Yes, Stargate Atlantis fans will be hitting the liquor and chocolate ice cream tonight.

Multichannel reports that season 5 is the last season for Stargate Atlantis.

Meanwhile, we get a two-hour movie instead of 20 hours. I can't say I'm all that thrilled that Mallozzi and partner will pen the movie.
Sigh. This sucks. Feel free to rant in the comments section.

‘Stargate Atlantis’ Ends Sci Fi First Run After Season 5
2-Hour TV-Movie Greenlit For 2009 As Stargate Franchise Lives On In Features
By Kent Gibbons -- Multichannel News, 8/20/2008 5:59:00 PM
Space drama Stargate Atlantis will conclude its run on Sci Fi Channel after the current, fifth season ends next January -- but the network has greenlit a two-hour Atlantis movie to run after that and says the show will live on as a network franchise. After airing on Sci Fi sometime next year, the untitled Atlantis movie will be sold as a home-video title by producer MGM, Sci Fi told Multichannel News on Wednesday.
MGM this year released two financially successful straight-to-DVD movies made after progenitor series Stargate SG-1 ended a 10-year run of first-run cable episodes on Sci Fi. MGM and the show producers are scheduled to make more in DVDs in future. A movie franchise is also envisioned for Stargate Atlantis.

Date: 2008-08-21 06:58 am (UTC)as i understand it MGM and not SciFi pulled the plug. i imagine it was over some financial matter rather than ratings. The ratings have been solid and infact have been getting better.
Cancelled!
Date: 2008-08-21 07:11 am (UTC)You know, I kind of thought they were going to do this. Don't the actors have 6 year contracts? I'm sure TPTB don't want to negotiate new salaries. And they've been pushing Stargate Universe, which I'm sure will come with unknown and cheaper actors.
David Hewlett's site would be hacked right now.
I'm seeing Rainbow Sun Francks at DragonCon and he'll be the last Stargate main cast member I needed to see. In 2 months I will have seen David Hewlett, Richard Dean Anderson, and Rainbow. Now it makes me feel like that jinxed it.
BTW, it's weird that the photo they have for the article is of Teyla and Radek. The couldn't find a main cast photo? But the two of them look like I feel.

Date: 2008-08-21 08:11 am (UTC)SGA is the first show in a long time that has me watching every single episode, most of them over and over again.
Also, with the really good ratings it's been getting it seems to be a very strange decision.

Date: 2008-08-21 09:38 am (UTC)I thought it would go to at least 6 seasons but I guess MGM can see more dollars in DVD's and SGU..
I really, really hope Joe ends up doing something really neat and I will continue to follow his career although there will always be a special place in my heart for Shep.
Man, No more SGA - that is sooooo depressing!
Wasn't Joe signed into a 6yr contract? Where does he stand now its cancelled? or does that mean he is safe for the DVD?

Date: 2008-08-21 09:53 am (UTC)On the other hand, there have been slight indications of the show not being renewed for another season. Especially with all the talk of SGU, because there was a big 'there can be only one'-kind of deal going on, and it looks like it's going to be that way. >_>
Also, not happy with the fact that Mallozzi and buddy are the ones who'll be working on the eventual movie.

Date: 2008-08-21 10:56 am (UTC)*sigh* Sci Fi doesn't tend to get a long shelf life regardless of ratings. Its pricey to produce and no matter how good the ratings, they still can't compare to American Idol which is all TV execs really understand.

Crap. I'm not keen on a new series.

Date: 2008-08-21 11:11 pm (UTC)Why can't they just take a hiatus like Doctor Who will? They'll have the movie or two to last us a year, and then they can save up some cash for the next season.
Sci-Fi always has sucked, though. And that's a sci-fi show for you-- DW and SG1 aside, how often have they actually lasted for more than five years?
I've heard there's to be a supposed new spin-off of some kind. :/ I wonder how they'll wing that, if at all.
Damn, this just SUCKS. *flips off MGM & Sci-Fi*

Date: 2008-08-22 07:31 am (UTC)It got to the point where I was reading McShep fictions and browsing videos on my own time (over a dialup connection, people! If that ain't dedication, I don't know what is!) and Melissa said I was probably the only fan of the show that had never seen a single episode. My Christmas present was the season 1 box set, ordered off Amazon for me.
After a while she got this bright idea of mailing me her external hard drive with a bunch of episodes she downloaded. Yep, her little hard drive--whom we named Chuck, after none other than SGA's own Chucknician--made several trips back and forth from Texas (her) to Kentucky (me), ferrying wonderful sci-fi. It's only recently that she's started sending me SG-1 eps as well, although those are gonna take a lot more time to go through. Oh, and she gave me a couple of seasons of Farscape as well, though I've only watched a few eps since I'm kinda hung up on Jack O'Neill's thinly-disguised flirting with Daniel Jackson.
And now... *sniffle* Skiffy, you bastard!!!
