a foreshadowing that what goes around, comes around, or something like that. I was sorry to see Lupin die as I really did like him quite a bit. For a while there I thought Ginny might get killed.

Guess you haven't read the book then? Somehow I suspect Lucius would be tossed into Azakaban for his part in the whole disaster.

No, I'm not much of a fan of the books themselves...mostly I don't like her style of writing so I loose interest easily. I like the universe and characters so I like learning what happened anyway.

Hmm. He deserves it. Lucius is probably the one character in the book sans Voldemort who had no chance or probably want of redemption.

Yup, don't see how Lucius can be redeemed, but he didn't die, well, at least not during the battle. Maybe in Azakaban. Wonder how they dealt with the Death Eaters and all the followers?? Ah, fanfic will probably pick up on that.

Fanfic is good for that:)

Peter dies ;) He starts to strangle Harry under the Malfoy Mansion (Dobby has just apparated off with Luna and co) and then Harry reminds him that he saved his life. Peter's silver hand hesitates 'cause Pettigrew was being merciful, and then strangles him to death as he dared to disobey Voldemort :P

I read things way too much.

Ah, thanks! I read it fast, so I woudln't get nailead by spoilers (and yup, today on the web, someone plunked 'em down in a review column - not the reviewer, but some dolt who went to the message board). I'll be rereading it to savor all the tidbits later this month :)

LOL! I know what you mean. My mum got me a copy on Saturday afternoon, which I finished in the evening. I refused to log on before then fearing some idiot would post spoilers everywhere. Its the principle of the thing! I only want SGA spoilers :P

Pettigrew does die, and it's ironic how he goes.

I loved this book too, so much better than the previous one. It actually took me two days to read, people are quicker than me. When I discussed the book with my sisters, one of them said something that cracked me up. It was a summary of the Harry's speech to Voldemort at the end of the book. Harry asks Voldy, "So, are you feeling lucky?"

I tore through that book pretty fast but got through without seeing any spoilers. I was thrilled with the ending though. I'm thinking I'll re-read the entire series, now that I know what details to look out for. Here's my question: I didn't really get the character turns in the Malfoys. It just felt like not enough time was spent on them going from bad to not-so-bad/kind of okay. Maybe I just read the book too fast and missed the details.

To me it sounds like the Malfoys were sorta cowards, sorry to say, and basically just wanted to save their own skins over anything.... like you, going to do some re-reading, at least on this book :)
