Multichannel reports that season 5 is the last season for Stargate Atlantis.

‘Stargate Atlantis’ Ends Sci Fi First Run After Season 5

2-Hour TV-Movie Greenlit For 2009 As Stargate Franchise Lives On In Features

By Kent Gibbons -- Multichannel News, 8/20/2008 5:59:00 PM

Space drama Stargate Atlantis will conclude its run on Sci Fi Channel after the current, fifth season ends next January -- but the network has greenlit a two-hour Atlantis movie to run after that and says the show will live on as a network franchise.

After airing on Sci Fi sometime next year, the untitled Atlantis movie will be sold as a home-video title by producer MGM, Sci Fi told Multichannel News on Wednesday.

MGM this year released two financially successful straight-to-DVD movies made after progenitor series Stargate SG-1 ended a 10-year run of first-run cable episodes on Sci Fi. MGM and the show producers are scheduled to make more in DVDs in future. A movie franchise is also envisioned for Stargate Atlantis.

Meanwhile, we get a two-hour movie instead of 20 hours. I can't say I'm all that thrilled that Mallozzi and partner will pen the movie.

Sigh. This sucks. Feel free to rant in the comments section.

After reading the pitch for SGU, I really have no interest in watching it. I live the characters and team dynamics from both Stargate shows and to just cancel the shows for the reasons they did or whatever reasons they did to possibly give this new SGU show their full attention really pisses me off. Everything on Friday night was revolved around SGA, now that BSG is near its end, looks like I will have to add my studies to that night.

Same here, I am canceling the network when the last episode of SGA and BSG air. I am not interesting in Sanctuary and SGU. I watched Eureka, GH and GHI but I will not pitch a fit if I miss those shows, Stargate was a different matter.

SciFi has a notorious record for shows that did not last long, the ones you mentioned and others that I saw only once and then were canceled. I was annoyed when the Dresden Files were canceled as well.

Gods, I really, really hate Skiffy.

I'm with you on that! I've hated them since the demise of Farscape for of all things a dirty cartoon! Tripping the Rift was it?

But...but....they just got Robert Picardo signed on! They were making progress! The show was making sense again! *flails*

Did anyone else notice that SGA was canceled on or around the same date as SG1?

Oh my gods, that is right. That cartoon show was mental.

I still have not forgiven them for canceling Farscape, then SG1, Dresden Files, The 4400 and now SGA. So pissed off right now.

I've probably been living under a rock, but this is a real shock to me. And I really don't see that SciFi is in all that great a position to be canceling a relatively well-performing, proven show. I don't think their development has been all that stellar in the last two or so years, and with the last season of BSG also at hand, this seems like a crap idea.

I suspect MGM did everything they could to keep it on the air. SGA is a cash cow for them. Blame SciFi.

That was for Season Three, actually. Season Four wasn't even halfway aired yet -- you don't nominate a season that hasn't completed airing. ;)

I have to say I saw this coming a long time ago. No kidding, I LOVE the first three seasons of SGA. But then it tanked -- I mourned for my dear show, let go of the new seasons and will watch my old ones over and over. I've made my peace, but I totally understand that many had it.

I have to just say, it's KARMA BABY for sacking Paul and Torri, using stunt casting and treating the show like a piece of crap. It was always the ugly stepsister of SG1 - or, stepbrother, given how male and blokey tptb are.

My only hope is that the movie will focus on the Atlantis family - Shep, Liz, Carson, Rodney, Teyla, Ronon, and recurring characters like Zelenka and Lorne. With minimal Keller, Carter or Woolsey. Because that would be just awesome.

I personally can't wait to see where the cast's careers take them after this. (Especially JF.)

I guess I will just have to wait until the technology really exists so I can leave this pathetic place and live out my own stargate experience. The movie better be as good as Continuum. Very disappointed indeed...

its been limping for a couple of years now IMO. the stories aren't that great, the arc is directionless and the character development is virtually non-existent. having said that i still enjoy it immensely and watch the show religiously.

as i understand it MGM and not SciFi pulled the plug. i imagine it was over some financial matter rather than ratings. The ratings have been solid and infact have been getting better.

Does it matter? It's not like they specified which season it was for -- it beat Battlestar Galactica and Doctor Who, which means there's some support there.

Cancelled!

Waaaah!

You know, I kind of thought they were going to do this. Don't the actors have 6 year contracts? I'm sure TPTB don't want to negotiate new salaries. And they've been pushing Stargate Universe, which I'm sure will come with unknown and cheaper actors.

David Hewlett's site would be hacked right now.

I'm seeing Rainbow Sun Francks at DragonCon and he'll be the last Stargate main cast member I needed to see. In 2 months I will have seen David Hewlett, Richard Dean Anderson, and Rainbow. Now it makes me feel like that jinxed it.

BTW, it's weird that the photo they have for the article is of Teyla and Radek. The couldn't find a main cast photo? But the two of them look like I feel.

I feel very, very upset at the moment :(

SGA is the first show in a long time that has me watching every single episode, most of them over and over again.

Also, with the really good ratings it's been getting it seems to be a very strange decision.

Not Happy :-(

I thought it would go to at least 6 seasons but I guess MGM can see more dollars in DVD's and SGU..

I really, really hope Joe ends up doing something really neat and I will continue to follow his career although there will always be a special place in my heart for Shep.

Man, No more SGA - that is sooooo depressing!

Wasn't Joe signed into a 6yr contract? Where does he stand now its cancelled? or does that mean he is safe for the DVD?

D: Oh no! I was hoping for at least another season.

On the other hand, there have been slight indications of the show not being renewed for another season. Especially with all the talk of SGU, because there was a big 'there can be only one'-kind of deal going on, and it looks like it's going to be that way. >_>

Also, not happy with the fact that Mallozzi and buddy are the ones who'll be working on the eventual movie.
